July 30, 2006Here's Sunday night Cowboys report from WFAA-TV's Dale Hansen. The entry "Video: Sunday night Cowboys report" has no entry tags. The team will hold an intra-squad scrimmage next Saturday. DT Thomas "Pepper" Johnson came from nowhere to have four sacks in last year's scrimmage. Someone will emerge from next Saturday's scrimmage. Two practices tomorrow. We'll be here for all of it. m I'm sure I'm reading way too much into this, but it sure looked like Terrell Owens had some bad body language going when the ball didn't go his way. Drew Bledsoe did not complete a pass to Owens all day and only threw one, which was a little off target and dropped. After seeing the kickers struggle with field goals last year, the fans sure weren't happy to see Mike Vanderjagt miss on his first try of training camp from 30 yards. His second try, from 35 yards, was good but was an ugly, low kick. He made his final two attempts. He may have been attempting to get away from Matt Mosley, but I saw owner Jerry Jones leap the fence behind the end zone. Not bad for a 63-year-old. During individual teaching sessions, rookie running back Demetris Summers experienced the good and the bad of blocking blitzing safeties. He slipped on one attempt as Williams came in with a bull rush and was flattened, but stoned Williams the next time. He could learn from Marion Barber, who stoned Abram Elam. The first camp skirmish went to tackle Marc Colombo and linebacker Kevin Burnett. After a Lousaka Polite run, the two exchanged small shoves before escalating into a tug-and-pull session that was broken up by teammates. Linebacker John Saldi faces long odds of making the roster, but the son of former Cowboys tight end, Jay, had a nice moment in the running game, taking on guard Cory Procter and still being able to tackle Demetris Summers for a small gain. Rookie Bobby Carpenter was working as an inside linebacker on the nickel defense. For those of you who think Al Singleton won't have the starting role for long, Parcells had nothing but kind words for the veteran. Singleton is the type of player who goes unnoticed until he's gone. Carpenter will have to work to get the job away from him. Tough day in the passing game when Drew Bledsoe was sacked (or as close to being sacked he can be in training camp) three times. We'll leave you now for some of Matt's witty comments. • Linebacker Kevin Burnett and offensive tackle Marc Colombo were involved in a skirmish during the team scrimmage portion of practice. Burnett tried to land a punch, but the 6-8, 320-pound Colombo didn't seem fazed. And just so you know, I've heard more than one coach describe Colombo as the toughest player on the team.
CB Aaron Glenn deserves honorable mention for diving to knock a pass away from Terry Glenn toward the end of practice.
He hasn't done it since 2003, but the Cowboys are going to give him a try.
According to sources, there were six cars parked outside the entrance to the River Ridge Athletic Fields at 8 this morning. If you're scoring at home, that's six hours before today's practice started. And speaking of practice, we're off and running. About to begin the stretching portion.
Training camp has been rocked with the news that actor Mel Gibson was arrested a few miles down the road for suspicion of drunk driving at 2:30 Friday morning. This site broke the news and the LA Times appears to have sent its entire newsroom to produce a story for this morning's edition. The LA County Sheriff's Department is investigating whether Gibson was given preferential treatment. The deputy's original handwritten report ended up in the hands of celebrity news website TMZ.com. The report said Gibson made anti-Jewish slurs. He also boasted that he "owned Malibu," which may or may not be true. Question: If you indeed own a community, are you allowed to drive 80 mph with a blood-alcohol level of 0.12 percent? Just asking. Now, back to more Cowboys coverage. Let's do some quick hits on what Bill Parcells said during his daily news conference:
"We wanted to give him a really good test and see if he was physically ready to do what what we needed him to do," said Parcells. • Marcus Spears underwent surgery on his right knee this morning. Parcells said it was a relatively simple surgery that included shaving some meniscus.
• Tight end Brett Pierce (right) is out for the year with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. I know it may not be a headliner, but Pierce was a solid special teams guy who had surprisingly good hands. Also one of the best guys on the team.. • Some interesting discussion of why a lot of guys seem to be going down with leg injuries. I'll link you to my pal Sam Farmer's story when he writes it for the LA Times in a day or so.. • If you're wondering why Pat McQuistan worked at first-string LT yesterday, you're not alone. Parcells said he just wanted Rob Petitti, Jason Fabini and Marc Colombo to work mainly at right tackle. • Planning to write my column on Petitti on Tuesday if anyone's interested.
•.Parcells said his discussion with Greg Ellis (left) during practice Saturday had nothing to do with Ellis' status on the team. "I have a pretty good relationship with Greg," Parcells said. "Both of us separate the business from the stuff that happens on the field." Parcells mentioned three of his former players who were able to make similar transitions. Much, much more to come. Things to look out for in today's practice:
• Flozell Adams (left) will practice for the first time since suffering a season-ending ACL injury against the Giants last season. Adams did some light jogging yesterday, but seemed to be dragging his right knee as he jogged. • Bill Parcells said Terence Newman will handle punt returns. Parcells said he told Newman he wanted him to take the duties more seriously than last year. He expects that he will. • Today is the first day that Parcells and the coaches will look at the kicking game. Parcells would like Mike Vanderjagt to kick off and handle field goal responsibilities. • The defense was ahead of the offense in the first practice, and Parcells talked to his coaches about it last night. Terrell Owens said the offense was a little behind yesterday. The backup quarterbacks, Tony Romo and Drew Henson, were a little inconsistent in their throws. The running backs didn't have a great burst through the holes. We'll see how the offense picks up today.
Coming in 10 minutes...Will also pass out the Shoutdown of the Day Award. Parcells talked Petitti, Crayton, Newman and Vanderjagt today. Also mixed in some Fabini talk. See you in a minute. The entry "The Bill Parcells News Conference Report..." has no entry tags. This just in from Todd Archer... Brett Pierce’s season is over after just two training camp practices. Pierce, a third-year tight end, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee late in Saturday’s practice and will undergo season-ending surgery. It’s the third time Pierce has torn his ACL and second time in the past eight months (Nov. 20, 2005 vs. Detroit). He originally suffered the injury while at Stanford. With the Cowboys expected to use more two-tight end formations, Pierce was in a battle with Sean Ryan and Tony Curtis for one of the remaining backup spots. His ability on special teams was a strength and he could serve as an emergency long snapper. He caught two passes for 15 yards and had eight special teams stops in 2005. At the June mini-camp, Pierce was not wearing a brace on his knee and said it felt stronger than it did before the injury. He was not wearing a brace Saturday The entry "This just in: Pierce's season over" has no entry tags. While we wait for camp to get cranking, check out some of our Pro Football Hall of Fame coverage. Troy Aikman and Rayfield Wright will be inducted into the Hall on Saturday. Matt Mosley reveals some surprises in a terrific story on Rayfield Wright's roots in Griffin, Ga. Jean-Jacques Taylor rates the chances of other Cowboys to join Wright and Aikman in the Hall. Barry Horn has an interesting piece on Aikman's greatest game. Today is 12th anniversary of Randy White, Tony Dorsett HOF induction. And you may want to decorate your desktop with this. The Cowboys' only practice today will be from 2-4 p.m. (Pacific time). The Bill Parcells news conference will begin at its usual time, 11:30 a.m. (PT) What would you guys ask Parcells this morning? We're going to keep a close eye on this offensive line situation. If Flozell Adams goes a week without practicing, then we'll have something to talk about. I don't think it will come to that. Anyone remember all the time Larry Allen spent on the exercise bike in 2003? Adams might be on pace for that type of camp. I'm going to pay particular attention to the rookie during practice today. Some high-ranking members of the club are very high on safety Pat Watkins, who may be the tallest safety in NFL history. Anyone recall a 6-5 safety? This guy covers a lot of ground, but his legs look like twigs. The entry "Sunday morning announcements" has no entry tags. Here's what the Philadelphia Inquirer's Ashley Fox, a friend of the blog, had to say on T.O.'s first day of training camp: Check back at 12:30 p.m. Pacific time for a breakdown of Bill's news conference.
