August 8, 2006Here's a cool report on the hyperbaric chamber, the device T.O. apparently will use to help heal his sore left hammy. His cost 20K. Where else do you get this stuff? The entry "Video: Step inside The Chamber" has no entry tags. Here's the Parcells sitdown with the media from Monday. Tech gremlins delayed this. The entry "Video: Better late than never" has no entry tags. • Cornerback Terence Newman said afterward he felt fine, but he did not do much on the practice field Tuesday. Aaron Glenn and Jacques Reeves split most of Newman's duties. • Jamaica Rector had the catch of the day, one-handing a Tony Romo throw in the end zone and tapping his feet down before going out of bounds. Rector had a nice comeback day after appearing to hit a wall late last week. • Terrell Owens didn't practice, but he ran some routes at half speed or less after the workout while working with Sam Hurd and quarterback Matt Baker. It was the first time Owens has done some light jogging since straining his hamstring. • Marco Rivera is in his 11th season and is generally pretty calm on the practice field, but something defensive end Jay Ratliff did Tuesday must have upset him. Rivera and Ratliff exchanged haymakers during team drills for a spell before being separated by teammates. • At one point cornerback Jacques Reeves was beat on three straight plays. Terrance Copper and Jamaica Rector beat him on out routes and Skyler Green got him on a curl. After the Rector catch, an exasperated Mike Zimmer lit into Reeves. • Rookie cornerback Quincy Butler had the defensive play of the day, intercepting a Drew Henson pass in red-zone drills that would have been returned for a touchdown. After the interception Parcells sent the third-team offense on a sprint to the far fence. • Matt Baker’s first snap in team drills with the Cowboys ended with Lenny Williams intercepting a slant pass intended for Miles Austin. • Chuck Fairbanks, a Parcells friend from way back, spent time with safety Roy Williams after practice to work on Williams’ backpedal. Having friends like Fairbanks and former Green Bay general manager Ron Wolf on hand gives the Cowboys an extra set of eyes on players. • Rookie defensive end Jason Hatcher had a quality practice. He had a sack of Romo not too long after standing up guard Cory Procter at the line of scrimmage and stopping Julius Jones. • The Cowboys worked out receiver Markee White from Texas State but chose not to sign him. • Unofficially, Cowboys quarterbacks Drew Bledsoe, Tony Romo, Drew Henson and Matt Baker were a combined 35-of-64 in Tuesday's practice. • Sam Hurd ran with the first team for portions of Tuesday's practice instead of Patrick Crayton, but Crayton had a sharp workout, catching seven passes in team and seven-on-seven drills. The entry "Tuesday practice observations" has no entry tags. Only about 900 to go until the end of training camp. By the way, our second caption contest is heating up. You have until midnight to participate. The winner will be announced tomorrow morning. Talk soon. m The entry "Join us in celebrating our 300th entry!" has no entry tags.
Yes, I realize some of you can't stomach any more T.O. news, but just bear with me for a moment. Today more than ever, Parcells made it clear that he would not participate in the controversy that he feels like we're drumming up regarding Owens and his Magic Oxygen Machine. And judging by my in-box, many of you agree with him. Let me remind you, though, that Owens (above, doing pushups Monday) will continue to be the biggest story of this season. I would challenge you to find any Cowboys-related blog/forum in which this guy isn't the main topic. He is, in my mind, one of the three or four biggest celebrities in all of sports, and everything he does will continue to be scrutinized. Now, that doesn't mean I'm going to stop talking about the progress of Jay Ratliff or Bobby Carpenter. It just means you'll have to live with some of this stuff. Oh, and Parcells just spent the first couple of minutes of practice talking to Owens. He gave him a pat on the back, and then Owens made a beeline for the stationary bike. m

These commands usually follow statements like, "I think there's a chance Tony Romo will start against Seattle this weekend." Parcells said something along those lines today, and a group of story-starved reporters pounced. He's already said that Romo will receive a lot more playing time this preseason than in the past, but this is different. In the first preseason game, Parcells is thinking about letting his non-starting quarterback work with the first team. Without sounding too snarky (right!), I'm not sure Drew Bledsoe has done anything in this camp to deserve the night off. Your offensive line is shaky at best right now and your starting wide receivers have both missed time with injuries. Sounds like a great time to insert Romo. Oh, and Romo just called me from the locker room. I informed him of what Parcells had said, and here's how he responded: "This doesn't change anything from my perspective. I just want to be able to compete." Asked what this opportunity could mean to him, Romo said, "It's a chance to go against the defense that went to the Super Bowl last year." I also asked him whether he viewed this as an open quarterback competition between himself and Bledsoe. "I don't know quite how to answer that," he said. "You always come into camp with that mindset. That's how you have to be." Stay tuned for more.
The entry "More breaking QB news: Tony speaks" has no entry tags. Bill Parcells regretted saying it immediately, but he indicated today that backup quarterback Tony Romo had a "50-50" shot at starting in Saturday's preseason game in Seattle. Parcells quickly tried to downplay his announcement after fielding several questions, but it appears he's serious about his intention to see more of Romo heading into the season. Parcells continued to swat away questions about Owens' left hamstring injury, saying he would give T.O. the "benefit of the doubt." He said, "the media was waiting for something controversial to happen" and wouldn't be a part of it. Much, much more to come on this and other issues.... Someone on the Cowboys medical staff told me that one of the bones in linebacker Rocky Boiman's right thumb was actually poking through the gloves he was wearing. I hear that collective OUCH! Boiman made the mistake of blocking a punt off the most powerful right leg in pro football: Mat McBriar's. The daily Parcells news briefing begins in less than 45 minutes. Have to head that way now. See you back here about 12:30 p.m. Pacific time. Anything you want me to ask today? The entry "Boiman injury update (don't read during lunch)" has no entry tags.
Moments after Channel 8 anchor and alleged 5-handicap Joe "Space City" Trahan wrapped up his sitdown with Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten, he went in for an awkward man (side) hug. From my vantage point, Witten used a double-move to avoid Trahan's waiting arms. Meanwhile, NBC 5's Newy Scruggs walked around camp passing out "Have you seen our Overnights?" T-shirts. The entry "What you didn't see in the Witten-Trahan interview..." has no entry tags. Here's WFAA-TV's Monday report. More T.O. stuff and Jason Witten talking about how this season could be special. The entry "Video: T.O., Jason Witten, more" has no entry tags. In this exciting new feature, I'll link you to several articles that I'm reading every morning. As a great man named John Banks once said, "They call it the web for a reason!" I'm sorry. That's an inside joke that will make about five people back at the mothership laugh. But anyway, here's a story from The Los Angeles Times on how the Internet is changing the playing field in several areas. Back with more stories in a few minutes. Oh, and you have to register for LA Times site...Sorry. m The entry "What I'm reading this morning..." has no entry tags.
On the weekend, you might recall me talking about Bill Parcells "sprinting" (thank to reader Brian C. for the creative touch) to congratulate Drew Henson, who had suddenly discovered how to hit moving targets. On Monday, though, the budding relationship hit a snag. After a couple of errant throws, Parcells shouted at Henson before ending practice. Some of you have labeled me a Henson apologist, but it's important to note that I'm also a Romo apologist. Today, we're going to break away from all the T.O. chaos and let you know some bottom-line details: Who's making this team and who's not. Parcells would have us believe that this is a difficult decision, but in reality, he already knows enough to cut to 53 right now. If he did, he might end up regretting a decision or two, but I'm just saying that it's not as difficult decision as he lets on. Now, four years ago, when he didn't really know his personnel, it was pretty difficult. Much, much more to come. My colleague, Todd Archer, just sneaked up from behind and scared me. Almost caused me to throw my low-cholesterol crunchy French toast in the air. Question: Are they still "low-cholesterol" when you unload a bottle of Knott's Berry Farm syrup all over them? Just wondering. m The entry "The stormy relationship that is Parcells-Henson..." has no entry tags. As you probably know, most women dream of the day their husbands will wish them happy anniversary on a Cowboys blog. Now, I have to get back to addressing this left tackle situation. love, m In case you misssed it, our own Gerry Fraley had this to say in the return of his Just Venting Column today: It is hard to tell the difference between Terrell Owens pedaling an exercise bike and Terrell Owens on the practice field. That said, the Owens no-practice situation should make the Cowboys nervous. Owens is at an advanced age for a wide receiver at 32, has banked $15 million in signing bonuses in the last two years and will pick up another $5 million this season even if he moons owner Jerry Jones. Actresses show up in Owens' entourage. Networks line up to hear his words of deep wisdom. With all of that, how can a man be expected to practice? Maybe Owens does have a hamstring problem. Or maybe he is just not that interested in running routes in August. If the latter is true, there could be trouble ahead with coach Bill Parcells. Owens should follow the lead of a past lightning rod receiver with the Cowboys. Michael Irvin had myriad failings, but dedication to craft was not among them. Irvin practiced hard, and the team followed. Owens is setting a different example. Nothing like starting off the day with a video of the famous Cowboys mascot. It's guaranteed that our own Matt Mosley will love this. |
