Belichick and Parcells together again!

Bill Parcells and his former defensive coordinator, Bill Belichick, have apparently put aside their differences and become pals again. Parcells said today that he's been using Belichick as a "sounding board" and has made changes to his practice approach based on those conversations.

In case you've forgotten, these two had a major falling out in 2000, when Parcells handed the Jets' head coaching job to his understudy. Belichick bolted for New England and said less-than-flattering things about Parcells in a book.

Here are more highlights from today's Parcells news conference:

• Parcells continued to praise the work of rookie left tackle Pat McQuistan, who may end up starting if Flozell Adams can't go in Jacksonville. Adams will not play against the Vikings on Thursday. Parcells wants to see how McQuistan performs against Vikings defensive end Erasmus James.

The Cowboys thought about playing McQuistan at guard before training camp. They actually focused on his brother, Paul, in the draft because he had more experience. Paul is now starting at guard for the Raiders.

"We didn't really know the ability he had," Parcells said of Pat.

Asked to compare McQuistan to Petitti at this time last year, Parcells said that Petitti had a better understanding of the game but McQuistan had more athletic ability.

Petitti will probably begin the season as the swing tackle, meaning he'll back up Adams and the starter at right tackle.

• Parcells said center Andre Gurode has taken on more of a leadership role. The departure of Gurode's best friend, Torrin Tucker, might have been the best thing that could have happened to him.

• Parcells said he's thinking about the possibility of keeping five offensive tackles. Veteran Jason Fabini may be the odd man out if he doesn't keep that many.

• Mike Vanderjagt has kicked in the past two practices, and Parcells wants to have him to handle at least one kickoff against the Vikings.

Asked how he did on kickoffs in practice, Parcells joked, "He got a couple to midfield."

• Parcells said there's a chance you'll see third-string quarterback Matt Baker on Thursday. The Cowboys may end up placing Baker on the practice squad and begin the season with two quarterbacks.

• With the rise of Jamaica Rector and return of Patrick Crayton, Parcells said adding another wide receiver is no longer a top priority.

• Parcells said there were four or five roster spots still up for grabs heading into Thursday's game.

• Parcells called wide receiver Terry Glenn "one of the best guys in football." He said there aren't 10 other receivers in the game who could have run the route that Glenn ran on his touchdown catch Saturday.

Have to run back to the mothership to turn in expenses. Some of the most creative writing I've done in years.

My column will be posted sometime before midnight tonight. If you want something more specific, please contact my editor.
