September 27, 2006Terrell Owens' longtime personal trainer James "Buddy" Primm said Owens underwent two traumatic events Monday involving his 7-year-old son and fiancée. But after talking with Owens and his inner circle, he believes that suicide wasn't an issue. "He probably took the pain medication and fell off to sleep," said Primm. "Then when he gets up, of course he's going to be weird." Click here for the story. The entry "'A perfect storm' for T.O., says trainer" has no entry tags. The T.O. fiasco is like a flashback for some longtime Mavericks officials/observers/fans. Anybody remember Roy Tarpley? He was T.O. before T.O. was even at UT-Chattanooga. The Mavericks sweated out every off-the-field problem imaginable with this guy, some of which never reached the light of day. With players like Tarpley, Owens, Leon Smith, Dennis Rodman and others, it's never a problem with what they do between the lines. But life when they are off the clock is often off the wall. For those of you tired of reading about T.O., here's a little something that just came across my Valley Ranch desk: Kahuku High School in Kahuku, Hawaii, is tied with four other high schools for having the most players (5) in the NFL right now. My adopted high school, Lake Highlands, was once high on the list, but we may be down to three players at this point. Marcus Coleman is serving a four-game suspension, Matt Stover is still winning games in Baltimore and Phil Dawson is the best player on the Browns' roster. If I'm missing anyone, former LH quarterback Dr. Ryan Smith will set me straight within the next few minutes. OK, I'm headed over to T.O.'s condo now to see if I can borrow some JuicePlus. Terrell Owens said he "should" be available for practice tomorrow. In a failed effort to restore some sense of normalcy at Valley Ranch, he went outside and caught passes from Drew Bledsoe and Tony Romo. I talked to Romo, who was playing it pretty close to the vest. He said Owens looked fine. One of practice squad players, tight end Jerome Collins, asked me why this was such a big deal. I explained that it's not every day that a police report with details of a Terrell Owens' attempted suicide is released. And yes, this is the only place in the nation you'll find a Jerome Collins quote today. In the past 10 minutes, I've heard from one of the bigwig editors at ESPN.com and the anchor of a highly successful mid-afternoon program on the network. They recommend the following column on Owens by Dan Le Batard. Besides some of the Super Bowl news conferences, today's Terrell Owens gathering was the craziest one I've seen. I would estimate that 100 reporters and imposters were there to witness T.O.'s spin. Some national organizations flew reporters in as soon as word broke this morning. Ed Werder can't catch a break. If this team is going to call a news conference, they should at least wait until he's made the turn at Cowboys Golf Club. For the most part, reporters have played nice, although I was rude enough to inform a colleague that he was in my seat earlier today. By the time I came to my senses and began acting like a normal human, it was too late. And if you're not completely sick of reading me, I'll be discussing today's events on Channel 52 at 6:30 p.m. You know, it's the station that airs the Oprah rerun. m My former employees spent much of the afternoon plugging our little blog. Bob and Dan of the Bad Radio Show even invited me on for a segment. I continue to enjoy my unpaid role as Mickey Spagnola's backup quarterback on the station. When Mickey's in poor health or his bluetooth earpiece misfires, I try to make myself available. The entry "Thanks to The Ticket radio station" has no entry tags.
If you've followed the T.O. saga over the past few years, you've seen this woman's name appear in print many times. Kim Etheredge (right) is T.O.'s publicist and probably his most trusted ally. She was prominently mentioned in his latest book, and she's the person to call when you're looking to get shot down on an interview request. I've actually had several conversations with Etheredge over the past few months, and she seems like a nice person. It's hard to believe it's been more than six hours since we first heard a WFAA-TV (Ch. 8) report that Terrell Owens attempted to harm himself with prescription medicine last night. As you've already heard by now, Owens apologized to the team for being a "distraction" and then flatly denied trying to take his own life. He said that his publicist, Kim Etheredge, was concerned about his health because he was non-responsive, which led to her calling 911. He said she noticed an empty bottle of hydrocodone before making the call. Owens said he put the rest of the pills "in a drawer" in his condo. The entry "T.O.'s spin patrol takes over" has no entry tags.
Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens flatly denied Wednesday that he tried to commit suicide, explaining that he was groggy from taking a couple of painkillers. “There was no suicide attempt,” Owens said during a packed news conference at the Cowboys’ Valley Ranch headquarters. Click here to watch the video. (Photo courtesy WFAA-TV 8) Quarterback Drew Bledsoe is speaking right now, and then we're supposed to hear from Terrell Owens at 2:30 p.m. Parcells said he planned to "get filled in pretty good" on the T.O. situation after leaving the news conference. I have a hard time believing that the head coach didn't know that his star wide receiver spent the night in the hospital. Parcells became increasingly frustrated during the news conference. "Let me find out what the heck's going on," he said. The entry "Headed back to the locker room" has no entry tags. Talked to my friends at WIP in Philadelphia a few hours ago, and they said the city's stopped down for T.O. situation. Of course their callers seem to be more concerned whether he'll be ready for the Eagles-Cowboys game on Oct. 8. Back with more in a moment.
Bill Parcells (photo courtesy WFAA-TV) just took part in the most well-attended news conference since he became the head coach four years ago. With a news helicopter circling over Valley Ranch, Parcells told a packed audience he didn't find out about Terrell Owens' situation until "mid-morning." Every question but one was about Owens, and Parcells was there for less than 10 minutes. "When I find out what the hell is going on, you'll know," Parcells said. "Until then, I won't be interrogated for no reason." Parcells said he hadn't spoken to Owens and that he'd only visited with owner Jerry Jones for a few minutes. He said his star wide receiver seemed to be doing "fine" yesterday. "Last night we became aware of the fact that Terrell Owens was admitted to the hospital. Since that time we have been in the process of trying to determine the facts regarding his medical condition. Our concerns right now are for his health and well being. This is a medical issue that involves an individual’s personal health. When we have additional information on Terrell’s condition as it relates to his playing status, we will share it with you." Matt Mosley reports that it's a media circus out there in Irving. T.O. is now scheduled to make a statement at 2:30 p.m. Please stay tuned. Here's what supposed to be going on at Valley Ranch this afternoon ... 1:30 p.m.: Bill Parcells news conference. We'll keep you posted. Calvin Watkins reports that T.O. just left his condo, presumably on his way to Valley Ranch. Todd Archer just called in to say that former Cowboy Drew Henson has signed with the Vikings. Henson had worked out the with Dolphins on Tuesday. Terrell Owens will address the media at 2:15 p.m. today at Valley Ranch, not at his condo. Stay tuned. Bob Sturm of Bad Radio fame just praised our Calvin Watkins for the excellent work he's doing at T.O.'s condo. Or he may have been making fun of us. Sounds like Owens is assembling an all-star cast outside his condo. My mentor and friend, Norm Hitzges, was kind enough to provide the public with the block that T.O. lives on earlier this morning. Oh, and Freedo, you need to clean out your voicemail. So far, I've heard that Michael Irvin, Deion Sanders and Drew Rosenhaus have all gathered at T.O.'s place. You might recall that Sanders has a little experience with this type of situation. The entry " The Ticket giving us props" has no entry tags. You've probably read where the Dallas police have issued a new report regarding last night's events. This one apparently has some of the details blacked out. And the police now said they released the report "prematurely." What you're about to hear is some huge spin control. T.O. will say that this was all a huge misunderstanding. What's hard to figure out is how his publicist, Kim Etheredge, went from trying to save her client's life to saying he just had a bad mix of pain medication and supplements. Will we ever know the complete truth? I doubt it, but this will give Owens a good jumping off point for his next book. The entry "Story getting weirder by the minute" has no entry tags. Calvin Watkins reports that Deion Sanders and his wife have arrived at T.O.'s condo. "We will get the truth from the man himself," said Sanders. "He will tell the truth." From Todd Archer ... The Cowboys announced that T.O. will be making a statement at his condo within 45 minutes. Details to come. Todd Archer reports from Valley Ranch that tight end Jason Witten is back at practice today. Witten missed Tuesday's workout. Calvin Watkins reports that T.O.'s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has arrived at Owens' condo. Rosenhaus would not comment. When someone asked if T.O. was OK, an unidentified man nodded his head "yes" and closed the door. From the time the T.O. story broke this morning, we've been receiving calls from news outlets across the nation. The NFL puts out something called the Black Book, which lists all our cellphones. If you like being on ESPN occasionally, this is a good thing. On a day like today, it's a complete nuisance. Heard one producer put the phone down and shout, "This guy doesn't have anything new!" Just heard from my father-in-law, who asked, "What can you tell us, Matt?" We're hearing that T.O. will be making a public statement outside his condo in about 45 minutes. Our Calvin Watkins will set the scene and I'm sure our friends at WFAA-TV (Ch. 8) will provide the pictures. Stay with us, folks. And remember, if you want to respond to our coverage, simply click on the "comments" button after our entries on the blog. The entry " Little background on a breaking story" has no entry tags.
Calvin Watkins reports that T.O. just returned to his condo in Deep Ellum. Owens arrived in a black Cadillac Escalade driven by an unidentified woman. There were two other people in the back seat. (Photo courtesy of WFAA-TV.) Just when we thought Terrell Owens couldn't surprise us, this happens. As a nation, we'll accept brash and often childish behavior from our star athletes, but we're not really equipped for hearing that some of them are human. According the police report, Owens tried to harm himself by taking several pain pills. Several of us have suggested in the past that this man needs to be on some form of medication for his erratic behavior, but that was halfway in jest. This man could be more troubled than any of us could've imagined. I'm about to head out to Valley Ranch and see what's going on out there. m The entry "Stay with us throughout the day" has no entry tags.
