The cuts dig deep

Rob Petitti started 16 games last year at right tackle as a rookie, playing every offensive snap, but the Cowboys waived Petitti Saturday, leaving Jason Fabini as the backup offensive tackle.

The other surprise move was the cutting of linebacker Rocky Boiman, who received a $1 million signing bonus. Boiman was impressive in training camp practices and came back quicky from a compound fracture to his right thumb.

Here are the other cuts:
QB Matt Baker
OL D'Anthony Batiste
WR Damarius Bilbo
DE Stephen Bowen
WR Terrance Copper
TE Tony Curtis
LB Junior Glymph
WR Skyler Green
RB Keylon Kincade
S Willie Pile
OT Dennis Roland
C Matt Tarullo
NT Montavious Stanley.

S Marcus Coleman will be placed on the suspended list by the NFL and miss the first four games.

Petitti? This has got to be a prearranged deal between Fabini and Parcells to protect his salary. No way did Fabini out play Petitti. No way.

If Petitti makes it through waivers, which I doubt. watch Parcells cut Fabini NEXT WEEK and resign Petitti...so that Fabini gets his salary forthe entire year.

Yet again, Parcells puts himself and "HIS" players above this franchise. WHEN, WHEN is Jerry going to stop this?! I mean give me a break, you keep a washed up, very average tackle in Fabini and get rid of a young, maturing, developing tackle in Petitti. Let's see, a freaking junior high coach could do better than this. Stupid, just a completely stupid move.

I'm really surprised to see Petitti and Copper go, although there is a glut of talet at both positions.

I guess this means the 'Boys are keeping two kickers, at least for the time being.

Unbelievable that they would cut Petite....

Vanderjagt's inability in kickoffs and making field goals more than 25yrds led to Cowboys keeping two kickers and probably the last roster spot went to Suisham rather than Petiti.. thats a pity.. hope we don't rue the day..

The Parcells curse continues. The player who receives the most praise for his offseason almost always seems to get cut. This year that was Petitti. Another reminder not to pay any attention to who is the king of the offseason. It still comes down to talent and Petitti was clearing lacking in that category.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Not Montavious!!! Our family fell in love with him on draft day. We have kept up with his progress. He is a household name to my seven year old. Every time we hear his name, my son, my daughter yell, "Montavious!" Come on, we even nicknamed our dog Montavious! Please say it ain't so. Is there any chance he will be kept on the practice squad?

The one that I am most surprised by is Rocky Boiman. I thought he would provide excellent depth at LB and be a good special teams player. I am confused by that cut. But the rest seem pretty obvious. When we drafted Petitti last year I said he was TERRIBLE before we ever saw him play a down in the pros. Every scouting report I read about him last year spoke about how poor his footwork was. Parcells blew that pick...badly!

But I do want to say that i think Parcells has handled the team extremely well so far this year.

Nothing like wasting mid-round draft picks and big free-agent contracts for players who can't play while passing up draft choices who could've helped the offense, incl WR and O-line.

This indicates to me the faith that Parcells puts into both McQuistan and Proctor, affording him to dress 8 or even possibly 7 OL on gamedays. McQuistan behind Flo on the left, Fabini behind Columbo on the right(or possibly swing), and Proctor as his swing guard.

Junior Glymph and Terrence Copper??!?! You got to be kidding me!! Either we have some superior talent ahead of them or we just got more stupid!

Posted by DJM @ 3:58 PM Sat, Sep 02, 2006

I don't understand the Petitti cut? BP has done nothing but praise the guy this preseason, from everything I've seen this preseason he was clearly ahead of Fabini. Is this strictly about the cap hit the cowboys would have taken if they cut Fabini?

I agree with all the cuts except Rocky Boiman, he was having a really good camp, and even came back with a compound fracture. He showed the heart to play. More heart than our high paid "high percentage" kicker, that was smiling on the sidelines after his second OT miss. Shocking isn't it???

I'm surprised to see Pettiti on the list. Couldn't we trade him for another player? Seems like a tackle with 16 starts should be worth something.

Posted by Snakesdad @ 4:32 PM Sat, Sep 02, 2006

I hope Skylar Green is picked back up and added to the practice squad. He had a lot of success returning kicks at LSU. Much of the reason why he didn't show much here had nothing to do with a lack of talent, it was a lack of blocking.

Posted by Frank @ 4:54 PM Sat, Sep 02, 2006

Now this is funny! How quickly people forget what having two unexperienced tackles will do to a team. Colombo will more than likely be the starting right tackle. If Flo went down, you want Petitti to be the tackle again??? Fabini is far more experienced. This is a case of Parcells loving McQuistan, and needing a veteran to swing at both spots.
The Petitti cut is not confusing at all.

What I was confused with was the Boiman cut. I guess this is a symbol of having so much depth at LB? Greg Ellis, Singleton, Carpenter, Ware, Burnett, James, Ayodele, and Fowler are very solid and capable LB's, and Hoyte as been showing up almost every special teams play. I'm confused there wasn't room for one more, in Boiman. With Ellis and Singleton thought of as maybe one year players before, maybe this is a sign that James will be resigned, Ellis will stay, and Singleton might be resigned to finish his career here.

And to those who think having two kickers caused the Cowboys to make a tough roster decision, not really. The Cowboys will only keep two QB's, that takes care of the lost roster spot, especially with the cut of Skyler.

I was bursting inside to spout off, then I read Frank's entry, and couldn't have said it better. Frank, are you sure you're not Parcells in disguise?

Posted by Thomas @ 10:40 PM Sat, Sep 02, 2006

Pettiti was servicable, McQuistan is the talent. Fabini was slow to show anything because of the torn pectoral muscle. Bill knows what Fabini is from previous product knowledge. Fabini has experience playing both tackle positions. Early on we heard that Pettiti wasn't bringing his off-season work to the field. I really don't see what is so surprising. I think if you get off owens for 5 minutes, you might have seen this coming.
