October 26, 2006 My Baptist roots prevent me from taking part in this type of thing, but I thought some of you might be interested in what the oddsmakers are saying about Tony Romo. Total Passing Yards by Tony Romo 0-150 +250 151-190 +225 191-230 +200 231-270 +180 271 or More +190
What will happen first for Tony Romo? Throw a TD Pass -110 Throw an Interception -130
Tony Romo and Bill Parcells were on the same page today. Romo showed up for his news conference in a Jimi Hendrix T-shirt. And for those of you who don't know, Parcells is a huge Hendrix fan. Romo was having to temper his enthusiasm. He chose his words carefully and sometimes edited himself in mid-sentence. After mentioning some of the old quarterbacks he and Parcells had talked about in the past, Romo cut himself off abruptly. "I don't know where I was going with that," he said with a sheepish grin. He finally got a little fired up when the cameramen raced off to listen to T.O. "We're going to be ready to go Sunday, and we're going to try and turn this thing around...The way to right the ship is to win." Across the locker room, Terrell Owens was telling reporters that he planned to bake Romo some cookies this week. This is "chemistry in the making," Owens said of his relationship with Romo. The entry " T.O. and Tony: Match made in Heaven?" has no entry tags. Can't believe someone would steal my identity in order to win an election. The dead giveaway was misspelling my last name, though. That said, I still plan to throw my support behind the imposter. Rock the Vote! m Sounding like a veteran politician, quarterback Tony Romo addressed reporters for the first time since being named the full-time starter. He wore a smirk on his face as he stood in front of at least 40 reporters and cameramen. Romo said there was "more of a sense of urgency," this week, but he swatted away questions about how far he'd come and how much pressure he was feeling. Drew Bledsoe walked by at one point and removed Romo's Atlanta Braves cap to reveal a fresh and somewhat uneven haircut. "Looks like a blind man in the military cut your hair," said Bledsoe, who made the best of what could've been an awkward moment. Click here for Big Bill's sitdown with the media. Click here for Jerry Jones' thoughts on the quarterback situation. This is my moderator's favorite game because he gets to read and approve about 700 of your comments. The deadline for turning in your prediction for Sunday night's game is noon tomorrow. Special thanks to Calvin Watkins for his fine work during the noon hour. Bill talks in five minutes. Headed that way. m The entry "Time to play Guess the Score" has no entry tags. Jerry Jones has not mentioned the words Super and Bowl together, but he clearly had expectations heading into this season. Now that Tony Romo is the quarterback, however, while not throwing in the towel on the season, the Cowboys owner and general manager said the expectations should be ratcheted down. "I have to be a realist," Jones said. "If we are making this adjusmtent right now, I hadn’t thought or hoped that we’d be sitting here after the sixth game making these adjustments. But I’m not in any way thinking with the amount of games that we have left with the team we have with the plusses that Tony could bring to us im not in any way dismissing the possibilities this year." Since Troy Aikman retired Jones said he has not wanted to move up to the top of the draft to select a quarterback because of the salary cap consequences if the player fails. But Jones said he will look at changing his philosophy now that the Cowboys are on their ninth different starter since Aikman left.
If any Cowboys fans want to get away from this year's team for a second and have the day off, Troy Aikman and his UCLA Bruins are taking on Washington State on ESPN Classic in a game from 1988. The entry "Hey, Troy's back at quarterback" has no entry tags. Before I head to lunch, I like Carolina this weekend. Yeah, it's Thursday, but I had to turn my picks in to the bossman. Haven't been to Charlotte in a long time, if anybody knows a good place to eat on Saturday night let me and Matt Mosley know. Here's some more Jerry Jones on Tony Romo's ability to quarterback the Cowboys: "I think he's a top athlete. I like his approach to competing. He's got a natural leadership quality about him. He does as you all know, he gets that ball out of there...he sees it. When that mind sees it, it's gone. And you can't coach that. He's pocket sensitive. He's got a good feel of where it's coming from, the pressure."
Giants receiver Plaxico Burress told the Newark Star-Ledger that Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens is a coward. Owens slipped on a pass thrown by Drew Bledsoe. He later changed his shoes. It's the second time this season that Owens has slipped while fielding a pass. " ... he was being a coward," Burress said. "He was sliding into home plate like it was the World Series because he didn't want to take a shot." Owner/general manger Jerry Jones spoke to the media for about 25 minutes at the start of practice on Thursday. Here's some of the highlights: On the QB situation: "There’s no issue as far as I’m concerned relative to is there any debate on my part relative to Tony starting. I knew when we started the season that if we went away from Drew Bledsoe that meant we were facing some challenges that I didn’t want to face during the season." On disappointment of making the change at QB: "I’m not disappointed that Tony Romo as a young quarterback that we’re playing him. I’m not disappointed. I’m disappointed at the reason we’re having to make this change not that we’re dealing with those reasons." Defensive tackle Jason Hatcher missed practice for the second straight day with a sprained ankle. Hatcher said on Wednesday he expected to practice. I doubt at this point Hatcher will play, with only one day of practice. Hatcher is a key defensive lineman on the nickel package.
Before we shift our total focus to the Panthers, allow us a go-back on the Giants. Specifically Tiki Barber, who blasts those "idiots" -- including ex-Cowboy Michael Irvin -- who criticized his decision to retire after the season. SI's Peter King, who predicted that Tony Romo would supplant Drew Bledsoe after watching an afternoon training camp session, has made his picks for this weekend. In case you don't feel like scrolling to the bottom of Peter's picks, he has the Cowboys winning, 20-16, in Carolina. OK, I'm off to watch practice. m One of my former colleagues and a friend of this blog wrote a recent story about the Cowboys' two biggest personalities. Here's a sneak peek at some of Juliet Macur's prose: "The Dallas Cowboys’ locker room once was as austere as a monastery, but Terrell Owens has broken that silence. I do miss the monks, though. The entry " T.O. knows how to cope with a hangover" has no entry tags. Our media columnist, Barry Horn, asked some of the top network TV analysts their thoughts on the Cowboys' quarterback switch: Troy Aikman: "Some people compare [Tony] Romo to Brett Favre. I see Romo playing with the same type of energy as Brett, but, for now, I'd end the comparisons there. You have to rein in his recklessness. But then, it was Favre's recklessness that made him a success." Phil Simms: "Coach Parcells knows that if you are trying to shake up a team, quarterback is the one position that can give it a different personality. He is hoping for a shot of energy from Romo that will change the style of performance of the whole team. He knows this one move can produce a different team. The way a quarterback talks in the huddle, the way he walks through the locker room is vital in the development of a team." John Madden: "I know what Bill Parcells is going through. I had Daryle Lamonica as my quarterback and I switched to Kenny Stabler after the start of the season. Like Bill, I was giving up experience and arm strength for mobility. "Daryle had no mobility and was hanging on to the ball too long. Snake could move the ball. It wasn't something I did on the spur of the moment. It is a tough decision giving up the known for the unknown. It worked out well for us, but it wasn't something I was sure of." The entry "Aikman, Simms and Madden sound off on Romo" has no entry tags. |
