What does Vinatieri think of Parcells?

5:27 PM Thu, Nov 16, 2006 |
  E-mail   News tips

This quote is provided by my friend and colleague David "Pinot" Moore, who is reporting from this blog's Indianapolis bureau.

Asked about his relationship with Bill Parcells, the Colts' kicker said, "I wouldn’t say we’re tight, but I’ll definitely say hello to him before the game or after the game. I had the pleasure of working with him for one season, my rookie year, and I think I learned a lot from him. He’s a great coach. It will be great to see him."

As I said yesterday, Parcells didn't want to talk about why the Cowboys went after Vanderjagt instead of Vinatieri.

"House rules," he said.

Cowboys stats

5:26 PM Thu, Nov 16, 2006 |
Calvin Watkins   E-mail   News tips

Here is the defensive stats from the coaching film of the Cowboys:
Tackle leaders: Bradie James, 67, Anthony Henry, 57, Akin Ayodele, 53.
Quarterback pressures: DeMarcus Ware, 4, Jay Ratliff, 4, Marcus Spears 3.
Passes defensed: Anthony Henry, 15, Roy Williams 10, Bradie James 7.

Some of these stats may be different from other sources.
For instance, Roy Williams didn't record a single-tackle in last week's game at Arizona. But the coaching film found one for him.

Romo's finger

5:20 PM Thu, Nov 16, 2006 |
Calvin Watkins   E-mail   News tips

Tony Romo's right middle finger is swollen. He said the finger is fine and that he doesn't expect any problems throwing the ball.
Not sure when he hurt the finger, but it might have occurred during the Arizona game. Most of his passes were a little high and Romo said that was because of the coverage he saw and he didn't want to throw an interception.
Maybe it was the finger.
After the game, he had it taped.

Dual spot at outside linebacker

5:17 PM Thu, Nov 16, 2006 |
Calvin Watkins   E-mail   News tips

Nobody can replace Greg Ellis at outside linebacker.
Saying that, it seems Bobby Carpenter and Al Singleton will play at outside linebacker in the 3-4 defensive scheme.
Junior Glymph will come in as well with Kevin Burnett playing the nickel.
Burnett, a nice fellow, has been a little tense when asked about his status on the 3-4 scheme.
"No comment," he said.
Burnett said after Sunday's win in Arizona, he expects to play more, and not just on the nickel.
But coach Bill Parcells has Burnett mainly on the nickel. It could change, but I doubt it.

No Mike Vanderjagt

5:13 PM Thu, Nov 16, 2006 |
Calvin Watkins   E-mail   News tips

For most of the season, Mike Vanderjagt is around the locker room talking to reporters about a number of subjects.
This week no where to be found.
Oh, we saw Vandy walking toward Bill Parcells office on Wednesday with a navy blue sweatsuit, somebody asked was it a Indianapolis Colts model, and he shook his head no.
But with the Colts coming to town this week, Vandy's former team, it would be nice to get his thoughts.
But if he doesn't want to talk, that's his right. But hey, does this mean Vanderjagt is a little tight? Is Vandy thinking about the game a little too much? Is he nervous?
We'll find out on Sunday.

Terry Glenn should play

5:12 PM Thu, Nov 16, 2006 |
Calvin Watkins   E-mail   News tips

Bill Parcells said receiver Terry Glenn is doing fine in practice. Glenn has a kneecap injury that forced him out of Sunday's game at Arizona.
Glenn wanted to play in Arizona, but Parcells kept him home.
A few days off for Glenn has helped the knee recover some and he should be a factor against the Colts.

The Mosley Afternoon Report

3:54 PM Thu, Nov 16, 2006 |
  E-mail   News tips

But first, a quick program announcement: I will appear on the wildly successful Southwest Kia Sports Talk show on channel 52 at 6:30 p.m. In an effort to boost ratings, the show has asked me to actually show up on time tonight, so look for me at about 6:38. Anyone who calls in and mentions the blog will receive a free "Save Matt Mosley's Blog" T-shirt.

With that out of the way, let's get to the Report. Bill Parcells took a stroll down memory lane today, referring to an old Giants quarterback turned broadcaster. He professed his love for Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney and talked about his team's struggles at free safety.

Canty kickin' it old school

2:59 PM Thu, Nov 16, 2006 |
  E-mail   News tips

Cowboys defensive end Chris Canty was singing the classic song "Mr. Telephone Man" from New Edition's ground-breaking 1984 album, New Edition, this afternoon in the locker room.

Since Canty was 2 at the time, I asked him when he became a New Edition fan. Turns out one of his brothers is 12 years older than him. He then launched into "Cool it Now," which was the first song of that album.

Canty and I then talked about his one-on-one matchup with Colts offensive tackle Tarik Glenn. Canty said the thing he needs to improve on the most is his confidence. He's coming off a solid effort against the Cardinals, but he's been frustrated by his own play in some games.

Canty has gone back and watched what former Steelers defensive end Kimo von Oelhoffen did against Glenn in last year's AFC Divisional Playoff game. He said that Oelhoffen, who now plays for the Jets, and the Patriots' Richard Seymour provide excellent examples of how to slow down Peyton Manning.

Much, much more to come.

Wesley Snipes look-alike in locker room

1:14 PM Thu, Nov 16, 2006 |
Calvin Watkins   E-mail   News tips

One of the reporters was getting hazed for dressing in all black and for looking like actor Wesley Snipes in the Cowboys locker room on Wednesday.
Jason Ferguson, Akin Ayodele and Bradie James all got on our reporter friend. There was a game of dominos going on in the back with a couple of players as well.
Yes, the Cowboys are pretty loose heading into their game with the Colts on Sunday.

Emmitt did it his way

1:09 PM Thu, Nov 16, 2006 |
  E-mail   News tips

I had planned on watching ABC's Dancing With the Stars last night, but something came up at the last minute.

Little bit shocked that Cowboys legends Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman would take part in this sort of thing.

Maybe someone can post some audio of what Staubach had to say.

I can't wait to see next season's lineup. Since the cast of Gimme a Break has already been utilized, maybe it's time to bring in Punky Brewster.

Wonder what this woman's up to.

Practice report

  E-mail   News tips

First of all, let me apologize for our technical problems this morning. If you had problems logging onto the site, there's a reason for that and it's one that I'm not capable of explaining.

Anyway, everyone practiced for the Cowboys, including this year's sixth-round draft pick Montavious Stanley, who was claimed off waivers from Jacksonville.

Stay with us throughout the afternoon. Bill at 1:30 and players after that.

Hoosier hospitality

David Moore   E-mail   News tips

Got into a cab today and asked the driver to take me to the Colts complex. After a few seconds, he politely asked if I was a player.
Let's forget for a moment that I'm not in good enough shape to be a PR director, much less a player. After I stopped laughing, I told him the Colts wouldn't be 9-0 if I was a player.
And yes, I gave him a big tip.
Come to think of it, maybe that's what he was after all along.
