What did Parcells say?

4:14 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006 |
  E-mail   News tips

"At the end of the day, the penalties did us in. We had our chance to win the game right there, we just had to execute one play and we didn't do it. It's a heartbreaker."

On the blocked field goal: "It was a bad mistake."

On the momentum turn after T.O. dropped the TD: "The momentum turning point was that last play of the game. We came back, had a chance to win with a reasonable field goal, and it went to the wire."

On all the penalties: "We're just terrible at that area."

Parcells wouldn't criticize Roy Williams and T.O. for their costly mistakes, but we'll take care of that for him.

And about that two-point conversion attempt, Parcells said he "always" goes by the chart...Hmmm...I seem to recall him going against the chart two years ago. I'll try to look that up for you.

The chart is for losers. If the 2pt try is successful, the coach talks about their gut feeling or their film study or their preparation during the week. When it's missed, they blame the chart. Check out the play-by-play of the Monday night game at Seattle a couple of years ago. He went w/ the chart midway through the 2ndQ and against the chart on their very next score. ....if I recall.

Posted by Chris Metcalf @ 4:31 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

Parcells says he doesn't "coach" players on penalties but when do you start benching guys for making the same dumb mistakes? Fasano seems to be either getting penalized, missing blocks or dropping passes every game this season. I'm NOT a fan of this two TE formation anyway but Fasano seems to be a liability when on the field.

Posted by Allan @ 4:34 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

...and by the way, is there a more control-freak, arrogant, self-centered, take charge coach in ANY sport than Parcells? Doesn't he spend the bulk of EVERY press conference telling us how little we know and how much he knows? How does this coach who claims to practice everything and coach everything down to the most minute detail get away with saying he goes by the chart? He's letting the chart dictate his football genius?!? No. He's lying. He messed up. Again. And he's lying. Again. He doesn't use the chart. He only blames it when he's wrong.

Posted by Robert @ 4:34 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

So was that Colombo or Flozell that ignored Troy Vincent?????????

Whoever did that should be cut immediately to make a statement.

Another missed block. Just COMPLETELY ignored the guy in front of him.

Posted by John @ 4:36 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

I am a Parcells fan but not TO. His antics in the end zone, dropping the TD pass and his yelling match with Parcells are a hindrance to the team. Would Jones allow a employee in his business to sleep through meetings?

Posted by Frank Colonna @ 4:37 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

Bruce DeHaven is not doing a good job! To allow a blocked kick at that point in the game after a time out is ridiculous. The return teams are horrible, and the punt coverage is getting worse every week. He should be under some serious fire. Memo to Parcells: Skyler Green is not an NFL player and should not be on this team.

Posted by ernest t bass @ 4:38 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

Speaking of Owens, Norm Hitzges on The Ticket's postgame show brought up the possibility of the Cowboys being penalized 30 yards rather than 15 yards when Owens 1) assumed the fetal position and 2) used the football as a prop, each a 15-yard penalty. Does anyone know if these penalties are stackable and should this jackass have actually cost the team 30 yards?

Posted by Robert @ 4:39 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

BP put his team in a position they did not have to be and given they are a stupid team ....

Take the XP in the first half. Not a secret. Even Troy was calling it.

Conservative play calling on offense. End around in FG range to Glenn followed up by a Marion run up the middle on 2nd and 18?

Blitzes to nowhere. So true this team never gets to the QB on blitzes.

No enuff running of Marion or Julius in the second half -- Redskins where very tired and giving up big chunks.

Horrible Special Teams play today. Don't know if anyone noticed the great field position Skins where given all day.

Wow. Another game forfeited to stupidity.

Posted by housefan @ 4:51 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

The only encouraging thing about this team is we may have found our next great quarterback.
Now we need our next great head coach to follow JJ and Landry.
This is an undisciplined football team.
It will take 4 years to undo the damage Parcells has done.
We have a defense that gives up big plays, an offensive line that is inconsistent, and special teams is far from special.

Posted by Jeff from Portland @ 4:54 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

"Does anyone know if these penalties are stackable and should this jackass have actually cost the team 30 yards?"

lets just say it should of......that way we can blame TO twice as much.......beacuse obviously that penalty is the reason we lost the game.........nevermind the fact that the redskins got the ball at the 35 moved it 3 yards in three plays and punted.

Posted by Dennis Bauer @ 5:00 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

How can a BP coached team be so undisciplined? We are one of the most penalized teams in the league and continue to give up big plays at the worst times. We have playoff caliber talent....what is going on?

Posted by Robert @ 5:08 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

TO? The closest thing to an explanation I have heard about how TO lost this game was Jimmy Johson saying, to paraphrase.... The Cowboys are an undisciplined team that makes too many mistakes and TO is a distraction which only adds to the lack of discipline.....

Stupid team. Stupid players. Sloppy coaching.

This team should have cream pies tossed at them everywhere they go this week. Including THE Coach.

What a stupid team. I am still in shock of how stupid this team is.

Posted by rs691919 @ 5:10 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

Blah, blah, blah...it was TO's fault. Blah, blah, blah...TO is a "traitor". Funny, TO isn't the one who played Bledsoe for six games. TO wasn't the one who built this team. I think it was Parcells.

Posted by Bill Ballou @ 5:18 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

Okay, okay, it's my fault that I feel this way. I had detached my emotions from this team since the mid ninties. This season I allowed myself to get excited about this team. Dag gone it.

Posted by Joe @ 5:19 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

Here is something to put on your chart, DONT LOOK AT THE CHART UNTIL THE FOURTH QUARTER!! And how about just leaving T.O. home, is he really worth the dropped passes (4th down against the giants and sure touchdown today). Everyone knows our kicker can't get it to the 20 so T.O. is going to pull a T.O. in the end zone and give up more field position, and then yell at Bill on the sidelines. Leave someone home and bring a kicker that can put it in the end zone!

Posted by Bill @ 5:24 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

Hey can R. Williams be moved to a linebacker position? He's a great hitter but terrible in deep coverage. Remember last year's loss at home to the Redskins. 2 blown coverages within what a 4-minute time frame. Not to mention the blown coverages in the past few weeks, as a matter of fact the entire secondary is dreadful.

Posted by Bill @ 5:30 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

I totally agree with Joe. Can somebody take the chart away from Coach Parcells at the beginning of the game and give it back about midway through the fourth quarter? I don't agree with the part about leaving TO at home however do I wish TO would stop all the theatrics and focus all his great talent on catching every pass that hits him in the arms and/or hands. Anybody who drops passes should not be doing end zone celebrations. Catch the ball, give it to the ref and go back to the huddle or to the sideline whichever is appropriate.

Posted by Jacob Haber @ 5:31 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

You wanted T.O...Now learn to live with him for the next seven games.

Posted by Bill @ 5:38 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

What's up with the TO bashers? This guy isn't any different than any other vocal player. Did you see Aaron Glenn blowing up on the sideline today during the game? He was yelling at the coaches about something.

Posted by John @ 5:41 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

Parcells and Gibbs, they should rename the two games per year the OVER THE HILL BOWL. Two guys who dont know when to call it quits.

Look on the bright side, I think we have finally found a QB.

Posted by Bill @ 5:44 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

How about that Tony Romo!!!!!!! What a player thus far

Posted by Bill @ 5:46 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

Oh yeah John, finally found a quarterback

Posted by Roco @ 5:56 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

What's really the deal with Dallas fans and T.O. The Cowboys had a 153 yards in PENALTIES today, with the 15 yard post touchdown incident of no consequence. To the unbiased, T.O. is NOT the problem with this team. How about some team discipline on false starts and pass interference penalties? Or is that T.O.'s fault...

Posted by Buddy @ 6:03 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

Can you imagine if the Giants or Patriots had a game like this under Parcells? He'd be foaming at the mouth.
It's obvious Tuna just doesn't care anymore.

Posted by ginger @ 6:06 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

T.O. gave that celebration penalty away like the Cowboys were leading by 3 touchdowns with 2 minutes left.

Why does he always have the stupid grin on his face when he drops the ball on a big play?

Posted by John @ 6:13 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

I think if Romo started the year at QB, he may have been the difference against J-Ville and Philly.

Special teams did the damage today. Randle El had good punt returns and of course the blocked kick. The Boys have too many talented individuals to be 4-4.

Posted by John @ 6:18 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

TO is a good reciever and he hasnt caused any problems, he is not the problem with the team. Sorry to say but older coaches just lose it in their old age. Makes me wish we had held on to Sean Payton after seeing the way he turned New Orleans around. Gibbs and Parcells, take some GERITOL and move to the retirement home in Florida.

Posted by Darryl @ 6:21 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

I was ticked just like all of you guys, yelling stupid players, dumb TO, crappy secondary. After I settled down it finally dawned on me that the whole problem with this team is coaching. Have we returned any punts or kickoffs for a touchdown since Joe Avezzano left? Bruce DeHaven needs to take a hike! Our special teams have been terrible since he's been here. The play calling was brutal too! Penalties are a symptom of bad coaching.

I'd also like to question if the investment in the 3-4 defense was really worth it? Seriously, is our defense playing any better than it did in the 4-3? What did we do about a free safety? That's all coaching and I think Parcells is just too full of his ego, thinking he's so cool and smart that he can coach someone into something.

Posted by Bill @ 6:22 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

Stop making TO your scapegoat. T.O. didn't get any penalties today. T.O. didn't miss the block on the winning field goal attempt. TO didn't have the ball go through his hands in the end zone (Henry). T.O. doesn't cover receivers on pass plays, oh wait nobody on this team does that.

Posted by John @ 6:29 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

They need to win 6 of the last 8. Can they do it?

Posted by Bill @ 6:30 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

i mean *Newman*

Posted by Tommy @ 6:48 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

TO is a distraction. Jimmy Johnson I think pegged it right, he is too much of a distraction to this team. Discipline is totally missing. Coaching is poor. This team is much better than its record. Being from Louisiana I've seen up close what Sean Payton has done in New Orleans, and the Cowboys let him get away and kept Parcells. Jerry sure screwed up on that one. If Payton would have been coach, TO would have been out the door and Vanderjagt too. Big waste of money on both.

Posted by P @ 7:13 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

T.O. isn't THE problem on this Cowboys team, but he's definitely not helping. If anyone else had dropped that sure TD, T.O. would have been up in their face yelling like a moron. Bill Parcells, the secondary, Vanderjagt, and too many other mistake-prone players to name are THE problem with this team.

Posted by Tyler @ 7:15 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

Romo was awesome, the play calling in the second half was terrible. How do we only score 7 points in the half against the 26th-ranked defense? We always change our gameplan based on what the scoreboard says. If we are 3 points ahead we play prevent offense. We leave bad teams close and always give them a chance to win. This is Parcells. The same BS since he got here every game practically. How pathetic. I say put 40 pts on the board and then rest a little. Don't play down to the competition.

Posted by John @ 7:24 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

I just dont agree with the TO bashers. He is a good wide receiver. He is dangerous after he catches the ball and he plays through pain. Most guys wouldnt have played with a broken hand and in that Super Bowl 6-7 weeks after a broken leg. He hasnt said anything negative about other players and he even admitted that he didnt have a great game today, saying he owes one game to the team.

Posted by Mike Stevens @ 7:50 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

T.O. is just taking reps away from guys like Crayton and Hurd....two young guys that have great hands.

Why are we even talking about any of the offense when the Defense that has been the beneficiary of so much in FA and the Draft unable to get a shutout once in awhile?

Somebody mentioned Sean Payton.....Heck, I'd fire Zimmer and get someone in here that can turn these defensive investments into Razors

Posted by Roco @ 7:51 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

T.O. is NOT a distraction. He is however the best offensive weapon they have. You non-athletes confuse passion with complaining. Michael Irvin did it all the time. It is so obvious this team is simply undisciplined, and that falls squarely on the head coach. How many defensive pass interference penalties can one team get? How many offensive false starts? Come on fans, it's time to start facing the real issues.

Posted by Joe @ 8:11 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

Alot of us T.O. bashers are long time cowboy fans and we have a hard time getting over the star incident. Be that as it may, penalties come from lack of discipline. T.O is cancer slowly eating away at the discipline of the cowboys. Great teams have great chemistry. T.O. kills chemistry, did it at S.F. and Phily. I do agree with alot of you our special teams suck. And glad to see someone else thinks Roy Williams would be a great linebacker.

Posted by Brian @ 9:47 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

It's easy to say that players like Hurd and Crayton have great hands, but we haven't seen them thrown to enough yet. T.O. is still the best weapon on that team, and on average, the best wide receiver in the game over the past several years. He opens up the passing game like no one else in the business and, once he has the ball, he runs like a bat out of hell.

The Cowboys need to be a disciplined team by the end of this week. Once they do that, they will start winning with Number 9 at the helm.

I expect to see a New England-Dallas Super Bowl this season or the next. The Team of the 90s versus the Team of the 00’s.

Posted by Wayne @ 11:32 PM Sun, Nov 05, 2006

Suggestions for improvement: Stop using 2 TE offense (Fasano) & put Barber & Jones in backfield together.
De-activate Fasano & Skyler Green & activate someone to at least handle kickoffs or replace Vanderjagt altogether.
Move Roy Williams-he is a liability in coverage & doesn't wrap up when he attempts to tackle (prefering the hard hits that he is so well known for) There are other problems such as play-calling, but these will be a good start.

Posted by Dan @ 8:45 AM Mon, Nov 06, 2006

Roco,

You are correct...TO is CANCER. I have no horse in this race (I am from NOrth Dakota) but it is clear that Dallas has a lot of talent, and should be one of the top five teams in the league. Lack of discipline is the culprit...TO is the epitame of lack of discipline. So much talent...so much insecurity. It is truly a shame.

Posted by Greg @ 9:54 AM Mon, Nov 06, 2006

"T.O is cancer slowly eating away at the discipline of the cowboys"--so I guess he was the chemistry problem of the 04 & 05 cowboys as well right??? The problem is Tuna...quit listening to the New jersey conman. I guess TO is also responsible for the ridiculous treatment of Mooch by the Niners & the HORRIBLE personnel decisions theyve made. & you know what...I guess TO is the reason Garcia fell flat on his face as a starter in Cleveland & Detroit... GEEZ get a clue.

Posted by Jimmy @ 10:05 AM Mon, Nov 06, 2006

This team has absolutly NO discipline! For that Parcells is to blame. T.O. is a major distraction and things wont get any better until ALL of the team is held accountable for their jobs. I think they should be payed based on their performance, if they win pay them if they lose cut their salaries. 153 yards in penalties!!! Jerry it's time to hire a GOOD coach!!!

Posted by Bernie @ 10:46 AM Mon, Nov 06, 2006

Chris Metcalf's comments above are right on. The reality is that Parcells' boneheaded, against-the-book decision with 12:55 left IN THE SECOND QUARTER cost the Cowboys the game. Everybody can talk about too many penalties, and T.O.'s dropped pass, but the simple reality is this: if Parcells kicks the extra point (by the way, nice touch in your post-game press conference, coach, "blaming" the chart for your decision, not taking personal responsibility for it -- vintage "Parcellspeak" right there), the Cowboys would have been 20-19 victors after Novak's FIRST missed attempt.

I'm up here in the midwest, but somebody please tell me that this decision is being questioned locally, because watching the national folks (Costas, Collinworth, Berman, etc), they're all too afraid to raise this point and hold Parcells accountable for one of the silliest, unnecessary over-coaching moves in recent memory. The other reality is that all of us who have posted in this blog all have the same number of playoff wins as Parcells has had in the last five years of his coaching.

Posted by Tony - New York @ 11:05 AM Mon, Nov 06, 2006

Perspective: How much greater a player and leader was Darren Woodson than we gave him credit for?
How much poorer is this team on the field than we care to admit to ourselves as Cowboy fans? How many seasons of unproductive coaching will it take in Dallas to tarnish Bill's HOF career?
Conclusion: These guys don't know how to win, and there's no one on this team that can show them.

Posted by Dan @ 11:42 AM Mon, Nov 06, 2006

They did not lose the game because of Parcell choosing to go for 2. At 5 minutes to go Gibbs decides to punt from Dal 39 yard with 4th and 6. If Dal is up by 1, maybe Gibbs goes for it. Who knows what might have happened. Maybe they don't make it and then Dal can run the clock out. Maybe they make it and score and Dal has to come back.

There are a lot of "What if" in this game, but bottom line is Dal lost a game they shouldn't have. If you can't make up 1 lost point in 3 quarters you don't deserve to win.

What cost Dallas the game was like everyone says, TO's drop, stupid penalties and missed opportunities.

Now Dal has to win at least 6 games to get into the playoffs.

Posted by David Smith @ 12:31 PM Mon, Nov 06, 2006

This is a team sport. When the team get's beat the whole team is to blame, not just one person.TO is not superman, he can't catch ever pass. Why blame him for the loss. If you want to blame someone, blame the owner,he was the one who put this team on the field.

Posted by Caradoc @ 12:35 PM Mon, Nov 06, 2006

"Does anyone know if these penalties are stackable and should this jackass have actually cost the team 30 yards?"

No. The second one would have been half the distance to the goal.

Posted by Jim @ 12:45 PM Mon, Nov 06, 2006

TO doesn't have a great yards after catch career average-it would be better though if he didn't run out of bounds so much.

Posted by Don @ 2:16 PM Mon, Nov 06, 2006

It's cancer, all right! TO should be inactivated for the remainder of the season!
