This will be a rapid-fire session. Bill spent some time this afternoon talking about how Sean Payton basically raided his organization. Parcells said the only thing that bothered him was when the Saints signed safety Keith Davis to a $3.1 million offer sheet in April. The Cowboys ended up matching the offer four days later, but Parcells thought that Payton should've given him a heads up. "He just should have called me up and said, 'Are you going to match the offer?'" He got scolded for that. I said you're just costing everybody money here. I said just call me up and ask me if I'm going to match and then you'll know. I wouldn't do that to you." Parcells said that Payton quickly apologized. "He called me because he knew...to his credit, he's a man. He called up. I appreciate that. We have a good relationship, very good." Then I asked Parcells why he refused to let Tony Sparano out of his contract even when Payton was offering him the offensive coordinator position in New Orleans. He said a change in the league rules gave him the ability to say no. And then he provided a history lesson. It was all a facade is what it was. It was a way to get people out. "...The owners passed a rule, say look, there's two kinds of coaches, there's the head coach and there's assistant coaches. "If you're under contract for the next year, you can grant permission to another team if you choose to, but you're not obligated to give the assistant coach permission to talk to anyone unless it's a head coaching job." Hey, in some cases, maybe you want somebody to call you." Now let's hit several topics: Parcells said the sack that right tackle Marc Colombo finally gave up was Tony Romo's fault. He also pointed out that Colombo hasn't had a holding penalty this year...Parcells said that Flozell Adams has been playing better in recent weeks. He said Adams' "poor technique" and "lack of concentration" had held him back earlier in the season...Parcells said practice squad quarterback Matt Baker has made solid progress. "I don't know what it's going to turn out to do. He's in the same place Romo was several years ago."...Parcells said he's working on a "contingency plan" at quarterback. He's not comfortable only having two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster...Parcells said Anthony Fasano was the most mature rookie on the squad...Parcells said the loss of Hollis Thomas will be tough for the Saints but that his backup, Rodney Leisle, is a pretty effective player. Leisle (6-3, 315) is in his third year in the league...Asked about Jason Witten, Parcells said, "Today's not a good day to talk about him." Then he abruptly ended the news conference...I'm off to another holiday event. |

$3.1 million for Keith Davis? Talk about a shot in the dark.

Hey, what's the deal with Witten. Is there something going on with him? Why are you leaving us in the dark?

-"Asked about Jason Witten, Parcells said, "Today's not a good day to talk about him."
This peaks my interest quite a bit. Whitten and Jones are the two of the Cowboys I would like to see more info on. I'm thinking signing/drafting a back up QB is very important at this point. I think Bledsoe has made it clear he won't be on the Cowboys bench next season.

Bill pretty much expressed the same sentiment many of us had. Sean raided the cookie jar. I know he was desperate, and some of that is to be expected, but you get the feeling he would have taken the entire coaching staff, and half the players. Anyway, I was rather surprised that Bill let all that out. Normally his lips are tighter than size 3 panty hose on issues regarding other people.

You can leave us hanging like that! What did Witten do to find the doghouse?

Contingency plan? Please tell me it's Hostetler. I loved using him in Tecmo Bowl.

As much as a I agree with the sentiment, isn't calling to ask if they are going to match and 'you're just costing everyone money' blatant collusion?

Did I miss somthing? Why is he upset with Witten?

What's the deal with the "no comment" reference on Witten?

Don't leave us hanging - what's going on with Jason Witten? You trying to win the cliffhanger award?

What's up with the "today's not a good day to talk about him" comment re: Witten? Big Jason do something to get in the doghouse?

Keith Davis would make a good SS. He is playing out of position and Peyton knows it.
3.1 for 4 years is cheap for a starter. Maybe they can trade him for a draft pick this year.
Between Elam and Roy Williams they are deep at SS. Elam can play and was a top top Florida talent who got caught in some bad stuff early on.
Not only that SS is an easy position to fill in comparison to FS.
Cowboys needs a FS unless Watkins can turn it around.

Wow! I'm sure Keith Davis and the NFL players association are happy to hear that coaches from different teams collude on offers to minimize salaries for the players!! I would be surprised if the NFLPA didn't raise this issue.

Wow. Bill just admitted he and apparently others conspire to keep players salaries down.
"I said you're just costing everybody money here. I said just call me up and ask me if I'm going to match and then you'll know."
