If Bill walks away

I have reason to believe that Jerry's not going to go after the sexy name on this next hire. He doesn't mind spending money, but if Parcells leaves, he's not going to pay someone else $4 or $5 million.

He wants someone in here who he's comfortable with. And who fits that description you might ask?

Well, former Dolphins defensive coordinator Jim Bates was an assistant here for four years and Jerry really thinks a lot of him. You could turn it over to Bates for a season and then make a run at Bill Cowher or you might just stick with Bates if he has immediate success.

The other guy to keep in mind is Norv Turner, who would certainly receive a ringing endorsement from Troy Aikman. Jerry has a great relationship with Turner and you need a guy who's had success with young quarterbacks.

I know those names don't blow you away, but you shouldn't completely dismiss them.

The moment Sean Payton turned down the job in Oakland and returned to Dallas I had assumed he would be the successor. Norv seems golden but how many opportunities do you give a guy that has not been able to produce?

Posted by Jailbird Doogie @ 3:05 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

I like the Norv Turner idea. I do wonder if Jerry is tiring of the lack of power or control he experiences with BP. I give JJ credit - he knew he'd have to cede a ton of control when he hired BP and for better or worse he's stuck to that. If BP goes, does Jerry hold on to at least one of the reins again?

Posted by Sean Shoptaw @ 3:05 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Jerry should go hire Mike Singletary, he's gonna be a great head coach. Bates or Norv would be terrible, we don't need retread coaches that have been proven failures as head coaches (mainly Norv)

Posted by Buddy @ 3:11 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Assuming Cowher or JJ aren't options, Norv or Mike Singletary. Someone with ties to the state or the franchise. No more New Jersey carpetbaggers.

Posted by Dave @ 3:12 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

I seriously worry about Jerry finding a guy that "he likes". His GM skills leave a lot to be desired. I think he should just be the head coach himself and cut out the middle man, but then, he would have nobody to blame after a 4-12 season.

Seriously - This team neads a coach that will bring some toughness and nastiness. I like the idea of Bates, but I'd prefer someone younger. I prefer Mike Singletary, Ron Rivera, Russ Grimm, and even Rex Ryan of Baltimore.

Success as a coordinator does not necessarily make you a great head coach. I think Norv is a great offensive coordinator, but does not have the "it" to be a head coach. On the flipside of that, did anyone think Sean Payton would do the job he did in New Orleans this year based on his track record with Dallas?

Posted by Paul Hoffman @ 3:12 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

What would it take to lure Barry Alvarez down to Dallas? He was an incredibly successful college coach...may be the one name no one has thought of?

Posted by SweetJimmy @ 3:12 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

I think Jim Bates - while not a sexy name- would be a great choice. A creative Defensive coach- who would make the most of the talent here. Plus seems to have a lot of passion- and players that respond to him. I like the idea-- just don't know if the name is sexy enough for Jerry.

Posted by bruce @ 3:17 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Norv Turner? I like the guy and we won with him calling the offense but the dude had like a 5 play playbook. Everyone knew what was coming and couldnt stop it. We dont have those kind of horses anymore.

Posted by Paul Morris @ 3:22 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Well, I am NOT a fan of the idea of bringing back Norv Turner. He just hasn't done anything at any other stop post-Dallas dynasty.

I agree with some that Parcells is so set in his ways, and untractable, that he holds his assistants back.

I am confused and simultaneously hope Parcells returns and hopes he doesn't. Calgon, take me away!!

Posted by Kevin @ 3:23 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

How about Norm Chow at Tennessee?

Posted by tomf @ 3:24 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

I second the Mike Singletary Idea.

Posted by Mark McLeod @ 3:27 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Bill Cowher--how depressing. A Cowboys coach needs some flash (i.e. Jimmy's hair, Bill's bleached melon). BC looks like he's got a perpetual head cold.

Posted by Will @ 3:28 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

With all the fat $$$ given to college coaches now (Saban) I wonder what incentive they have to gut it out and become successful. So, I'd stay away from NCAA guys.

Bates could be good - or he could be a guy like Jim Johnson (PHI) who's peak will be DC not HC.

Living in DC, Norv is a huge walking joke, like the Hon Heath Shuler (D - NC). Waiting for the sports radio guys to start the jokes here.

Posted by shoptaw @ 3:35 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Singletary is my top choice and should be Jerry's as well . . . he wouldn't have to pay a lot and he'd be the best choice. we get a great young O coordinator to go with him and we'd be set.

Posted by Mike @ 3:36 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Why not bring in Norv as the Head Coach and Troy Aikman as a QB/Passing game coordinator. We could then give Michael Irvin some pompoms to lead the crowd as the new mascot to replace Rowdy!

Posted by Big Tom, NYC @ 3:36 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

I hate to speculate... Either one would be a good choice but they'll both want to bring in thier own system.

That meas another two years of devlopment. I don't know if I could handle it. Oh, wait, I'm a Cowboys fan, I can handle anything...:)

Posted by Jon in McKinney @ 3:42 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Dinner at Mi Cocina's says Parcells and TO are both back next year!

Posted by CowboysFanSinceBirth @ 3:43 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Mike Singletary please!! Bring his wild-eyed, crazy, knock the crap out of you playing style to this gutless defense. Great man, great player and on the rise...and a native Texan to boot. Wouldn't get much better.

Posted by James @ 3:44 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

No college coaches please, the chances of that working are slim. How many current coaches in the NFL just came for the college ranks? One, and he was hired 2 days ago. Bill will be back for one more year, then who knows, maybe Cowher.

Posted by DougO @ 3:47 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

It's a shame Parcells got turned down for the Giants GM (groceries manager) job. It would have killed two birds with one stone, helping the Cowboys and ruining a division foe.

Bates was the first name that popped into my mind as a potential head coach. But he's a bit long in the tooth, and it would be preferred to have a younger guy who might stick for the long term. Cam Cameron comes to mind, but I also like the style of defense Bates would bring. At least give him the DC spot.

Posted by klb @ 3:52 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Give Norv another chance....why?? That would be a give up hire. The guy hasn't done squat as a head coach. There are a number of top notch assistants in the NFL that may actually be successful as an NFL head coach. Is Jerry smart enough to find one of them? Doubtful. No college coaches either. The JJ deal is the exception not the rule. And what's all the talk about Cowher? Jerry and the fans are ready to run Parcells out of town, and it's only been four years. Is Jerry (or the fans) planning on giving Cowher 15 years to bring another Super Bowl to Dallas?

One more thing....of course no one knew how good Payton was going to be. He was kept in the background and never allowed to speak, but that's crazy Bill for you.

Posted by James @ 3:55 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Looks like we are looking for a new defensive coordinator. I wish Mike the best and if we stick with the 3-4 give us someone that knows how to blitz out of that alignment...please!

Posted by JJ @ 3:58 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Zimmer was just pciked up by Atlanta. And so it begins...

Posted by Creth Davis @ 4:10 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

don't forget that Bill has to feed his cat

Posted by JB @ 4:11 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

What about Jim Mora. He's a great coach with expirience. I also like Bill Cowher.

Posted by Chuck H. @ 4:16 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Seriously, what has Norv Turner done during his past two stints as head coach?? I think he's one of those guys who is a better coordinator than a head coach. Bates could be an intriguing possibility. When he took over for Wannestadt, in Miami, the players loved his aggressive style and felt he had the makings of a good coach down the road. One person who is a darkhorse candidate is Rex Ryan. The Ravens defense has been very solid (runs the 4-3) the past few years and many insiders say he's due for a shot at a coaching gig.

Posted by Stevie D @ 4:21 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Bates or Turner or both would be OK.

Whoever first said Mike Singletary is a genius. Defense wins championships and right now ours needs to learn how to get fired up. Mike would rock.

Posted by Rodney in Nashville @ 4:21 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Oh yeah, let's bring back another unsuccessful re-tread from the Jimmy Johnson staff in Norv Turner. How about Campo again? Heck, let's give Zimmer a crack at it.

While we're at it, why don't we propose another Rocky movie.....

Posted by Andy R, Big D @ 4:24 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Forget Bill Bates. What has he accomplished in the NFL. The #1 candidate should be Rex Ryan. He’s a 3-4 guru with an impeccable pedigree. This is the guy our team deserves.

Posted by Mike @ 4:34 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Clearly you know something. "Reason to Believe"? Come on...Spill the beans!

Posted by Jeff @ 4:50 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Cam Cameron, the OC from the chargers. He has done a great job with Rivers and their offense. And he can bring someone with him from SD, who would know how to run a 3-4 defense properly.

Posted by Uncle Hulka @ 4:52 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Get Regis Philbin. He's good at turning a lot of things around. Look what he did for "Millionaire".

And get Rosie O'Donnell for defensive line coach. Then those buggers would get to the quarterback!

Posted by Chris @ 5:01 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Pay Belichick $10 mil per year, and let's win some Super Bowls!!!

Posted by corra @ 5:34 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Please!? Norv Turner!? After his stellar jobs with the Redskins and Raiders? Great coordinator, crummy head coach. I like Chow or Singletary. The Human Chin in Dallas? Hopefully never!!

Posted by James OConnor @ 6:43 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

If Parcells wants to be in NY, good riddance. Call Cowher and pay the Steelers what they want! Parcells was inept at best at closing games out and innovation is not his forte'.

Posted by mike @ 10:20 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

One name to keep in mind is Les Miles at LSU. Jerry is very familiar with him since he was on the Cowboys staff several years ago. He is also a very intense coach and his teams at Okie State and LSU have been very good.

Posted by nick @ 11:54 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Bud Foster, D coordinator at Virginia Tech. Always a nasty defense, has a "hybrid" system he uses in college, and this past season's #1 defense in the nation. no head coach experience, but it would be an awesome upgrade at D coordinator. as Big Bill was quoted, he loves the intensity of the guys coming outta va tech, like willie pile

Posted by L.Sanchez @ 10:03 AM Wed, Jan 10, 2007

Jerry, Should "CAN" T.O & Bill!!! Two hard headed guys we do not need. It would be easy to handle if they win but we all know that answer!! The game has passed Bill on by. I like JIm Mora... !!

Posted by Gary @ 1:37 PM Wed, Jan 10, 2007

The thing to remember about Norv's failures as head coach are A) where it happened (Wash and Oakland - both are coach killers) and B) that his offenses were still pretty good.

Posted by Dan @ 7:50 PM Mon, Jan 22, 2007

Hire Mike Singletary.

Today.

Posted by Mike S. @ 4:51 AM Tue, Jan 23, 2007

How about at least granting a few succesful Hispanic coaches an interview to replace Parecells. Such as Barry Alvarez or even better Rich Rodriguez. I agree Norv jsut doesn't have it to be a head coach. He is a better support guy/coordinator. To be honest I felt Bill lost it a long time ago. I gave it some hope based on his resume that you have to respect. We need young raw talent to bring back a spark in Dallas. Experience does not always equal better.
