I received a phone call this morning that Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams had been shot and killed in a drive-by after attending a New Year's party in Denver. Williams, who starred at Fort Worth's O.D. Wyatt High School and then Oklahoma State, once did an NFL draft diary for us and we've kept in touch over the last couple years. I remember he was always referring to league scouts and coaches as "those cats" and he was one of the most animated kids I've been around. The last time I talked to him was after last year's Thanksgiving game. He and another former OSU player, Tatum Bell, loved playing football together and they'd flourished in the league. Darrent, who was 24, had two kids, Darius and Jaelyn, that he talked about constantly and it just breaks your heart to think about them losing their father at such an early age. m |

Kind of puts yesterday's loss in perspective...

Wow! Horrible news. Especially, so early in this man's wonderful life. I often follow sports as some sort of break from reality. Instead, sometimes it reveals reality and that there is a greater purpose for which I must live! My prayers are with Williams family.

It's tragic. Everybody has the right to go to a New Year's party, but pro athletes -- NFL players in particular -- really ought to stay out of nightclubs.

My girlfriend woke me up this morning with the news that a Denver CB was shot and killed. This is really too bad. My prayers, and I'm sure the prayers of Cowboy fans every where, go out to his family. Hopefully, they can get through this.

Good point Patrick. There are "haters" all over the place. Terrible indictment of the state of our society for such senseless acts. I never played ball on a pro-level, but I look the part and people use to try to make me someone famous and start something. So I don't do such places...period. I hope the players across the league realize that enough is enough and it's not worth it.

Stunning. So young to lose his life, (probably) over something really stupid and insignificant. He probably wasn't even the target. Odd, the randomness of life. Condolences to his family, teamates.

I live in Denver, but a Cowboys fan nonetheless. I remember reading Darrent's column w/the Cowboys before he got drafted and he was what he was...a great young man. It doesn't matter if he was at a nightclub or not, he was minding his own business, yet cats in Denver are jealous of athletes. I'm praying for justice and comfort for his mom and two children. A win at Seattle has lost it's perspective for me, I'd rather have this young brother's life back.
