Zim to Atlanta

Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer has accepted the same position in Atlanta, according to multiple sources.

If Bill stays, secondary coach Todd Bowles would probably replace Zimmer.

That would create an opening for Mike MacIntyre, who has more than paid his dues as a quality control/asst. secondary coach.

Back with more details in a moment.

Good riddance, Zim!

I would rather replace him with somebody outside the organization. This defense needs a complete overhaul.

When will the narcissim end?? why promote from within instead of bringing in a new d coord? and more to the point, why promote the guy responsible for the most glaring weakenss in the defense? where's Wade Philips? What's wrong with Jim Mora? What about Coughlin's defensive staff? Aren't they sick of working for him about now? What about robbing from New England for a change?

Good for Zimm!!!! His time in Dallas is greatly respected and appreciated. What experience does Tood Bowles have with the 3-4 or 4-3? Need to look outside the box for our next OC and DC!!

The secondary coach? God help us.

Congrats to Mike Zimmer for getting off of this sinking ship. He did more here with nothing. He will do great in Atlanta!

Thanks Bill, you has been....

Todd Bowles definetly needs to go before anybody

Posted by Tom F @ 4:48 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

See Ya Zim. We hardly knew ya.

Posted by Bob @ 4:51 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

I think that is good for Zim. He is a good defensive coordinator but he doesn't like the 3-4, and I think that showed up in our 3-4 defense this year. I think he will do good using the 4-3. Bill almost has to stay now, or we will be in a really big mess.

Posted by Chuck @ 4:56 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Everyone calling for Zimmer's head through this year's defensive collapse better hope this isn't a case of "be careful what you wish for." It's not the least bit improbable to think the Dallas D will struggle next year while the Atlanta D gets significantly better.

No, he's not a 3-4 guy. Yes, the team struggled. But the guy wasn't in the job by accident. He could coach.

Posted by Erik @ 5:00 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Ten bucks says that Atlanta has a Top 5 defense next year under the 4-3 scheme. Any takers?

Posted by P @ 5:24 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

I guess that's one way to keep yourself from getting fired. This is great news. Zimmer can take his Idiots guild to defense in the NFL play book and destroy the Falcons. Now if we can just dump Bradie James, and Roy Williams we'd be golden.

Posted by Brent @ 5:35 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

I liked Zimmer a lot as a 4-3 coach but he never seemed to take advantage of our talent in the 3-4.

Posted by DAVO @ 5:41 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

seriously, OUR secondary coach is to coach the entire D? that is a scary thought considering the problems back there...looks like another shoddy season for the D next year...good riddance to zim, he sucks, but seriously, bowles?

Posted by Chris Metcalf @ 5:49 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Zimm was an awesome coach when he had the 4-3 and made some really solid defenses in years past with some pretty mediocre players but the Cowboys need some fresh blood and someone that understands the 3-4 better. As far as making Bowles def. co. give me a break. That entire def. coaching staff was horrible. Thanks for the great years Zimm!

Posted by paul @ 5:54 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Zim is a good guy, his defenses could never, ever hold a lead though. good stats and winning are two different things. anyone really believe the boys would make THE stop that would win the game? i agree with the other posts that we need a DC outside of the current staff, and parcells if he is staying shouldnt have a real veto in the deal. he is leaving the cowboys in the "lame duck" position as everyone knows that if he comes back it is for one more year only

Posted by Chuck H. @ 6:13 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Erik, I'll take that bet. The guy isn't a good coach. I always thought a good coach can take a bad situation (being told to learn the 3-4)and still be productive. He was told to learn the 3-4 and couldn't do it. Rex Ryan, on the other hand, utilizes 4-3, 3-4 and 46 defenses in his scheme and has flourished. So yes, I'm in on that one, Erik.

Posted by Go Romo! @ 6:45 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Just thinking.. I may be wrong, but isn't Tom Coughlin a defensive coach who may be coming available soon, and he is a Parcells guy. I have not heard that name tossed around at all for coordinator positions.

Posted by JB @ 6:50 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Zimmer was bad in the end and the defense proved it. How could you call a play where NO one covers the full back.

Posted by Tom @ 6:54 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Erik, start countin your money !!! $$$$$ Good for Zim. Atlanta will come of age under Zimmer. Top 5 is right Erik !!!

Posted by Charles - ATL @ 9:14 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Paul and Chuck H, good points. Does anybody remember that Zimm, after his 1st horrifc season as DC, then went begging the top defenses about how to get it done...settling on Tampa Bay and the cover 2? The rest is history. Good guy, who was ok with what he had talent-wise statistically but was never an innovator, nor effective against top offenses, nor could ever hold a lead consistently..4/3, 3/4..didn't matter. And his teams always faded late in the year. Bring on Mike Singletary as DC!!

Posted by Chuck H. @ 9:44 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007

Charles, you are absolutely right in the way teams could find a plethora of ways to attack Zimmer's scheme. The one thing that drove me crazy is he was never able to make good half-time adjustments. And all that garbage about his "number one rated defense" in 2003 makes me want to stick pencils in my ears. Why? Well, the opponents combined total of wins/losses for that season was at 96-112. Only four teams, that season, had 10+ wins (Patriots, Jets, Eagles, and Panthers). So, basically, we had the number one rated defense playing a schedule that had a winning percentage under .500 As Parcells would say, "it is what it is."

Let's see what Todd Bowles can do. His body of work with the secondary is not outstanding.

Poor Zimm - leaves one poor defense to take over another. At least he has a pass rushing DE there. He also has some sick athletes at CB. Big problems at safety, too. Good luck, man.

TODD.BOWLES WOULD MAKE A GREAT HEAD COACH, HE'S A WINNER GIVE HIM A CHANCE TO PROVE HIMSELF LIKE TONY DUNGY & LOVIE SMITH.

Posted by V @ 12:10 PM Mon, Apr 02, 2007

Todd Bowles is a great coach and outstanding person. Just give him a chance. He has the experience on the field and in the office. Good Luck TBowles, just do you.

Posted by Marvin Harris @ 8:36 PM Mon, Apr 09, 2007

Todd is not only a great coach but a great person and leader all together. I played briefly with him and Paul at Temple. I am so glad to see him here with my Cowboys. He is a great asset and should get the position.
