Mat McBriar picked a pretty good year to make it to the Pro Bowl. The Australian punter is scheduled to be a free agent, and the Cowboys would like to sign him to a long-term deal. The low tender given to restricted free agents this year will be $850,000. The first-round tender is $1.85 million and the first- and third-round tender is $2.35 million. The new collective bargaining agreement allows for a different category of restricted free agents with a second-round tender worth $1.3 million. Because McBriar was undrafted the Cowboys would not receive any compensation if they put the low tender on him. I can see him getting the second-round tender if they don't get a long-term deal. |

Speaking of McBriar, who's the odds-on favorite as the holder on place kicks in 2007? If I remember correctly, McBriar tried out for the job last year and didn't make the cut. I like the idea of having a QB as the holder because it increases the number of options on a fake--or a botched snap or hold. However, I doubt Tony Romo will hold again after the Seattle debacle. Too many bad memories. Maybe a back-up QB?

I never really thought of a punter as an MVP type, but he puts oomph in the phrase "defense and special teams" because he helped the defense with his kicks.
Anybody know who uncovered him? Wasn't Hoffman was it?

don't let big bill off that hook so easily! it's SUPPOSED to be the backup QB - and it was when Bledsoe was the starter. BP just never felt like - and IMO the media has let him get away with this - he could ask Bledsoe to take that job once Romo was the starter. Put in a guy who's not winded or bleeding or emotionally whacked from a first down becoming fourth down after review, and who knows what might have happened...

Which reminds me, is there any speculation as to whom the Cowboys will pursue for backup QB?

It isn’t entirely clear from their press releases who in the Cowboys organization actually discovered McBriar, but he wasn’t a complete unknown. After a successful high school career playing Australian football, he did well at Hawaii and earned all-WAC honors. He was signed by Denver in 2003 and played for them briefly before being traded to Seattle and then finally released. But even in Seattle, he was already showing his capacity for being a hard-hitting special teams player, unusual in a punter. I also noticed, though that the Cowboys picked up Paul Paulesesccu from Oregon State. Over here in the SEC I don’t tend to follow those West Coast teams much – anyone know anything about him?

I think McBriar deserves all this special treatment. I saw him play and he’s really good in defense. When he’s there you can’t even afford to blink or you’ll miss one half of your life.
