Bum's son

The Cowboys have received permission to speak with Wade Phillips, son of former NFL coach Bum Phillips, about their head coaching vacancy.

From Mobile, Ala., Phillips said he was not aware contact had been made. He would bring 30 years of NFL experience. He owns a 48-39 record as a head coach with New Orleans, Denver, Buffalo and Atlanta, however the stops with the Saints and Falcons were interim gigs.

He went 45-35 with the Broncos and Bills. He has spent the last three years running the San Diego defense, using the same 3-4 scheme as the Cowboys.

With Jason Garrett talking to the Cowboys about the head coaching and offensive coordinator jobs, it's not out of the realm of possibility Phillips could land the head coaching job with Garrett as the coordinator.

Wade Phillips is old, we need to get away from old guys and hire a coach that can last a long period of time. Dave from the avery johnson article is right.

HC: Norv Turner
OC: Jason Garrett
DC: Mike Singletary

Youth and talent. Might be a good team.

Hmmmm... Wade Phillips as head coach and Jason Garrett as OC. Not sexy, but it could be pretty effective. Don't just dismiss Phillips out of hand- look at the defenses he's put together in Buffalo and San Diego (imagine if DeMarcus Ware got cut loose the way San Diego cuts Shawne Merriman loose.) And Garrett has always had a lot of football smarts and has been in demand around the league the past couple of years (I think Cleveland wanted to talk to him and Sean Payton wanted him in NO)

This may not have the "punch" fans are looking for, but it sure looks like it could have solid potential.

Hey JB...who cares about old. And by the way, he's not yet 60. We need a 3-4 coach (which Singletary is not). I DO NOT want Norv. Look at his record compared to Wade's. I actually like the idea of Wade with Jason. I think under Wade's direction, a couple of internal personal shiftings (Anthony Henry to Safety and Roy Williams to a hybrid safety/linebacker), and a couple of key free agent signings (Adalius Thomas & Champ Bailey), I think you are looking at a 12-4 team.

No.. No.. No.. Just give Garrett the Job.. no NORV.. No Wade.. go young!! get Wade Wilson to be Offensive Coord. for defense.. get a dynamic Linebacker coach who is young also.. But please don't bring in these guys who couldn't get it done when they had a chance.

I'm all for giving Garrett a shot at HC, but not Wade Phillips. He's a fine DC, but he's already failed at two HC jobs and the Cowboys don't need a retread. Garrett would bring a fresh approach, which after dealing with Parcells' tired old man act, would be quite refreshing.

I just can't believe that some people are seriously considering Turner. Hey, I love the guy, but a head coach he isn't. Why not just hire Rex Ryan or at the least Phillips to light a fire under this underachieving defense and leave Sparano alone?? Parcells was the biggest problem we had on offense and without his chains I think Sparano would flourish.

Wow John. You want to break the bank on Bailey, who will be 29 by game 1 of 2007 season, and Thomas, who will be 30.
I'm amazed because there is a 26-yr-old named Asante Samuel who is pretty good. We already have talent with D Ware and an improved Bobby Carpenter as well as Ellis and Burnett at outside linebacker. If Julian Peterson can come off this injury, I'm sure Ellis can.
If we're going to spend that money let's do it on Samuel and other areas (olinemen/nose tackle?)

I second what Chris wrote above:

HC: Norv Turner
OC: Jason Garrett
DC: Mike Singletary

IF Jerry stays out of the way, this could be an incredible combination of coaches. I think Jerry finally did the right thing 4 years ago, but he did it with the wrong guy. Parcells was a little too old and a little too tired and didn't have the fire! But letting him make the decisions was the right thing to do. Now, do it again Jerry -- hire these guys and let them run the team!!

I think that hiring Jason Garret is a good decision by Jerry. I'm reluctant on him being a head coach unless he has an offensive assistant to help him with the offensive load and a defensive coordinator that really knows the 3-4 so that he could run the defense without being handcuffed by Jason. If not Jason would be calling plays and having to keep up with everything that's going on offense, defense, & special teams as well as managing the game. If the defensive coordinator really knows the 3-4 that's one less thing that Jason would have to worry about even though ultimately it's his responsibility as head coach. I don't know about Todd Bowles as defensive coordinator. I recommend hiring one of the linebacker or defensive line coaches (preferably linebacker coach) from one of the successful teams that run the 3-4 defense (Steelers, Chargers, or Ravens) and promoting them to be our defensive coordinator.

It's easy to jump on the youth bandwagon, but there are plenty of examples of failed young coaches, too. Young doesn't always mean "fire"; it sometimes just means inexperienced and over his head. I think Phillips is a good coach; so is Turner. Whether or not either can take the Cowboys to the next level, though, remains to be seen (if either is given the opportunity). Phillips was reasonably successful at Buffalo, although he lost both playoff games following 10-6 and 11-5 seasons. He also took Denver to a playoff appearance at 9-7, but lost the playoff game there, too.

I'm starting to like the Phillips/Garrett combo. It gives you experience at HC right away, with a young guy to groom for the future. It also takes care of both sides of the ball.

Garrett is a bright guy, but maybe not quite ready for the HC spot. This would be a good way to go.

The team was 9-7, but could have/should have easily been 12-4 or better. Change is needed, but not wholesale. Let Garrett tweak the offense, work with Romo, etc. And let Phillips work with the defense and show them it's actually OK to play agressively. I like it.
