I snickered when I read that the Cowboys might make Jason Garrett their head coach. No way could a guy with that little coaching experience be ready for the job, I figured. But a light bulb appeared over my head as I was rolling in my hoopty. Avery Johnson had even less experience before taking the Mavericks' reins, and I reckon that's turned out OK. There are a lot of similiarities between the two. Both were unspectacular athletes who lasted a long time in the pros because of smarts and work ethic. They both played for championship teams and under great coaches. Both established relationships with the meddling, megarich owner hiring them during their playing career. Now, coaching in the NFL is a wee bit different than the NBA. NFL coaches are in charge of 53 players and more than a dozen assistants. NBA coaches are in charge of 15 players and, well, I guess the Mavs have a dozen or so assistants. Oh, Garrett would have to deal with one major challenge that Avery didn't. There are no T.O.-type personalities in the Mavs' locker room. |

but could we be so fortunate to have lightning strike twice?? If JG turned out to be half the coach Avery is, I think we could have found a Coach and a Quarterback for many, many years to come.

The Cowboys have asked for and have gotten permission to interview Wade Phillips.

I hope Jason get the head coaching gig. I like it better than getting some retread. This is the Dallas Cowboys, be bold.

I love the idea of Garrett as the next head coach. My only concern is can he keep Jerry from meddling too much again.
If the players know that Jason or any other coach can't do anything to them - like Terrel Owens - then Jerry is setting up the coach to fail. In that scenario, it won't matter one bit who the next coach is.

I think hiring Jason Garrett is exactly the kind of bold move for the Cowboys. How about Mike Singletary for assistant head coach/DC.

Dave, you said it perfectly.

Jason Garrett is an interesting scenario, although he seems a bit green still, as he hasn't even been a coordinator yet. My vote is still for Mike Singletary. He seems to have the right combination of that command required to be a head coach and the skill and understanding of the game to get the schemes and personnel in place.
On another note, check out the interview with Tony Romo on ESPN, it seems like he's recovered pretty well and moving forward.

Jason Garrett should be the next head coach or O. Coordinator. Head coach is a better fit though because of his work ethic and he is a stratigest. Wasn't Tom Laundy a stratigest?????

Jason Garrett is a name that came out of nowhere, but it really seems like a good choice. This would be an exciting hire.

Don't forget that Tom Landry was only 35 when he was first hired as the Cowboys head coach, and we all know how that turned out too. So it's not like Garrett doesn't have the maturity to handle the job. He certainly has the intelligence (being an Ivy Leaguer) as well.
This would be the kind of dynamic hiring that Jones needs to make. We don't need another retread like Wade Phillips, et all.

I can see Garrett as Offensive Coordinator but I think he needs more time to develop if he's going to be our head coach. Bring in Norv Turner as head coach to help Garrett along and then go find someone that will finally turn our defense into a pack of mean, junk yard dogs. Finally, it's the offensive and defensive lines, Jerry!! Get some domination there and a lot of our other problems will be less glaring.

Avery has one other thing over Jason Garrett, and his name is Dirk Nowitzki.
However, I would love to see Jason back in the fold at Valley Ranch, whether it is as head coach or offensive coordinator. The parallels between them are impressive. Carving out a nice career in their respective leagues more on their IQ than their given talent. Those kind of hard workers tend to excel as coaches.

I'm thinking Jason Garrett is an inspired idea. The Cowboys need three things above all else: energy, fresh ideas and intelligence. JG could bring all three.

Don't let the boyish face fool you. Garrett is no pup. He played under Jimmy Johnson and Norv Turner as Aikman's backup. He coached under Jim Fassel, an outstanding offensive tactician. He worked with Nick Saban and helped make Joey Harrington into a competent NFL QB. He has learned with some really good coaches and is at an age that's not unrealistic for someone to earn his first head coaching position.
It would be nice if he had a couple of years experience as a coordinator under his belt, but if he has head coaching talent, that isn't going to change. Look what happened with Sean Payton, the heir apparent to Parcells. If not now, it might be never.

This here's ernest t bass and, yes, the rumors have made their way back here to the mountain. And they're all true. I am an old, angry, mostly white redneck. That said, I was the first (and you could look it up) to suggest Lovie Smith as HC. Dang, the mere mention of Mike Singletary as DC makes the viager stouter. Jason Garrett sounds wonderful as OC. Seems here the most valuable trait for all these positions is that special something that makes guys want to win for YOU and each other. Remember when Landry died and all those former players, from the most diverse and distant of backgrounds, wept like babies because of their relationship with the seemingly cold and insensitive Man. Turns out he was neither and those characters, for some reason, played their guts out for him and each other. That's what we need, someone, regardless of title, that can turn rich kid prima donnas like Terrell Owens and Duane Thomas and Roger Staubach into humble winners.

Hire Garrett now as HC or lose him like Payton. If Phillips is HC w/ Garrett as OC, we may have one good season before someone else snags Garrett as their HC. Look at the Mike Tomlin hiring. That guy had one impressive season...he's young, fiery, and BOOM...he's gone! Phillips (or anyone else) won't sign a 1 year deal, which will leave our coordinators as hot prospects next year should their units excel.

Don't know what you'll do, Tim. According to Ed Werder, Parcells helped interview Garret at VR. What kind of snottiness will you come up with if Garrett does well with the team Parcells put together, plus he has a hand in helping get Garrett hired? And no matter how snarky any of you want to be--any success a coach has will be with the team that Parcells totally overhauled. Just like Jon Gruden was successful only with Tony Dungy's team. Remember that, y'all.

I cannot believe that so many people are in favor of this. Garrett has 1! year of NFL assistant coaching experience, and did anyone see Miami's offense this year? Hardly the equivalent of the Vikings D. If you want to talk about a qualified coordinator with actual experience, consider Ron Rivera or Phillips. Maybe with Garrett on board as OC, he can be like Avery eventually.
Posted by Kevin @ 12:41 AM Thu, Jan 25, 2007
The call should be on defense. Grab Rex Ryan (although Jerry won't) and let him run the D. Let Garrett run the Offense and let him hire a Jim Fassell like guy as a QB coach. He can coach QB's that is for sure and their relationship should be good.
Alternative B is Garrett as HC, Bowles as DC, and Fassell or someone of that talent at OC. Dom Capers would have been AWESOME as a DC, or for that matter Dick LeBeau, but it appears that won't happen. Any 3-4 guy that zone blitzes, i.e. Baltimore, SD, Pittsburgh, etc. should be the target for DC.
As for Singletary, forget about it. He is a 4-3 guy, and currently an Assistant Head Coach, Linebackers with SF. Given that he is an Ass't HC, he probably won't be allowed to interviewed for just a DC job, particularly since SF needs one right now as well. Stick to the 3-4 and pressure the pocket from all kinds of different angles.

Jason Garrett is intellegent and a class act, but he has not proven anything. TO would run all over him. Wade Wilson at least played in the NFL and even made the pro bowl at Minnesota. Wilson is also from Texas and spent some time with the Cowboys. Mike Singletary is the best choice and he would strangle TO if he gets out of line.
HC-Mike Singletary (Texan)
OFF C-Norv Turner or Wade Wilson
QB's-Wade Wilson or Jason Garrett
Def C-'Mean'Joe Greene (Texan)
D ln-Charles Haley (ex-Cowboy)
DB's-Bill Bates

Re: Kevin's "Given that (Singletary) is an Ass't HC, he probably won't be allowed to interviewed for just a DC job ..."
Just like with our Gummint, power, influence and money turn NFL "rules" into wink-winks. Jerry, following Tex Schramm's blueprint, has earned the power and influence. Moolah is no object, either, even if Jerry renews Terrell Owens contract in a stubborn effort to prove himself right. Jerry desperately needs to hire somebody who can salvage his T.O. gamble and, hopefully, save Owens from his own frighteningly self-destructive life.

I think JG is just the ticket. But WHAT WILL REALLY MATTER IS WWBD What would Bill Do!

Let the comparisons stop here!!!
Tony Romo is to Peyton Manning
as
Jason Garrett is to Avery Johnson
as
Bobbling is to a Slam Dunk
and finally
Losing is to Winning
