Despite a terrible month, including first-round playoff loss, Tony Romo said he will attend the Pro Bowl. While sitting in his car, Romo said of the Pro Bowl: "I don't think about that right now but I would imagine I would end up doing that." Good for Romo, he needs to go. But there are serious questions about his ability to succeed in 2007. He is better than Drew Bledsoe, Quincy Carter, Drew Henson, Chad Hutchinson, and a few others. (I like Matt Baker's chance to become the No. 1 guy next year) Romo works hard in the film room and listens to his coaches, but he needs to take fewer chances and make smarter decisions. |

How long until the announcement is made:
Dallas signs Bill Cowher to a 5 year, 25 million dollar contract?
Seriously, the Cowboys suck. Their current coaching staff sucks. They have some great players but they can't seem to use them properly (Whitten, R. Williams & others). Oh how this team misses Sean Payton! The game has passed Parcells by.

are you serious about matt baker?! please don't tell me that we'd start over from square one...
Posted by David @ 12:55 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
The idea that Romo can't or won't be the starting QB next year is absolutely absurd. What in the world are you expecting from a guy getting his taste of the NFL?
Posted by MB in MO @ 1:00 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
Excuse me??? "Serious questions" about Romo's success in 2007??? I don't think so!!! Granted, he doesn't always make the best decisions, but he's only been starting for half a season! Cut him some slack! Gee!!
Posted by Tom @ 1:01 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
"I like Matt Baker's chance to become the No. 1 guy next year"? What in the world are you talking about? No. 1 placeholder?!
I do agree with your comment about Romo taking less chances and making smarter decisions. It was clear that Parcells did not trust Romo to throw downfield/deep against the Seahawks.
Posted by Blake @ 1:13 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
Like every QB you listed, Romo would be better if he had an offensive line.
Posted by Maureen @ 1:15 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
I'd throw this out for thought about Romo. How long did it become Drew Brees to become a top-echelon QB? Several years, if I remember correctly. He had been a middling QB until Rivers was drafted. That seemed to light a fire under him. It also helped that he'd had a few years of experience as well. He's now lighting it up in NO. Hasselbeck has taken several years to develop into a top QB. I seem to recall a pretty boneheaded throw he made a few years ago when the Seahawks played the Packers in a playoff game. Tony, altho he's been a QB for 3 years, has only had actual game experience for half a season. He's going to get better. I really see a lot of similarity between him & Hasselbeck--& Hasselbeck ended up in the Super Bowl. There's no reason to think Romo can't end up the same way.
Posted by Jay @ 1:19 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
Romo didn't take that many chances last game. He didn't have any ints so I don't know what you are talking about. I think the ints and fumbles from last month will get better once Flo and Rivera lose their jobs.

So I assume that Tony Romo will not be the holder for the Pro Bowl squad
Posted by dan @ 1:24 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
Is it just me or did that ball for the botched field goal , look extra shiney? it looked like someone rubbed it down with armour-all
Posted by Ed Martin @ 1:27 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
Why not give Romo another chance? Lets not get off the Romo bandwagon so quick....

"(I like Matt Baker's chance to become the No. 1 guy next year)"
umm...are you serious? I assume you're kidding. Romo will be just fine. I agree with you re: his need to gamble less and play smarter, but I'll take him anyday over Eli Manning.
Posted by Derek @ 1:44 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
Matt,
You were right, Romo started going downhill once we removed Drew Bledsoe from the top of the blog and replaced him wiht Romo...we cursed ourselves.
Posted by Will @ 1:44 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
Are you serious about Baker?
Romo will be fine if Dallas gets a good QB coach. I think he's gotten this far perhaps due to Payton's influence over the years.
Chris Palmer is the kiss of death for QB.
Posted by Bluestar @ 1:44 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
He needs to stay home and not embarrass the Cowboys anymore. Now you know why nobody drafted that idiot. We could have had Brees and now we are stuck with no QB again. Its amazing how a backup QB starts to look like a backup QB after a defense has some film on him and prepares for him being the starting QB.

Romo is a sound young QB and will be great someday.. I am an IGGLES fan and that makes me the Antichrist down there, but I am also a football fan. don't let him get that down....oh and if you want to pay us back for TO you can give us the Kid..

So I was watching the Giants and Eagles play, and when the Eagles were driving for their game-winning FG, the camera panned over to Akers practicing his kicks, and the holder taking practice snaps. And then I realize that Romo never had a chance to take any practice snaps, since he was busy being a quarterback at the time.
So why did Romo keep the holder's job after he became the starter? Shouldn't Bledsoe or someone else have been doing that job? Maybe a different person could have at least warmed up with a few practice snaps before going out for the fateful FG on Saturday, and that may have made the difference.

Matt Baker? Why not ask where Clint Longley is hanging out? enough with the piling on - Tony Romo made a mistake in what was ostensibly his rookie year and certainly his first playoff game. This isn't Jackie Smith ending a career with a drop in the end zone of the Super Bowl, it's a starting QB doing a backup's job because the coaching staff didn't have the wherewithal to get Drew Bledsoe's butt over on special teams. Why does it matter? Because backups aren't winded, bleeding, or second-guessing themselves all over the place after a 1st down catch gets reveiwed into a 4th down kick, they're running in fresh for one play and one contribution, one action.
Let's hope someone is reminding the guy that without Tony Romo in 2006 the Cowboys aren't even in the playoffs. With Tony Romo in 2007 and with this mistake behind him and them, they're years ahead of where they were with Bledsoe. And on to much more than just a playoff win in a season without hope of going much farther.

Is Mr. Watkins serious about Matt Baker? And while I realize the fumble was bad, do you think the Defense could of stopped the Seahawks from getting into FG range? I don't. We need to see the bigger picture, like if Roy Williams decides to cover? or the D can stop the run play after the fumble on the 1.
Posted by Will @ 2:13 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
O, by the way - if Romo does go to the Pro Bowl, I wonder if he will the FG/PAT holder.
Seriously he might be the only specialist on the NFC squad - the irony of it all.
Posted by Mike @ 2:22 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
Romo going to the pro bowl is a joke. He beat some of the banged up and/or just bad teams he played but lost to all but one of the good teams and some of the banged up/just bad teams as well. Yeah, they beat the Colts but so what, so did Tennessee and Houston. Romo may eventually be a decent QB but never Hall of Famer unless Jerry can put together as good a team as he did for Troy.
Posted by Jonathan @ 2:23 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
There are tons of players who have simply fallen out of the spotlight after screwups in the playoffs, but the way Romo handled it afterwards, actually OWNING UP TO IT, makes me think he's got what it takes to become a better quarterback.
In truth, I became a true Romo fan after the dropped snap. Romo 07
Posted by Steven @ 2:44 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
If Romo goes into this offseason and focuses solely on football and cutting down on some of the mistakes he made he will be fine. No more US Open qualifying. He will only get better with a full offseason as the starting qb. A more experienced Romo, a healthy TO, a healthy Greg Ellis, and hopefully a draft like we had two years ago and the Cowboys are right back in the Super Bowl contender category.
Posted by Brent @ 2:58 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
Good, Romo needs to go and get his mind away from the playoff debacle. Then he needs to take a vacation to get his mind off football. When he comes back he needs to be fresh and ready to get to work.
Posted by Merritt @ 2:59 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
Sigh. So quick to throw away Romo. He made a mistake, he fumbled. The only reason the Boys even made it to the playoff was because of him. Give the kid a chance. Geesh. Instead of focusing so much on Romo, why not ask what's up the defense? What about the play calling? What about drops and fumbles from just about everyone when it mattered most? Surely Romo's not the only one who lost this game...
Posted by Bigfan @ 3:06 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
Someone needs to have their head examined if they truly think Baker would even have a chance over Romo for the starting job. Geeesshhh!!
BTW... Brees should have been the Cowboys starter this year.
Posted by Eric @ 4:21 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
You Romo bashers are funny. It is his first year in the NFL. Cut the guy some slack! Aikman won how many games his first year? ZERO! I think it was seven games in his second year, right? Let Romo go into next training camp and season as the starter and let's see how he does. The Cowboys defense the second half of the season, especially after Ellis went down, are more to blame for the collapse at the end then Romo.
He is certainly better than anyone else I have seen start for the Cowboys since Aikman retired.
Posted by Sandy @ 4:24 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
Seems to me Romo's problems began about the same time the defense fell apart, I'd say there's a strong correlation there he was almost constantly playing from behind with little run support and facing a ferocious pass rush, sure he has some rough spots but he's basically a rookie, give him a little time.
Posted by corra @ 4:56 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
i'm still not sold on romo, but what else is out there? if the midget can check his ego at the door then he might have a chance.
Posted by lexi @ 5:07 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
give the guy a break....atleast romo can drive us down the field and get to the 1 yard line...bledsoe threw interceptions on almost every come from behind drive last year. romo getting us so close and then missing hurt alot, but not being close at all hurts even more. he'll learn and experience is the best teaching tool there is! hang in there!
Posted by Chris P @ 6:31 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
Cowher's not coaching next year. Focus on signing his Defensive Coordinator!!! That'll add 2-4 wins to next year's record!
Posted by mike @ 7:14 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
How slick was that ball. I saw the ball that Akers kicked and it had no shine and it was raining in Phily. Who can handle a greased pig? I think we have been set up

Remember, Payton tried to get Romo from the Cowboys. He knew what the kid had. Bottom line is that Romo is a quality QB. If you read any of the articles about Romo, the one thing that always comes through is that the guy is an extremely hard worker and always tries to improve. With the learning experience that was this year, and an off-season where he knows he is the leader and this is his team, things will continue to get better.
Posted by maverick @ 7:21 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
Look Watkins, compare him to Aikman and Staubach's first year and tell me Romo didn't do better. He'll be fine.
Posted by kameleon_o @ 7:46 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
I say we replace Calvin Watkins with Kevin Blackistone.
Posted by Skins1 @ 8:53 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
I'm a Redskins fan. My team didn't make the post season this year. Still, the Dallas game made this one of my favorite post seasons of all time. Owens. Tuna. Tony "Oh No!" Romo. Gotta love it.
Posted by Jeff @ 9:05 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
Romo should definitely go to Hawai'i and enjoy himself. He needs to deal with the mistake, then come back and be ready for minicamp. After all, he will need to learn a new offense from a new coaching staff. Romo will be fine as long as he stops pressing so much. Besides, I do not want to spend another $74.99 plus shipping and handling for a new QB jersey.
Posted by Lance @ 11:06 PM Mon, Jan 08, 2007
Romo should go. The Cowboys wouldn't have been in the playoffs without him. Roy Williams is the Pro Bowl fraud.
Posted by BC the PD @ 1:23 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007
Ditto on the Roy Williams is the Pro Bowl fraud comment, Lance. If you watch the game look for #31 following receivers into the end zone. Roy was voted in by WRs in the NFC as a Thank You for their inflated stats.

It would be interesting to know who was behind the rush to get Romo on the ballot a mere 4 games into his fledgling career. Surely even his staunchest supporters (I am one) by now are well aware that the kid, like any young QB, is a work in progress. The Pro Bowl supposedly is a recognition of those who have demonstrated a mastery of their position. If his own coach was stunned by his selection, one wonders how his presence there will sit with the other all-stars, especially given the fact that so many accomplished and deserving players have never been (e.g., Fred Taylor). Of course it's not his fault that a desparate Cowboys nation lost its collective head and flooded the boxes with Romo ballots. If the silly Cowboys nation had had its way, they'd have signed the kid to a Peyton Manning type contract the day after T'giving--though JJ has been wise enough to take a wait-n-see approach. Romo, in good conscience, should bag the Hawaii trip and immediately set to work on becoming the player he needs to be just to secure the confidence of his coach and GM. Right now, he does not have the credentials to hang with the league's best & brightest. This is not a knock on him, but on the airheads of Cowboy nation who put him in this awkward position. DON'T TAKE THE CHEESE, Tony.
Posted by Todd @ 3:09 PM Tue, Jan 09, 2007
Romo will be just fine, when the defense went down hill, Tony thought he could be the savior. He needs a balance attack and a decent attacking defense, that can get to the passer.Hell a decent pass rush can make Roy Williams look like Cliff Harris.

Tony Romo should follow this Asian proverb:
A Winner is a loser that tries again.
