Sweet! I was hoping he'd be in the mix somehow. At least they're talking to him.

Regardless of outcome best and most intriguing name yet
If nothing else he could end up D-Coordinator !
No, not a lateral move he is not Coordinator now ! and is likely being passed over in S.F. for that position
TRUE LEADER ! ALL DAY BABY !

I have no idea what kind of coach he is, but watching how intensely he played the game gets me excited about what he would be like as a head coach.

Good move. Turner's and Phillips' experience deserve respect. Singletary looks like someone on the rise, like Garrett, but who's been brought along in timely fashion, being now an assistant head coach/DC. These two energetic, respectable guys could be the way to go for the future.

I attended Baylor when Singletary played there and even had a class with him. He's focused, intense, and motivated. He could be a great choice for the Cowboys.

Any chance that Singletary is interviewing for either HC or DC? Might Norv want to bring in Singletary as DC if he gets the job?
Posted by mark mcleod @ 5:30 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
Feels right somehow. Kind of like Ditka in reverse.
Posted by Nando @ 5:34 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
Why do I get the feeling that Turner has the HC job locked up and we are just interviewing Singletary as our next DC....I sure like the sound of that!
Posted by scott m @ 5:35 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
This is good news! Singletary would be some defensive minded toughness to our team, while still providing youth and energy.
Posted by bigles @ 5:36 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
is he a head coaching candidate or is he a defensive coordinator? someone Turner would be comfortable working with?
Posted by gary @ 5:37 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
GO Bears ! (BU).....Now Jerry's working outside the BOX.....This would be a marketing BONAZA, plus the entertainment of Mike giving T.O. the famous at the line-of-scrimage dead "eye" stare!!
Come-on Jerry, DO-IT.
garyin roseburg, or BU grade 1980, SWC champs!

Wait, wait, a man who conducted himself in the right manner, played hard, was a motivational speaker, and knows Baltimore's 3-4 scheme and Buddy Ryan's 46 scheme? Wow. Hiring Singletary as DC would make me perfectly happy with Norv as HC. Please let this happen.
Posted by Tom @ 5:50 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
Does any know if Singletary has experience with the 3-4?
Posted by rusty shackleford @ 5:51 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
Calm down people. Just because he was a great player doesn't mean he is a good coach, let alone defensive coordinator. It scares me that JJ seems to be relying on name recognition.
Posted by GaryL @ 5:56 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
Judging from the timing and the quote about Norv saying he would be able to assemble a defensive staff, I would say that Jerry plans on offering him a DC position at a salary the Niners can't possibly match. Norv left yesterday, talked to Jerry today and then tonight we get permission to talk to Singletary. Somethings fishy in SF.
Posted by Revolver @ 6:06 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
This is for the HC position, but I don't know if he is ready for the job. Maybe he could be DC, but it would still be considerd a lateral move for him. I should point out that every coaching move is considered lateral now unless someone is being made head coach. Coordinators are classified in the same category as position coaches and assistant coaches.
Posted by graham CANADA @ 6:06 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
PLease if you are bringing Norv as HC, and JG as OC---Bring big Mike as DC!!!!!!
He could certainly keep TO in line LOL
What an exciting sounding staff already!!
Please Jerry do this Get all 3!!!!!!!
Posted by billy @ 6:17 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
Let's hire Singletary for our offense and give him the duty of being TO's personal babysitter. I think he may be the guy that would keep him in line.
Posted by Wade @ 6:18 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
Singletary cannot be hired as the DC without permission from the niners because he is an assistant head coach currently. So, it would be a lateral move if he were to become the DC
Posted by mitchell @ 6:19 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
Turner: HC
Singletary: DC
Garrett: OC
Posted by Dave H @ 6:21 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
No offense to Bradie James, but could Iron Mike maybe suit up and play? If not during games then on pratice sqaud so he could hit T.O.
Posted by Don S. @ 6:22 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
Torn on this one. I like the name but I was hoping that Dallas would go with a little more experience in the DC that didn't have the same talent as the HC. In other words, with Dallas going with an inexperienced OC, I would hope they go with Norv but then hire an experienced DC.
But all that said, I like the name and I liked him as a player. I know as much about him as I do Garrett so no idea how this will work out.
Posted by Don S. @ 6:25 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
One more comment. Seems several people *may* owe Jerry an apology. After taking him to the wood shed for talking to one of the minority candidates already on staff people were ripping him for faking the "Rooney Rule".
Posted by scott @ 6:28 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
I am just glad Jerry is taking his time on this one. BTW singletary is not currently a Coordinator he is the LB's coach in SF.
Posted by JB @ 6:36 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
Singletary is a good defensive mind. Our defense, with singletary as DC, could, along with the offense, pave the way to another championship.
Singletary+Garrett+Turner(or other HC)+next years team=CHAMPIOSHIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by Rob @ 6:39 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
No, it would not be a lateral move if Singletary becomes the DC. He's currently the "assistant head coach for defense" in SF, which is quite a weird job title by the way. But becoming the DC somewhere else would indeed be a promotion.
Posted by JimmyDean @ 6:44 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
The Niner's will not allow Turner to take Singletary with him. He is under contract so the Niner's can deny that, and you can bet they will if the Cowboys take Norv. So don't count on a Norv/Jason/Mike trifecta.
Posted by jared @ 6:49 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
singletary is the right man for the job. he commands respect. he is a great leader, motivator, and human being. who would you be more likely to listen to: singletary, turner, or phillips? easy answer...
Posted by andy @ 6:53 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
Rob,
I'm glad you pointed that out. I mistook the Morning News' description of him as a misprint. I mistakenly assumed he is SF's DC.
It is puzzling. Talk had me convinced Norv was the one. Still could be, I suppose.
Posted by Kenny @ 7:01 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
I watched this guy all week at the Senior Bowl practices. He is going to be a STUD head coach one day!
Posted by Mike @ 7:31 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
This sounds great. The 49ers just interviewed the Linebackers Coach from the Chargers Greg Manusky to be there defensive coordinator. They just passed up Mike Singletary for that job. If the Cowboys can bring him in to run the Defense along with Norv and Jason that would be a very smart move by Jerry. Good Luck !!!!!!
Posted by rs691919 @ 7:33 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
It would be difficult for SF to deny Singletary the DC job at Dallas when they themselves passed on him, although they do have that right.
Posted by CowboysUberFan @ 7:39 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
Yes! I've been hoping to see Singletary in the mix. I think a good head coach has to instill a bit of fear in his players, and Mike scares me a lot more than Norv or Wade. Hopefully Singletary is as good as I think he might be.
Posted by Wade @ 7:40 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
The hierarchical rules for NFL coaches are simple --
HC is Level 1
Asst HC / DC / OC are the second level
Position coaches without the Asst HC / DC / OC title are the third level
Singletary is at the second level
So, for example, if you want to prevent Bowles from leaving for a DC job elsewhere, you can simply add the title, Asst HC (which comes with some added compensation obviously) without making him a DC
Those are the rules ...

Wow! I'm excited now. Somehow, someway Jerry needs to find a spot for Singletary on this coaching staff. It's been some time since a "no nonsense" guy was on this staff. BTW, I would love to see T.O. or the media try to play with Mike (or for that case Jerry; would Jerry try to overrule Mike?). Be it HC or DC...Jerry please find a spot for Mike Singletary!
Posted by Sean @ 11:36 PM Mon, Jan 29, 2007
As long as it is expressly written in his contract that he gets a free shot at TO everytime he runs his mouth to the media, hire Singletary right now.
Posted by ernest t bass @ 1:26 AM Tue, Jan 30, 2007
Somebody please send all these comments to Singletary at Valley Ranch in the hope of coaxing him home. Even if he does nothing more than follow Terrell Owens around and stare at him, I want him doin' it wearin' the Blue & Silver!

We need a man--hire Singletary! He is intense!
Posted by Otis Campbell @ 4:08 PM Tue, Jan 30, 2007
Garrett can handle the Offense, Bowles can handle the Defense, and Singletary can scare this team straight...to the Super Bowl!
Mike Singletary for Head Coach!
Posted by Bear @ 1:41 PM Thu, Feb 15, 2007
I hope Singletary is not dumb enough to take the Chargers job. Even though it's a head couching job. He should at least talk to Marty first. Don't get me wrong Singletary is great, but he should go somewhere were he stands a chance. Nobody should take that job until A.J. Smith is out of the picture.
