Chargers considering ex-Cowboys coordinator

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that longtime Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer is also in the mix to become the Chargers' head coach.

Seems like a strange fit. I can't imagine the Chargers scrapping the 3-4 with the personnel they have. Zimmer, who recently left for Atlanta, is a 4-3 guy who never appeared comfortable running the 3-4 under Bill Parcells.

Or perhaps Zimmer, similar to Sean Payton, will suddenly morph into a creative mastermind after getting out from under Bill Parcells' thumb.

I doubt it - I just don't see Zimmer 'morphing' into a first-year creative wundercoach. More than anyone, before Parcells bowed out, I wanted Zimmer off the coaching staff. I know players liked him, I know Deion liked how much he cussed, but over the seasons, I just started equivocating 4th quarter and late season meltdowns at the most inopportune time with Mike Zimmer's units. I could be wrong about him. I'm curious to see what his teams do from here on.

Ron in B'klyn. You are dead on man about Zimm. And you are not wrong about him. He may surprise teams for a while with some aggressive blitz packages and coverages, but teams eventually figure out what he's up to...leading up to the meltdowns in the 4th quarter and the better offensive teams getting the best of him from the get-go. I've said this b4, he's not an innnovator or good game tactition. But the Falcon fans will be entralled with him (with the talent on the D) here for the 1st 6-8 games, then the collapse will occur again that doomed Mora. But back to the Boys. Looking for more sacks, more turnovers, and more intimidation with Phillips' D. Ranking should be in top 10.

Zimmer was a good 4-3 coach. I don't think he ever bought into the 3-4 and thus could never sell it to his players. But then again the Chargers are interviewing him for the Head Coaching spot. Go ahead and hire him. Then you Chargers fans will know what it was like for us Dallas fans under Dave Campo !!!

Zimmer was already the defensive coordinator before Parcells, so his true identity is already a known quantity. He is to the DC job what Danny White was to the QB role in comparison with his predecessor, Staubach: adequate, just not quite spectacular, nothing that has that intangible 'wow'.
