Charlie Waters, the former Cowboys defensive back turned radio analyst, may know Wade Phillips as well as anyone in the Dallas market. He spent seven years working with Phillips in Denver, the last two as his defensive coordinator. Waters offered insight into the new Cowboys’ coach in an interview this morning with Norm Hitzges on The Ticket. The highlights: -- Phillips’ approach. “His coaching style is different than any other person I’ve been around. It’s kind of Bum-esque.” -- Phillips the motivator. “Wade’s teams, the magic he has going for him, is that he makes those players feel like they can conquer the world. He builds them up. Sure enough, they play better than they’re capable of playing. That’s the case. Everywhere he’s been, he’s made average players better at every juncture.” -- The defensive genius. Phillips has a reputation for building strong pass rushes. Waters said Demarcus Ware and Company will benefit. “You think, ‘Gee, he’s been lucky.’ It’s not luck. Wade develops someone at every team.” -- The lack of excitement about the hiring. “You’re kind of underwhelmed by Wade coming in. I knew it was going to be that way. … He’s the master of the understatement. The players are going to respond to how he coaches, for sure.” -- Building a staff. Not a problem, Waters said. Phillips is “probably the most popular coach in the NFL.” -- Phillips’ system. “He does what is necessary to win. He will not force a system on a club. He will evaluate the club and personnel he has and build his team around it accordingly.” The bottom line from Waters: “If we’re patient, he’s going to win here.” |

Sure wish Phillips would wear a Cowboy hat and boots on the sideline like his old man did. What a likeable family the Phillips have been in pro football. Good fit, good choice.

Maybe we should hire Charlie Waters to coach Roy Williams? He and Cliff Harris did the job well back in their days for the 'boys...
