The heat is on Garrett

Count me as on board with the Wade Phillips hire. Considering the uninspiring pool of candidates, he was the best choice. He's won as a head coach, and there's no doubt he will improve the Cowboys' defense.

Will Phillips be a success in Dallas? That depends on an offensive coordinator he didn't hire.

Jerry might have made a genius move by hiring Garrett. There's no questioning the redhead's smarts and work ethic -- the traits that kept him in the NFL as a backup for so long.

But Garrett is an absolute unknown as an offensive coordinator. Is he the right guy to groom still-inexperienced Tony Romo?

OK, gotta get on a plane and head to Valley Ranch.

Don't forget about TONY SPARANO. He coordinated the offense last year and did a great job. He is still a coach here and can tudor Garrett.

I agree Dan. Sparano did a good job last year and can pick up any slack created by Garrett's inexperience.

Sign former Cowboys FB, Jamar Martin. The guy can block & open up holes.

Garrett's running his version of Norv's offense. The FB will be in play! Old time running!!

It's hard to evaluate Sparano last year. The offense had decent statistics, but it didn't attack and it wasn't consistent--particularly in December when it really mattered. One suspects that this was due to Parcells, but it makes evaluating Sparano's ability to call plays very difficult.

How can anyone say the OC did a good job for the Cowboys last year? Did you not watch the Seattle game?

Seattle's secondary had guys picked up off the street, and instead of taking advantage of that situation, we had a game plan that featured Julius Jones, a journeyman running back, instead of our ALL-PROS, Terry Glenn, Terrell Owens and David Witten.

How come we managed to NOT score 30 points against that defense?

For that matter, how come we didn't get Glenn and Owens ten touches per game, and Witten at least 7 touches per game?

WE HAD THREE ALL-Pros in Witten, Glenn and Owens!

Who deludes himself that we fully utilized them last year. HAD OUR OFFENSE been blowing people out, as they should have been, THAT WOULD HAVE TAKEN PRESSURE off our collapsing, undersized defense.

Instead of Parcells close, nail-biting game plan, we should have allowed ourselves to get into offensive shootouts, which would have highlighted our strengths, instead of trying to win by getting the ball to journeymen running backs.

I agree that it's presumptuous to think that Garrett will be the OC. To me, a more likely scenario is Sparano as OC and Garrett as QB guru. If Sparano does well, he'll become a HC somewhere, and Garrett will move up to OC. If Sparano doesn't do well, he'll get canned, and Garrett will move up to OC. To me, a more interesting question is where does this leave Todd Bowles? Is he going to be the DC? If not, why didn't the 'Boys cut him loose and let him shop his talents around the NFL?

Ok, I liked his Dad, Bum and he was my second choice if not Norv. Now, hire Norv Turner. Norv is the last great offensive coordinator the Cowboys have had other than Norv's pencils clutching, chain smoking mentor Ernie Zampese. They combined for 3 Super Bowls in the early 90's. Since then we have only been to the playoffs a few times and won once. Garret is a QB coach at best. I'm sure Jerry means well but I have as much faith in him finding an offensive coordinator in Garrett like he did in finding a replacement for Aikman with 2 baseball pitchers and Quincy Carter. A proven great staff from top to bottom is what it will take to win immediately.

The play calling against Seattle was horrible. Towards the end of the season teams copied what the Saints did to contain Romo and the coaching staff never countered or adjusted. The Cowboys should bring someone in to help Garrett.
