A case for Porter

Got this scathing e-mail from a pal of mine:

Just 'cause some Pittsburgh writer and some ESPN writer/scout (who wasn't good enough to be a full-time scout for an NFL team, by the way), say that Porter is no longer good doesn't make it fact, Bro.

Duh, most players pick up their sacks against bad tackles. And most of the time, if you've noticed, Walter Jones shuts down pass rushers. Duh. Most good offensive tackles do that, Bro.

Maybe Porter is a system guy; all the ex-Steeler linebackers (Kirkland, Brown, Bell come to mind) except Vrabel (who's basically a down lineman and not a linebacker) don't do so well when they leave. But just become some shmuck with a laptop says he's through, as the great George Gershwin once wrote, "It ain't necessarily so."

Seven sacks, 40 tackles, two picks, three passes defended in 14 games are good numbers, especially for what people call a "down" year. After Ware, those numbers would probably make him the second-best defender on the lowly Cowboys' defense. To be sure, your lowly Cowboys, with their sloth-footed safeties, cover-nobody corners and transparent tackles could most definitely use a dose of Porter's energy.

In closing, you're a fool.

Porter was a feature player in defense geared toward his skills. Cause havoc b/c whatever you miss, Joey Porter, Troy Polamalu will pick up.

A good friend of mine is a lifelong Steelers fan and smart NFL fan, too. He thinks Cowher put up with a lot "stuff" from Porter (freelance, trash talk, run the clubhouse) and now with Tomlin in town, management isn't going to pay him $5M. Pittsburgh goes through cycles and he thinks they're on a dangerous precipice - could go either way.

I don't know if Porter has anything left and neither does this idiot. Why does he believe his opinion is better than someone who is paid to know about these things. And while the Cowboys D could use some help it is not without talent. Duh, names like Ellis, James and Newman come to mind. Bottom line, bro, your opinion bears no more weight than anyone elses so don't be so disrespectful and go back to editing your "I love Porter" blog.

Tell your naive pal, come to Texas. I'll be happy to explain it to him what "lowly" Cowboy fans handle such situations....expeditiously. :)

For the record, "the lowly" Cowboys defense gave up less points against the Colts and Seahawks than the mighty bears. Please explain that ??? This guy probably didn't see Bobby Carpenters game against the Seattle. Personaly, I think the Cowboys have their OLB's in Ellis,Ware and Carpenter. If your going to break the bank roll might as well go after Adalius Thomas.

Sounds like Joey Porter wrote an anonymous email today.

BOTTOM LINE IS - THIS GUY IS NOT A NEED. The boys have lots of talent in the front 7 which, under Wade(sorry Maureen) will have a chance finally to show that talent. Spend money on the offensive line and defensive secondary.

By the way Maureen, if you are still reading, you might as well get used to the comparisons back to your heart-throb. You are going to see them all year and most of them will not be to your liking. Perspective is something you don't have but in your bitterness, you should try to keep in mind that Big Bill Quit, he didn't get fired.

Let's be real if the cowboys where to go and get Porter it would be a GREAT help. We need some attitude on our DEF. We need a player like him that can get the other players up and can back it up.I love we people can't stand a guy who talks trash and says they should just play the game. Well lets be real that is the game we did it when we where younger and we will continue to do it when we are getting paid to do it. Why not that is part of what got you there anyway. What happens on the field stays on the field. if someone takes you out of your game by talking trash you really do not have any game. Bring on PORTER JERRY. We need our Micheal Irvin Back... someone who is not scared to say it and bring it. The talent is there we need a guy to believe in the talent.
