I'm deeply offended by Todd Archer's insinuation that there's something wrong with a 10-year plan. College was the best decade of my life. It also really bothers me that Todd would resort to using facts to shoot down one of my ridiculous theories. I like arguing with Calvin Watkins much more. I admitted last night that "scrubs" was too strong a word for the last 10 guys picked 22nd overall. It's a mix of scrubs, JAGs and TBDs. But Rex Grossman is a scrub. The Bears went to the Super Bowl despite him and lost because of him. Bryan Thomas is indeed coming off a good season for the Jets. But it should be noted he had a total of 6.5 sacks in his first four seasons. Not sure I want to wait that long for a first-round pick to make an impact. I discount the contributions of all DBs to the Patriots' title teams, because I'm convinced Bill Belichick could make a good secondary out of four guys from the DMN sports department. New Orleans giving up three picks for Tebucky Jones is simply evidence of the Saints' stupidity. I stand by the Curse of the 22nd Pick theory, facts and logic be darned!!! |

Would you have even bothered to write that blog entry had the Cowboys stayed at 22 in 2004 and selected Stephen Jackson? I highly doubt that.
What you fail to consider is that the 22nd pick lends itself to reaches and picks to address needs, rather than simply selecting the ever-popular "best player available." The reason for that is because the 22nd pick is a playoff bottom feeder that fancies itself one or two players away from being a legitimate contender. So, they will reach for a player that addresses a need without much regard for value.
While I do appreciate that you can laugh at yourself, "Tommy Boy," I do think that you're way off base. The whole back end of the first round is full of duds and never will bes. Not just the 22nd pick.
