Beat man extraordinaire Todd Archer wraps up the Cowboys' uneventful first day of free agency. I apologize for being late posting this, but my bosses insist of giving me duties other than running my mouth on this blog. Here's the highlights: * As Todd posted last night, the Cowboys couldn't reach a deal with OL Leonard Davis. He's being wined and dined by the Redskins now. Giants have also been mentioned as interested. * OT Marc Colombo is testing the market. The Denver Post reports that the Broncos are interested. Kansas City OT Jordan Black, a Dallas Christian alum, could be an option of Colombo gets away. * The Cowboys are interested in Brad Johnson and Patrick Ramsey as Tony Romo's backup. * The Cowboys touched base with Joey Porter's agent. There will be a lot of competition for his services despite the fact he is coming off a down season. * K Martin Gramatica is close to getting a deal done to return. * Calvin Watkins reports that Terry Glenn will be return as expected. |

I've never been so relieved that the Cowboys did so little. There were few really good free-agents out there this year, and the best ones were for positions for which they didn't need to break the bank (CB. LB). The guards and tackles are mediocre on the market are mediocre at best.
The best thing the Cowboys could do is re-sign Columbo, and take your pick of back-ups QBs. Then wait to see what falls through the cracks.

Glad to see Martin coming back.

I would take a good look at Patrick Ramsey. Not only will be have a chance to backup Tony Romo but, if he does get get to play (I am hoping Romo stays healthy), the Redskins are on the sked twice each year. Not sure what terms Ramsey left but, he was a first round pick they gave up on....

I agree. we don't have to spend the big money so why do it? Make good on your draft picks and keep saving that money for when we have big needs to fill and big names to re-sign. and P.S. - anyone remember when Joey Porter's dogs killed that horse?

Cool.

Who is actually proposing signing Brad Johnson? Don't we want a chance if Romo goes down? Apparently not---I can live with Ramsey.

Jerry has learned the free agency game. Let the market cool and pick up solid players at reasonable prices.
I would be a lot more excited about Jordan Black at a good price than Leonard Davis at any price (especially a high one). Jordan is an athlete who played basketball and could probably play guard or tackle.

This is high-priced shopping. When you go shopping, you go for value. As it stands, Davis will be over priced. Columbo, who knows? If they can get Black, Damien McIntosh (late of the Dolphins), or even Cosey Coleman (ex-Brown). That would be fine. You have to remember that the draft is deep at guard this year. You can get a starter into the third round. The way to go is to get an O-line guy under thirty and a free safety in free agency. Then go for a G, WR, and pass rusher in the first three rounds of the draft.

We should look at a veteran to continue helping Romo on the sidelines. As for Davis, let Snyder be the one to overpay for another free agent bust.

I'm going to propose an idea...trade for Chris Simms. He is solid, with expierience, and you could probaly get him with a 3rd round pick.

Hello, was it i who said garcia was going to end up in tampa..i need to feel the love people

Please, not Ramsey. He is terrible! I live in DC, I've seen it first-hand!
I thought Davis would be a good addition, but if Snyder's looking at him, he must not be that great....

I couldn't agree with Greg more. The money being thrown around for average talent at best is mind boggling.
Wes Welker is a fine player. But $5 million per year offer from the 'Pats? That's crazy. Clements $10 million per? Has Deion Sanders been reincarnated?
The 'Boys need to keep their checkbook in their pocket for now. Columbo needs to get a deal done.
Let the frenzy die down and look for the bargains. Staying out of salary cap hell like the Redskins are going to be in for a while is crucial.

i really think we should get joey porter he wood add a whole new intensity to our defense with him n demarcus flyin around the edges

Columbo allowed very little pressure from his man all season and when you consider it was his first year back after a long injury rehab it says alot about his upside. He should be the top priority because after investinh two seasons in two young OTs on the right side and then not resigning either would be a pitiful waste. Pay him what he's worth. If we let him slip away and then pay big bucks for another LB like Porter I'll go nuts.

After Columbo I would like to see Ramset brought in for at least 3 years. I liked what I saw of him early on before the Redskins let him get killed so often. His game face (Concentration)when he was a rookie reminded me of Aikman's. I think he can still be developed.

I like New England's style. They didn't mess around and settle for leftover scraps. They got what they wanted and got quality. They got the best pass-rusher, Adalius Thomas, and then started working on going after a RFA WR from Miami, Wes Welker, thereby doing double damage by hurting a conference and division rival respectively. Nice!!!

Everyone here knows what this team needs to succeed and take it to the next level. It isn't another pass rusher. It isn't even another guy in the secondary. No one can tell me the talent on the defensive side of the ball is inferior to that we had in the secondary or along the D-line a few years ago when this team could play defense but not generate points. The defensive philosophy was the only thing that failed them last season and that will be corrected by a different style coach. What this team needs to succeed is the best offensive line money can buy. Why do we have to wait around waiting for one to develop? Why do we have to settle for whats left after the UFAs are picked over? I want to know what we have to give up to sign the RFA Max Starks away from Pittsburgh. He was a 3rd round choice and he is a 6-8 330lb player on the rise. What is the likelyhood any first and third round choice the Cowboys could draft where they are slotted that would be superior to him? The draft is a crap shoot anyway. Just look how Rogers and Peterman turned out not to even mention the wasted 2nd round pick of Johnson. I say we make a run at a proven guy with plenty of youth like Starks, even if it means giving up the 2nd and 3rd round picks and then pair him with the best available guard left in the 2nd. With luck that could be Blaylock. How does that sound on the right side?
