Trade up or down, but don't stay at 22

Tim MacMahon   E-mail   News tips

No. 22 has been awfully good to the Cowboys. It was worn by should-be Hall of Famer Bob Hayes and surefire Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith.

But 22 is a stinker of a draft slot. The Cowboys have been stuck with spares -- DE Willie Townes (1966), RB Charley Young (1974) and TE David LaFleur (1997) -- the three times they picked 22nd overall. And it's not just cursed for the Cowboys. Check out the scrubs selected with the last 10 No. 22 picks:

2006 – OLB Manny Lawson, North Carolina State (San Francisco)
2005 – WR Mark Clayton, Oklahoma (Baltimore)
2004 – QB J.P. Losman, Tulane (Buffalo)
2003 – QB Rex Grossman, Florida (Chicago)
2002 – DE Bryan Thomas, UAB (NY Jets)
2001 – CB Will Allen, Syracuse (NY Giants)
2000 – LB Chris McIntosh, Wisconsin (Seattle)
1999 – DE Lamar King, Saginaw Valley St. (Seattle)
1998 – SS Tebucky Jones, Syracuse (New England)
1997 – TE David LaFleur, LSU (Dallas)

You've got to go all the way back to WR Andre Rison in 1988 to find a star drafted 22nd, and that fool went in the tank after Left Eye lit his house on fire.

Fortunately, Jerry is hip to this trend. He never said so on the record, but I'm certain he traded down in 2004 because of the 22nd-pick curse.

EDIT: OK, "scrubs" is a bit strong for the last 10 No. 22 picks, but there sure ain't an instant impact guy in the bunch.

Just like last time we had the 22nd pick and traded it to Buffalo, we should slide down and pick up a # 1 next year. Hopefully, we won't have to slide out of the first. If we do then the top three picks of the second. We can get good value in the lower first and early second. I sure would like to have two picks in the first next year. After resigning Romo and Newman, we will need to find replacements for Flo and Julius next year.

I don't see the Cowboys trading up beacuse of the cost.
Trading down is always a possibility.

The talent level evens out in the 20's. Where the players are rated so closely together. That trading up is not worth it for a team.

But there are exceptions.

Like in 2004 when J.P. Losman was on the board still.
The Cowboys might find another QB on the board at #22. Teams in the 1st part of the 2nd rd. might want up.

The QB? Drew Stanton. One rumor has the Lions trading out of the 2 spot picking up extra picks. Then Selecting a player like OT, Joe Thomas or DE, Gaines Adams.

Then trading back into the late 1st with some of the picks they received to select Stanton.

So the QB who just took his team to the Super Bowl in his first full season is a scrub now? And I think it's a little early to call Clayton and Lawson scrubs as well; they've barely had a chance.

Manny Lawson? Scrub? You better hope the DMN doesn't have a drug testing policy... Lawson is going to be a stud. I'd rather have him then Carpenter.

Check out the work Bryan Thomas did for the Jets last year as well.Tebucky Jones also had a pretty solid career and NE received some nice draft picks for him when they traded him away.

I'd say it is way too early to call him a scrub. In fact I don't doubt he will turn into a very god pick. It is not often you find a DE/LB with WR speed.

The day our GM starts making first round draft decisions based on superstition is the day we should all start focusing on Pro Bowling instead of Pro Football. There is no curse, and the number 22 position in the first round of the draft is just fine. So if JJ decides to trade out of the #22 position, I hope he does it because the value elsewhere is worthwhile, and not because he afraid there's a curse of some sort.

Or, Tim, perhaps you think the best draft strategy is to break out the Ouija board, spread chicken blood around the draft war room, and hire a Tarot card reader as the head of our scouting department.

Dear God people get a grip.

Yesterday I posted that it wasn't worth moving up. But now it seems it isn't worth staying put either...maybe it's not a bad idea to move up.

If you think your team is going to be good then you'll just wind up picking at the bottom of the round anyway over the next few seasons...so why not trade those picks to move up and get someone special even if it seems steep?

Come on man - Manny Lawson is a scrub??? A late - first round steal . . . you could argue he out - performed former NCSU teammate and 1st overall pick Mario Williams.

And Mark Clayton is one of the best young receivers in the NFL - watch him blow up in '07.

They key in drafting well in the late first round is to understand football talent - something Dallas has a hard time doing.

I agree with a previous post. The Cowboys should trade-down, ala, 2004 (trade w/Buffalo). It could net a safety and guard in the second round. Both, possibly from the University of Texas.

Thanks for listening.

I think that Stephen Jones has financially positioned the Cowboys for a top-10 draft pick, and the team's personnel is set up to readily accept a top skill player, such as CJ or AP, so I'm guessing a deal to move up in the draft. Of course, my recent predictions have not been stellar.

Before we decide to move up or down we need to see if any player that we want falls to us. We have to see who's available before we decide to move up or down. That's just common sense.

If the Cowboys are close to a championship as we hope they are, then whats to lose by trading up to get a playmaker/impact player for this year. Forget getting a QB in the first round he will not start and we will not want him to, give Romo a chance. I say trade up to get Calvin Johnson he is in a different class then the rest. If they can't get Johnson forget it and stay at 22 the rest are all the same at that point!

trade the 22nd, a second, a first next year (hopefully a low choice)and brady james to detroit for calvin !!

I don't believe in that type of stuff, Tim. This years draft has exceptional talent and 22 is just the spot for the Cowboys to draft an impact player on defense. The safties and corners that are going to be available at 22 all have the potential to be greatness. Meriweather may very well be the next Ed Reed with his ball hawking skills. Chris Houston from Arkansas is going to be a dynamic corner and if the Cowboys want to win now, than they can draft Houston and move Anthony Henry to FS. I expect great things from whoever is drafted 22 in this years draft, and I expect big things from the Cowboys this year...maybe even an a Lombardi Trophy to add to the collection.

I will say it again. Lets trade the pick for a proven quarterback. Dallas can go the distance this year with a proven qb. Trent Green is available. He could step in now and lead this team all the way. We have waited long enough for players to develop. Win a Super Bowl now or wait on player development. I say go for it NOW.

MacMahon, your an idiot for the fact that you had Mark Clayton as a Scrub. Mark is a homegrown talent the Cowboys should have taken instead of Spears chubby checker non producing butt. Mark was not only All American, All Rookie, and soon to be a pro bowler.

I'm old enough to remember that Willie Townes was no "spare" during his unfortunately brief career. He started as a rookie in 1966, then played well in 1967 before a leg injury in 1968 gave a little-known 16th round draft pick named Larry Cole a spot at left DE that he didn't relinquish until 1975 when he was moved inside to take Bob Lilly's spot at tackle after Bob retired. Willie was apparently a decent player who made some contributions, more than can be said for Charley Young or David LaFleur, so labeling him a spare is a little unfair. Young never did anything, and LaFleur had already topped out when back problems ended his career after a couple of years, so tabbing them as spares seems appropriate, but I disagree with that assessment for Willie Townes.
