The Cowboys won't be on the clock again for a while, so it's time for another boredom-battling top-five list!!! The best draft-day deals in Cowboys history: 1990 -- First-rounder obtained from Vikings (TE Eric Green) and third-rounder obtained from 49ers (DL Craig Veasey) to Pittsburgh for No. 17 overall pick (Emmitt Smith) 1992 -- First-rounder obtained from Minnesota (OG Eugene Chung) and third-rounder obtained from Minnesota (Kevin Turner) to New England for first-rounder (traded to Atlanta in deal that landed CB Kevin Smith), second-rounder (S Darren Woodson) and fourth-rounder (traded to Atlanta in Smith deal) 1989 -- Second-rounder (OL Steve Wisniewski and sixth-rounder (Jeff Francis) to Raiders for second-rounder (FB Moose Johnston), third-rounder (Rhondy Weston) and fifth-rounder (Willis Crockett) 2004 -- First-rounder (QB J.P. Losman) to Buffalo for second-rounder (RB Julius Jones), fifth-rounder (TE Sean Ryan) and 2005 first-rounder (DE Marcus Spears) 2004 -- Fifth-rounder (Jonathan Welsh) to Eagles for fourth-rounder (DE Chris Canty) and 2006 sixth-rounder. I'm trying to be positive here, so I won't mention trading the pick that became LB Derrick Brooks to Tampa Bay for picks that turned into OL bust Shane Hannah, RB bust Sherman Williams and TE bust Eric Bjornson. |

Ok, this was not on draft day, but didn't we trade Craig Morton for the pick that became Randy White?

Ouch. That last one that you "weren't going to mention" was a kick to the stones. Thanks for that...

First-rounder (QB J.P. Losman) to Buffalo for second-rounder (RB Julius Jones), fifth-rounder (TE Sean Ryan) and 2005 first-rounder (DE Marcus Spears)
So far, that one's not looking very good. Spears has been mediocre at best and Ryan is a virtual nonfactor.

The real question is when will Rhondy Weston (1989) get into the Ring of Honor?

I could be wrong, but wasn't the trade w/ Seattle for Dorsett a draft-day move?

Eric Bjornson a bust isn't that a little harsh.

Ok, I just couldn't sit silent on this one. There is one Cowboy's trade that has driven me crazy from the moment it happened. I hated it then, and I really hate it now, yet somehow you put it in the top five? Perhaps you forgot who we gave up by not using a pick we traded? In 2004, when Buffalo took Losman with our pick, we were set to grab Steven Jackson. Anyone notice his 2300+ yds, 16 TDs, and 90 receptions last year? He is light years better than JJ (who we are trying to dump) and Spears just hasn't been worth the difference in talent between those two RBs. This goes down as a bad trade that has left a sour taste in my mouth for 3 years now. No way this was a good trade, this was one of Parcell's draft screw-ups!

I'm with Dave on that one. Bjornson wasn't Novacek, but he was a darned sight better than, say, LaFleur.

"In 2004, when Buffalo took Losman with our pick, we were set to grab Steven Jackson."
Actually, my understanding is that the Cowboys were targeting Kevin Jones. He's been no better than Julius Jones, who the 'Boys got in the 2nd round that year.
Indeed, Julius has been a pretty solid back when healthy. That Parcells and company switched him out for Marion Barber in scoring situations is hardly his fault.
