Cowboys pick a kicker

I woke up from an unplanned nap just in time to see the Cowboys pick Arizona kicker Nick Folk in the sixth round.

That makes me wonder if Wade Phillips has dozed off in the war room.

I'm pretty sure that a pick is a reach if the guy isn't even included in NFL.com's database of draft prospects. I don't get a kicker, period, but I really don't understand taking one not named Mason Crosby.

UPDATE AFTER GOOGLE SEARCH: Folk is 6-1, 215 pounds, so my guess is that Jerry is looking to upgrade the blocking at kicker after Martin Gramatica's season-destroying whiff on Seattle's Jordan Babaineaux.

UPDATE AGAIN: OK, I fess up on doing zero pre-draft research on kickers. Goose did indeed have this Folk character ranked No. 2 among kickers, above Crosby. Still don't understand the pick, but whatever. I was hoping Mike Vanderjagt and his mouth would come back to Dallas, but I reckon that's not to be.

Rick Gosselin just said that Folk was by far the best kicker at the combine, while Crosby was awful. So there is your answer.

Goose just said on the radio that Crosby had an awful combine and likely won't be drafted.

Still, pretty weird.

USA today sports weekly had him as the 3rd best kicker. draftable in the 6th or 7th. i think the thin air in colorado scared people off crosby. he must not have the leg people thought.

Kickoff specialist?

Posted by Greg in LA @ 1:50 PM Sun, Apr 29, 2007

A kicker in general makes me think Jerry dozed off. He's been pretty much opposed to that until now.

Looks like the guy is a kickoff specialist and back-up punter. Neither of which the Cowboys needs. An odd pick, indeed.

Maybe you should do your homework. Best kicker at the combine, plus Crosby stunk on kickoffs at the Combine per you own Hall of Fame scribe, Goose Gosselin.
Goose had him 2nd rated kicker behind Medlock.

I was expecting the kicker, but Crosby not Folk.

This pick is so depressing.

As many of you probably heard, Goose just said on The Ticket that Folk had the best combine of any kicker. He also added that it wouldn't surprise him if Crosby went undrafted because of the terrible combine he had. Goose noted that Crosby was short on all his kicks and kickoffs.
Goose didn't seem to unhappy with Folk here.

This is ridiculous!! Why would you ever waste a draft pick on any kicker? The Boys don't seem to have a clue. Two flawed offensive linemen, a QB that they hoe to convert to a WR, and now a kicker? The good news is that they won't need to pay many of these guys past the middle of training camp.

Nick Folk was the best kicker at the combine. Medlock had some questionable off-field issue but is probably the best kicker over all. Crosby has a monster leg, but struggled with the K ball apparently, according to everything I've read and Gosselin just mentioned how much be struggled in the post season workouts as well.

this from a scouting website:
Weaknesses:
Simply misses too many kicks...Accuracy is shaky, even on the short ones...Has had some kicks blocked.

Notes:
Kicked a 62-yard field goal in the Wildcats 2006 Spring Game...Participated in the Senior Bowl...Recipient of a number of academic honors...Has potential as a field goal kicker but his real value at the pro level will likely come as a kickoff specialist.

So, Nick Folk is (hopefully) going into/getting out of church in Arizona when somebody calls him from the Dallas Cowboys (do you think Jerry makes the call for a 6th rounder?) I'm sure Folk thinks it's one of his boys from college joking with him. There's no html link on NFL dot com about him.

Unless Folk can play DT, CB, FS, WR then we have wasted yet another pick. After round 1 this has been a horrible draft. Welcome back Jerry. Maybe we can close out with 3 or 4 punters

Good God! Is it just me or, if Parcells was still around, is this the type of Jerry Jones idea that Parcells would say, "what, are you crazy?" and veto it? Sigh. I'm starting to get an uneasy feeling about this draft. Feels like we're trying to be too cute.

Posted by zebra @ 2:10 PM Sun, Apr 29, 2007

disgusting and embarassing. The only way this draft is salvaged is if the Browns pick turns into a top 5 which is possible but there sure seems to be some wasted picks this year. Let's wait until the 7th round to address CB, S, NT and LB.

It amazes me how smart people are when it comes to the NFL draft. "flawed" offfensive lineman. I was no Parcells fan but I do agree with him when he said you can't really grade a draft pick for 2-3 years. And what if?? what if this kicker becomes the next Veniterri? You never know, this was a great draft to take some reaches. Plus, we have 2 first round picks next year, one of which could be a top 10 pick. SO I say Kudos to Jerry, he has gambled a bit but he hasn;t bet the farm

Posted by DougO @ 2:55 PM Sun, Apr 29, 2007

And still the most glaring need on the team is at free safety. They also need a backup center and guard. If you're gonna reach, reach for need.

Posted by jacko @ 5:18 PM Sun, Apr 29, 2007

Reach for need? Bull**** If yo uare going to reach, find someone that has some athletic ability at a position that can change games.. Besides, Safety may not be a need with Hamlin. ANd Watkins now has a yeat of experience. Go for it Jerry

Posted by Truefan @ 8:16 PM Sun, Apr 29, 2007

For all the complainers... who would you rather have taken with that pick? Did you see anyone else on the board that could seriously challenge for a spot? If no one was available that was rated at that spot, then why not a kicker... it has definitely been a weakness lately. Lets get some competition in there and may the best leg win!
