Good deal

This is another good deal for the Cowboys because there was no one in the second they just had to have and the turned it into early picks in the third and fourth round and flip-flopped sixth-round picks. I bet the Cowboys grab an offensive lineman with at least one of those picks

Will the Cowboys be making selections this year? It was a good deal though.

Posted by Diddy @ 7:33 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

This may look like a good deal but eventually you HAVE TO PICK SOMONE IN A DRAFT! Doesn't look as good if they were counting on getting one of the remaining WR's with the 2, which I'm pretty sure is what happened.

On a separate note...a 4th round pick for Mike Williams and Josh McCown isn't a bad deal.

Posted by existentist @ 7:33 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

I like this deal to get back the 3 that we gave up for Spencer.

Of course, it all depends on what we do with the picks.

Posted by Lance @ 7:34 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

This deal should hush those that thought the Cowboys overpaid for Spencer earlier. Now they have their #3 back, plus an extra #4.

Posted by Will @ 7:35 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Certainly not a bad move, but Eric Wedge would've given some nice options for the secondary. Get past Henry and Newman and you're very thin. Wedge takes a lot of risks, but, he's a value as a low second - rounder. We'll see what the 3rd round looks like.

Jerry trades down, up, down all around. Jerry, the goal is to pick players not just make trades to hear your name on ESPN.

At number 22 three of the top five receivers were availble. All the top OGs were available. Three of the top five OTs were available. Two of the top five safeties were available. Through two rounds we have a second round DE taken in the first round!

Posted by conrad @ 7:40 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

So, the Cowboys started with 22, 53, 85, 117

They've turned that into Goose's 34th best player, 67, 99, 117

This is great for draft day and those that listen/watch/write about it, but the 2007 team is absolutely no better.

Jason Garrett might be quite a coach in 2008 with 2 top 15 picks.

Posted by Carlos @ 7:41 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Jerry Jones has done alot of wheeeling and dealing for nothing. He thinks he knows how to run a draft but he doesnt. We're back to have medicore drafts

Posted by Steve Ortiz @ 7:42 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

How many of the remaining draft picks will be on the final roster?

Posted by Vick @ 7:47 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

I do not understand the strategy at all. They have dire needs at Safety and CornerBack positions. What are the 'Boys doing for it? I understand picking up a DE is a necessity too. But, isn't the Safety/CB hole more gaping than that of a DE???

Posted by DandyDan @ 7:48 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

This is the old jerry jones! The dangerous one who thinks the draft is an end in itself. He'll end up drafting a dud who can't push anyone in camp, and either be released or stashed on the practice squad. Way to improve your team!

Posted by existentist @ 7:50 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Steve makes a good point. The only way to judge the deals is to judge the players we end up with (and the players we passed on).

I wonder why we didn't take the USC center.

Is this a deep draft?

Posted by Raul @ 7:50 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

This is a good move. Nobody was really appealing in the 2nd round where we were. There are some corners still out there (Tanard Jackson, Marcus McCauley, Daymeion Hughes, Tank Tyler (Feguson back-up), Ryan Kalil (Gurode back-up)). There are also a lot of good third/fourth round quality receivers out there (Aundrae Allison, Johnnie Higgins, and a fast return guy - Yamon Figurs). Good move.

Hey conrad - you kind of forgot that the Cowboys will probably get a top 10 pick next year as well.

They dropped a few picks, but I think Spencer is good and a great compliment to Ware. Yeah, they are trading down, but they are getting more picks and they can fill depth. This team has a weird mix because they are very young in certain areas while being really old in others. So far, I'm in the minority, but I'm happy with the moves so far...

Posted by Joe @ 7:52 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Keep trading down and end up with a bunch of 6th and 7th round picks. Nice! Last time I checked most of the talent was towards the top of the draft.

Posted by Melonhead @ 7:54 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Have to disagree. I don't like this at all. There was real value in the middle of the 2nd round. Steve Smith, Justin Blaylock, Chris Houston, etc. Jerry should have been trying to trade UP from 53 not down. Dallas doesn't need 10 picks, the roster is deep and only 6 or 7 rookies will make the 45 man roster.

Love the first trade with Cleveland obviously, but the rest of the day has been marginal.

Posted by JB @ 7:59 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

shoulda stayed put after the first trade with Bengals. However, net-net, we gave up a mid 2nd rd pick for swaping to a higher 3rd, and 4th and a top-ten 1st next year. Everyone keeps forgetting that in order to get that extra 1st next year, we had to pay for it in this draft. We came out ahead, by far, in draft pick ranking, but as you know, it all depends how we use em. Won't know till next year whether these trades were any good.

Posted by JV @ 8:12 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Chill out naysayers! You all think your Mel Kiper or something. Remember, not all 1st and 2nd round picks are automatic Hall of Famers. There have been many 3rd and 4th (even 6th) that do better. Do you really think that picking your favorite chump is going to get us a Super Bowl ring? C'mon! By the way, how many of you are billionaires or have been a NFL GM?

(crickets)

That's what I thought.

Posted by Whip @ 8:21 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

I liked the 1st trade with Cleveland. But I would have much rather stayed in the high 2nd round and tried to trade UP to get another high 2nd rounder. We probably would have ended up with Spencer AND Jarrett or Rice. That would've been the perfect draft for Dallas.

Posted by The Burger @ 8:25 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Awful...just awful. Any way we can draft a new owner?

Posted by Lee @ 8:29 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Disappointing that we're hanging our hopes on Romo at QB. He did an adequate job coming off the bench mid-year but he's not my idea of a franchise QB.

Posted by Kirby Weather @ 8:40 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Drew, Drew - why are you referring to yourself as "Lee" now?

Posted by Hanker @ 8:45 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Lance hit the nail right on the head. I don't understand the Jerry bashers. Get over it. The firing of Laundry was 18 years ago.

Posted by Chip @ 9:29 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

"...how many of you are billionaires or have been a(n) NFL GM?"

Gosh, JV, I am both. That's why I hang around these blogs...slumming!

If you are also neither, then you are no more qualified than the rest of us, so shut up your ownself!

I actually agree with you: I like our picks. But don't be insulting.

Posted by JV @ 11:34 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Call down Chip. I didn't command anyone to do anything. Also, who's insulting who? It's okay for everyone else to insult Jerry?
