In his revised mock draft, Hall of Fame scribe Rick "Goose" Gosselin projects the Cowboys to pick Texas safety Michael Griffin. Goose notes that Griffin is the best special-teams player in the draft, but my opinion that Griffin would be an awful fit next to Roy Williams hasn't changed. I'd much, much rather see the Cowboys take Florida's Reggie Nelson or Miami's Brandon Meriweather -- safeties known for their coverage skills -- or Texas cornerback Aaron Ross if they address the secondary in the first round. Goose has Nelson going to the Jaguars at No. 17, but the other two are still available at 22. Other Goose gold currently online: He takes a look at prospects flagged as character risks, which takes on more weight with Sheriff Goodell running the league. (I sure hope Jarvis Moss slips to the Cowboys because of allegedly testing positive for reefer last season at Florida.) And speaking of Moss, it's defensive linemen's turn to get an in-depth look from Goose. |

Good Lord, WHY!!! Why on earth would the boys pick up another Roy Williams? Goose, Tell me you are joking! Just what the boys need, TWO safeties who are too slow to be decent cover guys. Come to you senses cowboys!!!! Don't blow the first pick in the draft on a carbon copy of what you already have.

Best special teamer in the draft? Isn't that what 6th round picks are for? And if a 1st round safety is taken wouldn't that push Keith Davis into a "starting" role on special teams anyway?
If its a safety, it needs to be Merriweather. Even if Nelson is on the board. This guy can hit, cover the slot, and roam center field. Kind of like another safety we used to have when Roy Williams had his one great season...

I'm coming back with a 2nd posting because, after thinking this over for a few minutes, I don't believe it. If the scouts are pretty well developing the draft board, they can't be this stupid. I think this is a smoke screen to disquise who they are really interested in, which hopefully will be a Corner or Receiver. The cowboy scouts are too good for this nonsense.

Come on fellas, Rick is just mixing things up because there is no true way of knowing. Michael Griffin doesn't make sense for the Cowboys "right now", but who knows on draft day. I think Griffin is the #2 saftey in the draft. At 22 Griffin may be the best player on the board, if so, I guess we'll be trading down.

Griffin would be a reach at that spot, as much as I love seeing Texas players picked by the Cowboys. Why no love for Merriweather? He should be the number 2 or 3 safety. I surely don't see Griffin being taken ahead of him. Griffin might be there for the Cowboys second pick.

The Cowboys don't need another "hitter" at safety; they need a cover guy who can help set the rest of the secondary

Maybe if we were to trade that spare of a strong safety we have, Roy Williams, than I'd say that Griffin would make some sense, but since our incompetent GM/owner, Jerry Jones gave that Spare Roy Wiliams a boat load of money last year, I guess we're stuck with the spare.

OK, this is not on topic, but has anyone seen the story in the "other" D/FW newspaper where Marcus Spears is quoted as saying he's happy Parcells is gone? Though he's the only one quoted, it is reported he's not the only player who feels this way. Personally, I think Spears should just shut up and start playing like the 1st pick he is. We'll have to wait and see if Phillips' nice guy approach will get more production out of guys like Spears.

Rick - Lets get with the program. Another non- cover safty. Please. Aaron Ross is the man. A good cover corner who should start in the nickel give solid depth to your conerback position and you have a great punt returner as well as a good special team defender. ALSO a defensive back that knows how to BLITZ!!!

Its obvious that Rick has been in the applejack.
This has got to be a smoke screen for some sucker to trade up with Dallas.

Well, I emailed Mr. Gosselin, asking him to use his influence to encourage the boys NOT to draft Griffin. He emailed me back and said A lot of teams think Griffin could be a CB in a Tampa Cover-2 scheme. Holy, Moly. a Cornerback!!---I have always had more respect for the Goose than any draft prognosticator out there but I have to wonder what he is smoking. Griffin has openly admitted he is not a cover guy.

We won't draft Griffin at 22. No way he is higher than 22 on our board and this is kinda how we said we wanted a corner at this time last year. But he is not another Roy Williams. He was used in the box at Texas because they had Michael Huff playing centerfield for 3 years. He may be more of a strong safety, but anyone doubting his coverage ability just needs to watch the Rose Bowl Championship game his junior year to see Griffin make one of most athletic, rangy pics anyone will ever see. He is an athlete and you can't call someone slow if they run a 4.45 forty and a 4.10 shuttle
Posted by kameleon_o @ 6:08 PM Sun, Apr 22, 2007
There's no way we pick this guy Griffin. He's not only another Biscuit playing wise, he also seems just as thin skinned as the original. If we're going safety 1st and Nelson or Merriweather are on the board, you can bet they'd get picked 1st.
Posted by David @ 6:57 PM Sun, Apr 22, 2007
4.45 and 4.10 shuttle.he is a workout wonder..just look back on the games in 2006. almost every single big play the UT defense gave up was because griffin's mistakes. do we want another safety who does not know where he needs to be in every pass play?

That's all we need is Dallas reaching for a player in the 1st rd.! Who's noteworthy tip on Griffin from the Goose is "Special Teams"!
Getting unwanted memories from the 1995 draft. Barry Switzer being interviewed by ESPN. "We're set at every position, were looking for Special Teams help"!
Shaking my head!

Ken Hamlin, remember him, is going to have his hands full just winning the job from Watkins. I disagreed with the Bowe pick, and I disagree with this pick. April fools was a couple of weeks ago, Rick. You still have a lot of players dropping that don't drop on other boards.
Posted by eddie white @ 9:11 PM Sun, Apr 22, 2007
Hi Goose,
You have Dallas taking Aaron Ross in the 1st round and you say he's the best special teams player in the draft. if that's all just special teams you don't take hm in the 1dt round.. Please remember this team was 9-7 last year and lost to Detroit the final game.. Please you need impact players. I would be satified if dallas din't have 5th, 6th or 7th round picks. they should trade them all to move up in rounds 1-4 for more quality players. maybe acquire an extra 2nd or 3rd round pick by moving down, if possible. then use those lower round picks to move up in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. id be happy if dallas finished the draft with
1 1st
2 2nds
3rd
4th rounder ... 5 picks
thanks

It's not that I am opposed to drafting a safety at #22, but, with the acquisition of Hamlin, we don't need to reach. That's what Griffin would be in that slot -- a reach.
I will be amazed if Griffin winds up at #22 or higher when Gosselin publishes his top 100 players. Assuming that Griffin is not, it's just a bad pick, when there will be other players available, who also fill needs, who will be ranked higher.
Does Gosselin really want us to take what is probably the 30th-ranked player in this draft at #22?
Posted by JTD @ 10:09 PM Sun, Apr 22, 2007
I will be crushed if they take Griffin first. I don't see him as a first rounder at all. The first round guy should be a football player with great potential and it is usually a skilled position player. If you want a safety in this draft and you can't move up to take Landry, then wait until the 6th or 7th to take the kid from Maine. He hasn't played anyone but at least he is as strong and can run as fast as Griffin and he is listed as "mean".
Posted by Larry @ 10:41 PM Sun, Apr 22, 2007
Eddie White, you are going the wrong way. This is a deep draft and those late picks can be very important. For instance, Scouts, Inc. is predicting the following players going in the 6th or 7th round, all of whom could be valuable players if not eventual starters.
QB Jared Zabransky
FB Le'Ron McClain
WR Yamon Figurs
WR David Bell
CB Michael Coe
DT Joe Anoai
RB Alonzo Coleman
QB Jeff Rowe
FB Gijon Robinson
QB Jordan Palmer
FB Jason Snelling
QB Tyler Palko
C Dan Mozes
OT Jermon Bushrod
FB Cory Anderson

The thing that jumped out at me in Rick's draft is the slide of Alan Branch at 18, and Levi Brown at 20. I think if either of those guys are still around at 15 or so, the Cowboys should start burning up the phone lines. Based on what he has available at 22, I'd take Ross.
Posted by Lunging Wolf @ 8:03 AM Mon, Apr 23, 2007
There are two possibilities here. 1) You're trying to drum up hits. Good job, I'm back to post a second time. 2) You have some piece of information that the Cowboys could be looking to trade down from #22, and take the Texas kid. If you're gonna do that I'd rather have Blalock in that scenario.
Posted by Ken Holsopple @ 9:48 AM Mon, Apr 23, 2007
I'm certainly no expert on the NFL, but didn't any of you rocket scientists watch the same team I did last year? Am I the only one to notice the Boys getting burned over the top time and again for the last 6-7 games ?
Jerry should forget the wide recievers and select
Micheal Griffin (if available) and nothing but O-Linemen & pass rushers for the remainder of the draft!
Posted by DougO @ 11:46 AM Mon, Apr 23, 2007
If the Cowboys want to take a Texas player with their first round pick it should be Justin Blaylock. He SHOULD be rated much higher than he has been in these mock drafts, and I would be shocked if he lasts until the 2nd as Goose speculates.
Posted by Ray @ 12:18 PM Mon, Apr 23, 2007
If Okoye, Branch, Carriker or Moss are there at 22, take one of them, if not, trade down.
Posted by Dkhurtexas @ 1:44 PM Mon, Apr 23, 2007
The 'Boys should trade Julius Jones and a 4th round pick to Buffalo for their 2nd and one on their 3rd round picks. Then draft Blaylock in the 1st. Sidney Rice and a FS (Merriweather/Weddle) in the 2nd round, and Michael Bush and Daymeon(sp?) Hughes in the 3rd. Then take a all purpose back in one of the late rounds (Garret Wolfe/Ramonce Taylor)

The NFL guru got four correct in this mock draft, after hitting on the last two picks.
So did I in the mock draft I made on the same day, with the Raiders making the smart choice in Johnson. Only I didn't flip flop.
