The Cowboys picked Boston College OT James Marten, a 6-7, 303-pounder who could replace Flozell Adams in the not-too-distant future. Boston College offensive linemen have a really good track record in the league. There's six or seven starting around the league now. But Marten is a reach, according to Goose, who had him at No. 85 in the top 100. |

We definately addressed a need. I was wondering if the Cowboys might spend a pick on Mason Crosby. Hey, a kicker is always a need with us.

I'm a bit concerned with a guy this size only benching 25 reps of 225. But, as long as Parcells didn't draft him, I like the pick.
Posted by Raul @ 8:47 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007
Can't say I like this pick. Would have like a CB or maybe Tank Tyler.

Well, I wouldn't gush over BC OL. Quantity doesn't equal quality. The best part about them is that they usually can play G and OT in the NFL. Marten will get slaughtered at LT, maybe he starts at RT.

Marten is working on a Master's Degree, another trait sure to be pooh-poohed by the envious non-natives.

2 draft choices, 2 indiana products, what, if anything, are we to make of that?
Posted by cms @ 8:54 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007
If Michael Bush slips to us in the 4th we HAVE TO TAKE HIM. Did you guys see him before he got hurt? Definite 1st round talent that could very well be sitting there for us tomorrow. Please Jerry!!!

Great kid. Performed really well at the Senior Bowl. Gaines Adams said that he was the toughest guy that he faced this year.
BC lineman have a great track record in the NFL. Definitely a safe OL pick compared to our recent history. Will not be a bust in the mold of Rogers, etc.
Posted by Louis @ 8:55 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007
You can't judge a lineman by reps, their arms are usually longer than your average player and it makes it difficult for them to bench. Definitely not the area to measure their strength.

This is a whoop-di-doo type pick. If you read the analysis, his future is at right tackle, which means, don't fall for the comments I'm already reading about him being Flozell's replacement. He's too slow and stiff to be either a left tackle or a guard.
God, I hope this isn't another OL bust...
Posted by DandyDan @ 9:01 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007
No worries, jj got the player he targeted. Hopefully, he fares better than Jacob Rogers and Stephen Peterman. If nothing, I bet he scares the opposition on the kick-off coverage team.
Posted by Chester @ 9:01 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007
Solid, no-frills pick. He will be part of the team for years to come.
Posted by eric @ 9:07 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007
Kiper has him ranked 73 on his Top 100.
Posted by Diddy @ 9:08 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007
Yeah Louis, that Larry Allen guy had a horrible bench... :)
Posted by stephen ashworth @ 9:08 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007
rt prospect for sure. I still smell a julius trade brewing (two 08 first round picks...) would we make a run at assante samuel?
Posted by Kevin @ 9:09 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007
Agreed on the Michael Bush pick. He'll likely sit the bench this entire year due to his recent surgery, but why not stash the guy for the year since Julius won't be back after this year due to his contract.

I wonder if we should trade one of the 6th round or 7th round picks for Randy Moss...since it looks like all of the WRs are now gone. Definately a blockbuster move, and it would make headlines. That's what Jerry lives for!
Posted by Melonhead @ 9:23 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007
This is a JAG pick. Plus he's not from Texas, so he must stink.
Posted by Tom Cummins @ 9:27 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007
Another Jerry Jones draft another disaster. So mant potential choices and we leave the second round and get another stiff?
Posted by chris graham @ 9:45 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007
well next year should be good
Posted by _sturt_ @ 9:53 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007
Does this mean that Pat McQuistan isn't as popular in April 2007 as he was about six months ago?
That's the logical question that I didn't hear anyone at the press conference ask (... maybe some of you guys got a little drowsy and weren't on top of your game?)
Posted by JR @ 10:35 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007
So what if he's not a hall of famer, what do you expect to get at 67, or for that matter, the 2nd rounder we traded out of? Jonathan Ogden?
Posted by Robert @ 10:38 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007
Goose said, Goose need to watch fotball games and not guys in tights running around. Marten and his colleague Beekman are both excellent third round picks. Both are tough SOBs.
Posted by JTD @ 10:43 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007
Horrible pick. They had the best center who could play guard at their second round selection. This guy will never be a left tackle. This is more of a backup right tackle selection - why?
Posted by Ted @ 10:56 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007
Tom,
I agree with you, the obvious choice was DeMarcus Tyler. Why select a 4th string inactive project player in the 3rd round, with so much talent still on the board.
Posted by David K @ 10:59 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007
I could see Marten as a swing guy, backing up multiple spots along the line. Not a bad pick, although it might have been a little early. Everything I've read about Marten suggests he would be better suited to RT. McQuistan could still be in the plan at LT depending on how he progresses, and we'll have two first round picks next year. Cleveland's could end up being top 10, 15, so we could pick up a LT then if need be.

Looks like trader Jerry is back in control...Was Wade allowed in the warroom today? No WR's to address two 30-something starters, no insurance at safety. Jerry gets cute and drops out of the first round, then gets nervous and tosses away the picks to a conference rival. what a day...
Posted by Joe @ 11:18 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007
Do the Browns have blackmail pics of Jerry Jones???? Trade away our first round pick for 2008(does us no good now) then comes back in the first round to get a DE we don't need?? Then gives the Browns our 2nd rounder to get some lower draft pics and then gets an OT we don't need??? Jerry get a general manager that knows football, Bill Parcells should have been there to stop wheelin and deelin Jerry, but another yes man Wade Phillips just smiled and watched his season dump down the tube!!! Thanks Jerry for putting another loser on the field...Next year will be nice to have the Cowboys 1st rounder in the top 3 and the Browns 1st rounder in the top 20...5-11 here we come again...

such negatity
James Marten OT – who will eventually replace Flo
A hard-nosed, throw-back style blocker that will do whatever it takes to battle the guy lined up in front of him. He has the potential to start anywhere along the offensive line. Some evaluators believe he could be an above-average center if given the time to learn and develop at the position. He was able to handle quicker edge rushers for most of the season, and did so again during the Senior Bowl practices. He flashes a nasty streak, but he will get too tall off the snap and fails to re-adjust if beaten to the outside off the ball. He has long arms, but will drop his hands when blocking on the move. He is a well-prepared lineman that has the chance to play early in his career, which will get him drafted early.

The Cowboys are going to go into camp with a bunch of late round picks. So we'll probably have 3-4 out of 9 picks make the team. Yippeee! (sarcasm)
Posted by Ted @ 12:52 AM Sun, Apr 29, 2007
Squire, please!!!!! If Martin cannot start at RG then this is a wasted pick. As a OT, Martin is a project. Why draft a project in the 3rd round with the best center and 3rd best DT Tyler on the board? We already have a young prospect at OT.

It truly is mystifying how Dallas struggles in selecting offensive linemen.
It's no wonder the Cowboys had to waste millions on an underachiever like Leonard davis.
You keep 53, add your 6th round pick, trade up and select Justin Blalock.
Spencer: a solid B pick.
Marten: a no question C-.

re: 25 reps of 225lbs. A long-armed guy like him(6'7") is doing more work when benching than a 6' guy. Maybe, just maybe, 25 reps is not too uncommon for guys this tall in the draft.
That said, it's likely he'll have to put on muscle for the NFL game.

"Touchdown Cowboys!" That is what John Clayton from ESPN is saying about the Cowboys draft on day one. Read for yourself.
