More genius by Jerry

Trader Jerry is on fire! The Cowboys packaged a few picks together to move up to No. 26 and snag Purdue's Anthony Spencer.

The Cowboys gave up Clevend's second (36th overall) and their third and fifth to move up and snag a guy that can be DeMarcus Ware's pass-rushing partner for the next 8-10 years.

They sure gave up a lot for him. I hope he's worth it.

Posted by scott m @ 4:09 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

We basically gave up a 3rd and a 5th for a top 10 pick next year... I can live with it.

Posted by cms @ 4:09 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

I disagree. First, I think either Spencer or Houston would have been there at 36, so there was no point in trading that pic. Also, 3 picks to move up 10 spots!!!! And they weren't even 7th round pics (which we have a boat load). Arrrrg.

Posted by Brian @ 4:11 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Great pick up. Both first round OT's said Spencer was the toughest player they faced at DE. Cleveland is bad every year so that extra #1 next year is going to be huge.

Posted by austin @ 4:11 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Does this mean that carpenter is going to sit on the bench?

Posted by Greg in LA @ 4:12 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Wha....?!@? Move up to get a guy that was a 2nd round grader by most everyone? And something that ins't a need position? 4 defensive front 7 in the past 3 years? Isn't there another area that could use someu pgrades?

Posted by Lunging Wolf @ 4:12 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

With Spencer this defense could field 7 first round picks next year.

Newman
Williams
Spears
Ware
Carpenter
Spencer
Ellis

Oh yeah, and have two first round picks coming

Posted by RC @ 4:13 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Not a bad trade at all if this guy is who they wanted. They basically gave up a 3rd and a 5th and netted the Browns #1 next year. Jerry has done a very good job today so far.

Posted by mark @ 4:14 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

How can you be upset, they traded a 3 and a 5 for a 1st rounder next year. They needed to fill the role which they still did after effectively trading down. Im happy

Posted by Joseph c @ 4:15 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Ouch we gave a lot up for this guy.

Posted by existentist @ 4:16 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

I don't like the trade. There were plenty of good prospects available with their 2nd rounders.

Posted by DandyDan @ 4:16 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

What does this mean for Greg Ellis and Bobby Carpenter? Did the Boys make a mistake with Parcells' last first rounder? Net value of these two trades is that the Cowboys get a #1 next year from Cleveland to move down four spots, but give up their #3 & #5 this year (to Philly) for Anthony Spencer who will be converted to LB and played out of position on the left side. Training camp should be interesting!

Posted by Chester @ 4:16 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Great move getting Spencer! Now get Jarrett, and I'm a happy guy!

Posted by Kevin @ 4:19 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Great 1st trade by Jerry. But he should check to see if his wallet is gone after that 2nd one. Dumb move.

Posted by JohnG @ 4:19 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Spencer will be a great rusher for us for a long time.

Posted by dbk @ 4:20 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

I agree with Scott M and think the trade is good since they have Cleveland's next year #1...however, I do wonder when will they simply stay where they're at and pick the guys that come to them? Hopefully this won't bite them this year

Posted by Not So Crazy Ray @ 4:22 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

I'm assuming he'll translate to OLB in the 3-4, backing up and challenging Greg Ellis, depending on Ellis's health. This should also mean that Carpenter will play inside.

Posted by George @ 4:23 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Great move by Jerry. As Scott said 2 picks to get a top 10 pick next year. Spencer would be gone by the Patriots next pick and Houston will be long gone by the 36th. Spencer is a Merriman clone, 260lbs 31 reps of 225, great first step, watch out!

Posted by Gary @ 4:23 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

7th rounders mean nothing on draft day unless they turn into something other than projects...i don't like giving up a 3rd, but i believe jerry will try and get that one back to go after a receiver or corner...this begs the question, where will carpenter play now that spencer is an outside guy?...there was a thought just this week that he would be down or outside depending of course how ellis rehabs his injury

Posted by Art Gillis @ 4:23 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

I think jerry made a bad move. Spencer would have been there with the second pick from Houston. I would have selected branch or CB Houston. Then move Henry to Free Safety.

Posted by chris97330 @ 4:24 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Gotta agree with cms, like the pick but they probably could have gotten much better value, I think at 36, lost out on trade points, should not have had to give the # 5.

Posted by Tariq @ 4:26 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

How about an offensive (no pun intended) pick this year with our first pick, I really think that Meachem will come back to haunt us, he is a very talented reciever that has the potential to be an elite player, just hope Jarrett is available in the second round to be followed closely by Gonzalez.

Posted by Lannis Temple @ 4:28 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Shrewd. That is the pick Dallas probably would have made at 22 and if they hadnt moved up, New England at 28 probably would have taken him.

Posted by powrhaus @ 4:32 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

If you look at the NFL value charts, Jerry gave up 722.8 points in the 3 picks for a slot valued at 700 points. Kinda of expensive but I really like this Spencer kid.

Posted by Texas Pride @ 4:34 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

I also think they gave up too much to get back into the first round...it would be different if they had multiple picks in the 3rd and 5th rounds, but now they have no picks in either...we all know you get depth in these rounds, and Spencer may have been available at #36...I would ahev kept the picks and take the best available player at 36.

Posted by James Joyner @ 4:38 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

I agree that we overpaid, especially considering this isn't a position of need.

Rick Gosselin rated him 34th overall
Mel Kiper: 31st overall
Scout.com: 23rd Overall

This just didn't make sense.

Posted by Andreas @ 4:38 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

What????? How can you call him a genius a pick that would have still been there in the second and give up so much for him to boot. The man is lucky his daddy's money got him where he is in life because that was a bone head move.

Posted by Dave @ 4:41 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Have to look at it as a package deal. We got a first that should be higher than our own next year. That allows us to either get a wow person because the pick from Cleveland is so high or maybe you can package two firsts to get it. Great move by Jerry. By the way Spencer will be better players out of this draft, he got a lot of sacks in a conference that is not pass happy at all. Just my thoughts.

Posted by Mark @ 4:42 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

I applaud Jerry for once. I look at it as he got who he wanted in the first anyway, and basically traded a 3&5 for Clevelands #1 next year. I think anyone would have made that trade. I disagree that Spencer would have been there at 36. He is Mel's pick for defensive rookie of the year and placing him opposite Ware will terrorize qb's for years!

Posted by kevin @ 4:44 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

So we have another defensive end/lb ( you can only play 11 guys on defense right?-hmm, Ware, Spears, Ratliff, Canty, Ellis, Hatcher, Spencer...) a late round second, a late round forth, a sixth and a bunch of crapshoots in the seventh,

Spencer would have to be awfully, awfully good to merit this trade with Philly. Overall, I think if Cleveland has a good year next year, Dallas this will end up being a terrible draft, in a deep draft that could have helped them significantly. If Cleveland really stinks, it will be good. But the last time we did this we got Marcus Spears, who will now be likely on the bench, or traded for a 4th rounder.

We could have done better, much better.

Posted by Lum @ 4:46 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Man, this is a tough crowd. They got one of the players they wanted in this years first and they get a probable top 5 overall pick next year. Next year you will love this trade

Posted by Jared @ 4:46 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

essentially we traded a third and fifth round pick for a first round pick next year... and probably an early first round pick at that... i dont think we can complain too much about that... DOWN WITH THE BROWNS.

Posted by Keith Hoey @ 4:47 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Not quite sure how I feel about this trade. I absolutely loved the first deal, but this is questionable. I severely dislike how we only have one pick left today. Hopefully, we can deal Julius Jones for another first day pick?

Posted by Justin Neeley @ 4:49 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

This is anything but genius. This is sheer stupidity. This guy in all likelihood would have been available with their first selection in the second round. This would have only been "genius" if they would have selected Robert Meachem instead. But then again the Cowboys seem to have some unofficial policy about not drafting offense in the first round. Spencer will have a meidocre career in the league, mark it down.

Posted by mark @ 4:49 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

I think we needed a pressure player given the uncertainties with Ellis.

By the way, what we did amounted to this:

Traded Brady Quinn, a 3rd and a 5th for

Spencer and Clevelands #1 in 2008.

Depending on next years pick, this could be sweet.

Posted by Skid @ 4:50 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Great pick - on the road back to the Doomsday Defense. He should be able to instantly play in Phillips Defense, and will allow for Spears, Ware, Ellis, Carpenter to benefit from an outstanding pass rusher.

Posted by Raul @ 4:51 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

I loved the first trade. But there were too many people still on the board that were available that we likely could have gotten with the 36th pick. Spencer, Chris Houston, Dwayne Jarrett, Alan Branch, Arron Sears. I hope Jerry finds a way to get a third round pick back this year. Altogether though, I think the benefit of the first trade will outweigh the negatives of the second trade.

Posted by Paul @ 4:54 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Even if Spencer turns out to be a bust, it is still a great trade because we essentially moved down 4 spots for a extra 1st round pick, and it's not like we traded for New Englands pick, we've got the CLEVELAND BROWNS!!! I'm pretty sure Brady Quinn and Joe Thomas aren't going to pull a New Orleans and be in the confenerence championship. Maybe in the future, but as far as 2008 goes, we most likely are getting a top 10 pick. Please dont trade this 1st rounder Jerry!

Posted by Cowboy Mike @ 4:55 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

WHAT??

We trade out of the first round and get a first next year (a push) and get the 36th pick in the second.

We trade that pick, the 87th and the159th to end up 4 picks behind our original 1st round pick!!!

Posted by Frank Colonna @ 4:55 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

I liked trading out of the 1st round, I don't like the move to trade back up. When I saw they gave up a 2nd, I was thinking it was going to be the pick in the 50's, not #36. #36, a third and a fift is too much to move up 10 spots. They would have been better off staying at 36 where they could probably get Houston and than take a WR with the pick in the 50's.

Posted by brad @ 4:55 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Jerry is more interested in making deals than the consequences. I too hope he pans out, but the fact that they are drafting another lineman/linebacker is an indicator they have missed on that position like a 1000 times since Johnson left.

Posted by Mark @ 4:58 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Same here, I believe Spencer would have been their at #36!

Carpenter showed signs of a real player against Seattle at OLB. Now they move Carp inside?

Hmmm......

Posted by Lance @ 5:01 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Giving up a 3rd and a 5th to move up 10 spots isn't really a high price at all. Cleveland just gave up a #1 in 2008 to move up 14 spots ya know. Now THAT was giving up a lot.

Posted by William @ 5:08 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

I think this was the perfect choice. The DE's last year failed to do enough to shrink the field. Shrinking the field will help the defensive backs. This will put pressure on the present DE's to perform better or else and will provide an adequate backup or tandem with DeMarcus Ware at OLB. This will also allow the Cowboys to use Carpenter at both OLB and MLB. Using whats his name, a late round DE (what is his name?) at Defensive tackle is also a possibility now. The Cowboys are deep!

Posted by JohnG @ 5:16 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

How would you know Spencer will be there at #36 ?. Have you seen he plays ?. Don't be too greedy. Deal with the Browns is a really good one. Spencer will be a good rusher for us.

Posted by Cowboy Mike @ 5:24 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

For what most considered a 2nd rounder, we gave up a 2nd, 3rd and 5th. I can live with the Cleveland trade, it's the Philly trade that will come back on us.

Posted by bronco 18 @ 5:24 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

if u have a chan:ce would u draft dwayne jarrent

Posted by Gary M @ 5:52 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

nice job eagles...you select a qb who most think is overrated with the pick we traded you...suuweeeet!

Posted by clark @ 5:59 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Not wild about blowing 3 picks to move back up into the first when plenty of talent would have still been on the board. when will trader jerry learn he's not jimmy?

Posted by David @ 6:05 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

How can you criticize this deal? When the day started, did you think Dallas would end up with this year's first round pick and next year's? A first round pick from perrianal bottom five Cleveland who will apparently be starting a rookie QB next year? The same QB you didn't want and steal managed to parlay into a first round pick next year despite the fact nobody would pick him over Vince Young, Matt Leinart, or Jay Cutler. And this year's first round pick -Spencer? Your talking about a guy who was a Big Ten defensive force and a perfect fit for Dallas' defense. In case you guys forgot, Dallas couldn't stop anyone from converting 3rd downs or throwing deep bombs at will. I'm with Jones and Phillips on this one - an effective pass rush makes the whole defense better. Take all the "shut-down" corners you want, but if you can't put pressure on the QB you can't stop your opponents'.

Posted by Young @ 6:31 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

I'm on board with both trades. I don't think Spencer is there at 36. I think we did give up a 5th rounder more than I would like, but that's the cost of moving up to get the guy you want. We needed another pressure player and he can contribute this year. Having said all that, I would have also been OK with waiting at 36 and picking the BPA.

Posted by Brian @ 9:53 AM Sun, Apr 29, 2007

HA HA HA HA....E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!!!! Only the fool who took Terrell Owens could give up 3 picks to a division rival. Looks like we'll continue our domination of the 'boys for the next few years.
