Anthony Spencer was incredibly active as a defensive end at Purdue, making 93 tackles and 26 tackles for losses last season. He'll play outside linebacker in Wade Phillips' 3-4 scheme. Phillips didn't have to think back far to come up with a player similar to the 6-3, 260-pound Spencer. Chargers LB Shaun Phillips (6-3, 262) is a former Purdue DE who did just fine in Wade Phillips' scheme. Shaun Phillips, who the Cowboys coach says isn't as strong as Spencer, had 11.5 sacks last season. S. Phillips is the complement to Shawne Merriman that the Cowboys believe Spencer will become to DeMarcus Ware. "Those kind of guys make the transition real well," Phillips said. |

This is a great pick, specially since we don't know how Ellis is going to look after the injury... Dallas doesn't have a #49 on their roster so he could keep his college number.

I don't doubt that Spencer can turn into a good player. They gave up too much to move up 10 spots. There is a good possibility that they could have gotten him at 36. If not maybe a Dwayne Jarrett, Chris Houston, or Alan Branch. All 3 play positions of far greater need, especially Branch. If Ferguson gets hurt, the D is in big trouble.

Would you be happier giving up our 1st next year and 4th? That's what the Niners gave New England (Who would have taken Spencer) to get back in the 1st. This draft has been genius!

Agreed that it's a good pick, but Frank has a good point on waiting the 10 spots. A cool idea with the number Fidel, but the NFL won't allow a #49 on a DE. Check the Wikipedia entry on the rule. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Football_League#Uniform_numbers)

Cleveland has murderous schedule next year, top 10 pick in the bag. How can we get back a #3 later on today? Only negative of all the trades..Spencer is solid playmaker, who gets into backfield..
