Spencer's name was on card before trade

9:45 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007 |
Tim MacMahon   E-mail   News tips

The Cowboys were prepared to take Anthony Spencer at No. 22 if they couldn't work out a deal with Cleveland.

Jerry said the Cowboys' rep in New York had Spencer's name written on a card and was ready to turn it in.

The Cowboys had their eyes on several receivers in the second and might not have made the second trade with the Browns if Dwayne Jarrett, Sidney Rice or Steve Smith were still on the board. But Jerry, noting that there are several promising young receivers on the roster, said he wouldn't lose sleep because the Cowboys didn't land a WR on the draft's first day.

I don't want to overstate their value, but we've been given a lot of reason to feel encouraged about Hurd, Miles, and possibly Rector. I was always skeptical that WR was going to be the priority that many mock drafters were making it.

Put me in the camp that is more worried about our options behind Ferguson. That's a time bomb situation that could play havoc with our 2007 defense much in the way that not having a player similar to Ellis blew up our 2006 defense when he went down. But it appears that's not going to get solved in the draft. Perhaps there'll be some June cuts and perhaps we'll have the cap room to do something significant then. Perhaps.

So the cowboys did great you old whiners
Your 1st is relatively unaffected
Your 2nd turns into next years top 5
Your 3rd moves to the top of the round
Your 4th stays the same
Your 5th turns into the browns 4th
Your 6th moves up to the Browns 6th

Sweet!

Jerry says we have several promising WRs on the roster? WHO please!? If they were, why was every draft site/expert/NFL commentator saying the 'Boys needed a WR? Again stupid jerry waste money on a position for which we have spent TONS of money! $8MM signing bonus to Bradie James, two 1st round picks (Ware & Carpenter) already on the roster and $5MM signing bonus to Adele! Plus we still have Greg Ellis coming back!

So, do we affectionatly dub him Mr. T?

Posted by pdiezel @ 10:27 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

All in all a decent first day. I like the Spencer pick. I hate the fact they had to trade back up to get him, but in the end Dallas has two first rounders next year and that gives them a lot to work with. The team managed to get the guy they want and the all time best 3-4 defenses have had monsters at both OLB positions. Ellis is getting older and Carpenter will be solid, but not the answer to a Super Bowl defense.

Does anyone know anything about Ryan Smith, CB out of Florida? I have researched him a little bit and it seems as though he might be a good fit to take Aaron Glenn's place in the lineup. Let me hear your comments.

Seems like Wade Phillips is trying to get a Shawn Merriman/Shawn Phillips combo going. I hope it works.

So this basically proves that we gave up a 3rd and 5th to drop 2 spots and gain a possible top 5/10 pick in next year's draft. Not a bad deal, Jerr.

What is the saying? Luck is the product of the meeting of preparation and opportunity. That was so true today. Fans in Dallas don't give Jones the respect he deserves for being unafraid to embrace opportunities like today's. Most teams have GMs and owners who are too afraid to make a move when an opportunity presents itself. Jones immediately understood the opportunity he had and wasn't afraid to make deals. He managed to get the same people he would have gotten anyway but also pulled down a first round pick next season. That's some good work and the Dallas fans ought to be glad our owner will make those kind of moves to improve the team.

Is that what you call scramblin’ for par??

Posted by ryan @ 11:33 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

We need to pick Tanard Jackson, CB, with our next pick. He seems to have the most value at a need position. Could contribute.

Posted by pdiezel @ 11:42 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

None of the receivers in this draft except Calvin Johnson distinguished themselves from any other average draft. I do not see why people keep bringing up WR. Dallas at the this point has the potential to trade up and take anyone they want next year. I will take that over a 1st round reach on Ted Ginn or any other receiver that will still have to learn what it is like to man up against NFL corners and safeties play after play. The guys they wanted to pick didn't make it through the second, so what. We can live with what we have. I only hope to see a few DB's and a plugger at NT tomorrow.

How about Michael Bush with our first pick on Sunday?

Posted by Greg @ 11:46 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

Somebody, please bring back Bill!

I'd love to see the Cowboys take Louisville RB Michael Bush tomorrow in the 4th. I'd also like to see them grab Boise St. QB Jared Zabransky in the late rounds.

Good first day Jerry!

Jerry and company did an excellent job today. Without knowing what kind of football shape Greg Ellis is going to be in...it makes the Spencer pick make a lot of sense. I think the Giants showed last year that you can never have enough pass rushers. McFadden '08!!!!

Here's to the 0-16 Browns!!!!!!!

Posted by Keith @ 11:59 PM Sat, Apr 28, 2007

I think Jerry did a great job today. All of it depends on how Spencer turns out, of course, but the trades were brilliant. He put the Cowboys in the best position he possibly could.

I love it. You'd have a hard time convincing me that any of the receivers available at 22 would have made a bigger impact than Crayton can at the 3rd wideout spot this year. A better rush makes everyone behind it better. Top it off with the fact that you now have the ammo to trade up for any prospect you want in the 08 draft and I'm a happy camper. Now get Utah's Soliai in the 4th to spell Ferguson....

Cowboy Mike, you and some others on this blog hate Jerry, hate MacMahon, hate the cowboys. How about you view things through a clear lens for once and not just spit out your bile about how life isn't fair? The fact is, we have an owner that is willing to do anything to return this franchise to glory. He is a risk taker. The risks he took today are greatly outweighed by the rewards of a first round pick.

Posted by Timothy @ 12:58 AM Sun, Apr 29, 2007

Someone show me these promising receivers, because I must have been watching a different team the past 17 games.

I like the Anthony Spencer pick, you absolutely have to put pressure on the quarterback and Spencer was long gone before 36 came.

But, this is what you have at the receiver position: an aging Terry Glenn, an unproductive Terrel Owens, a decent third receiver in Patrick Crayton and several average players filling out the unit.

Dallas needed to stay at 53 and upgrade that position.

Posted by JTD @ 7:08 AM Sun, Apr 29, 2007

I like Spencer. He gives a pash rush that will make the secondary look good. Don't like the second pick at all. You get projects in lower rounds. With that said, if they pick Tanard Jackson and Saliai in the fourth today, they are in great shape. I don't see any WR's that will make any impact on this team for a long time.

Posted by John F @ 7:13 AM Sun, Apr 29, 2007

Like the moves made. Great to have two first rounders in 08...but feel Quinn would have been a great pick. Reason? If Romo turns bad who's left? Brad Johnson?...he will be 50. Quinn could have been ready to go by year three. Time will tell if this was a good move.

Dallas picks in less than two hours. How about posting some names that we should be looking for Dallas to draft in the 4th?

Posted by Steven @ 8:57 AM Sun, Apr 29, 2007

To all the people who argue that we have Greg Ellis coming back remember, he is 32 years old and coming off an Achilles injury. That is a tough injury for alot of young guys to come back from much less a guy getting older by the second. If we have Ware and Spencer bookending our 3-4 for the next decade we will be more than fine.

As for the WR position, the only way I thought we were going to take a WR was if one was there in the first or second round we wanted. It is not a "need" position for this team. But all those were gone so I think the 'Boys are very content to go with the guys we already have. Next year we will have 2 #1s and should probably use one on a WR.

Posted by dteowner @ 9:13 AM Sun, Apr 29, 2007

Being a fan of Purdue, I'm happy with the team getting Spencer. That said, I'm wondering where all these guys are going to play. You're not going to sit Ware. Between Ellis, Carpenter, and Spencer, pick 2 to watch from the sideline each play. Seems like a waste of talent. Unless they've got plans to move Carpenter inside or know something about Ellis that runs contrary to all reports, I wonder if we would have been better off with Branch.
