First-round pick Anthony Spencer, who worked with the first-string defense this morning, said he's loving the possibility of being a starter. "I'm looking forward to a little competition," said Spencer, who dropped back in coverage some his first three seasons at Purdue. Greg Ellis, the injured, incumbent starter at that outside linebacker spot, worked out on the side. He did a bunch of agility drills and worked with one of those big, ol' bungee cord thingees for a while. Ellis looks sleek and showed no sign of a limp. Wade Phillips said he expects Ellis to be ready to roll by training camp, if not a bit before. And the starting job is Ellis' to lose when he gets healthy. "He's our starting outside backer," Phillips said. "Everybody saw last year what happened when he wasn't there. He can be a dominant player." |

I know Ellis is a worry wart and all that and a good guy in spite of his fussing, but it comes to mind if anyone should have been upset with the drafting of Spencer, I should have been Bobby Carpenter, yet nary a word from him. I think he deserves a little praise for demonstrating at least publically that he is a team player.

The only reason Ellis is working as hard as he is, is because of the drafting of Spencer. Had they drafted another position with that 1st pick, I'm pretty certain Ellis would have come to camp 20 pounds over weight.
Ellis should worry about his position!

That's what I like to see: A very cocky first draft player being competitive, and a veteran looking mean and sharp to get his position back.

I really dont care whose feelings are hurt, we need a consistent pass rush from both ends. How did spencer look rushing the passer? thats what I want to know. Everybody in the big ten was saying he was the toughest to block, I hope that translates to the next level.

Heck Larry, why would a veteran or a 1st-year professional pout or whine about a management decision to improve the team? All either can do is compete and perform to the best of their ability and let the chips fall where they will. The notion that they are entitled to be disruptive is a page out of the selfish and non-productive Terrell Owens Autobiography. Spencer, with his perfect comment, and the silent Carpenter are demonstrating maturity and intelligence.

It's good to hear that a rookie is looking forward to competiton because that means he's a motivated player and has confidence in his skills. If Greg Ellis just stays healthy the duration of the season everything will fall into place for him. We have a good situation so far.
