That's the opinion of DMN Metro columnist Steve Blow, who thinks Jerry's trip to Lubbock to try to woo Texas Tech officials to JerryWorld is a low-down move. Jerry did pretty much spit on the Cotton Bowl, boarding his fancy plane after word broke that Tech and Oklahoma State were on the verge of finalizing a deal to move its series to Fair Park. Cowboys PR types released this spin statement from Jerry: "The purpose of bringing the country's finest new stadium to North Texas is to continue to provide a home for the very best college and high school football games to go along with the Dallas Cowboys and the NFL. "The viability of a venue that can host these types of events creates business and economic benefits that will reach across Dallas, Arlington, Fort Worth and all of the neighboring communities." I'm not going to pick sides in the Cotton Bowl-JerryWorld squabble. My focus is on a much more important cause: shaming cheap Jerry into turning on the Jumbotrons for high school football games at his facilities. |

BRAVO!!!! Go get'em Jerry, get every major event from not only the cotton bowl, but Airlines arena, get all the football games, all the high school championship games, all the concerts, NCAA basketball final four, evrything to can jam in the new stadium including, get Roger Staubach to help sway the Notre Dame/Navy game to the new stadium, I bet NBC would love to have that on their schedule, Make Laura Miller and the rest of her short sighted gang of thugs, suffer for years to come, you live by the sword, you die by that sword. They had a chance to have the new stadium in Dallas, but they snubbed their noses, so go get them Jerry!!!!!

I think it's ridiculous for those who want to blame Jerry for not moving the team to Dallas and I think it's just as ridiculous for Steve Blow and Ms. Miller to think Jerry over stepped his boundaries to elicit business for his new stadium. It's a business people and Miller is the one who screwed up the whole ordeal of getting the Cowboys. What does Dallas have going for itself? In fact it's in the best interest of Tech and OSU to get the best deal. Miller needs to concentrate on her own business rather than someone else's!

This wouldnt be such a big deal if the new stadium was in Dallas. 20/20 hindsight

I agree with the other posters. The city of Dallas had their chance and blew it. As a Tech Alum I would love to see a Dallas game every year, but honestly I could careless what stadium it is at.

couldn't agree more with derrick and mike -- it's time for laura miller to stop whining and sleep in the bed she made for herself. she blew a great opportunity for the city of dallas.
how 'bout a laura miller bobblehead night at jerryworld? it might be the first time in bobblehead history the bobbling head was stuck up the doll's own butt...

You know I am still pissed at Jerry getting Tom Landry out the way he did. But, blaming Jerry for all this is bull, the city government of Dallas made the decision to let the Cowboys new home be in Arlington and they also have let the Cotton Bowl fall into such ruins! At least at the new stadium more than 5 toilets will be able to be flushed at the same time!

Awwww boohooo for Dallas. Lemme break out my violin as we all feel sorry for the idiots that had every opportunity to do what was best for their city and screwed it up. These short-sighted idiots need to stop blaming Jerry. What did they think was going to happen? That there was going to be a high-profile nearly 100k seat stadium just down the road a bit and it wasn't going to be stealing events from the outdated stadiums in Dallas?
Sorry but it's called progress. I bet Ms. Miller still has a VCR and then wants to cry like a baby because Blockbuster no longer carries VCR cassettes.

"Spit on the Cotton Bowl"??? That dump has been a spitoon for years -- and I know since I've been going to football games there since the early 60's. It was the government of the City of Dallas that began this "spitting" contest under the "leadership" (and I use that word lightly) of Mayor Miller. Blame Laura Miller and her cohorts for the demise of the Cotton Bowl and Fair Park. She was the one who started this "spitting contest."

I am a fan of the Dallas Cowboys, not a fan of Dallas. Jerry needs to do everything in his power to make sure the team and its stadium are top notch. If the Cotton Bowl fades away, so be it. It is not the least bit important. Remember, although Dallas is in the name this is America's team. Go get 'em Jerry.

Good choice, Tim. Jerry is a very aggressive businessman. That's how our country was built on: entrepreneurism. He has vision with anything less than successful, is unacceptable. Laura Miller isn't that bright, visionary, or quick to learn. She has failed Dallas, and losing the Cowboys to Arlington, will be one of her many loses. I applaud Jerry and his family to take the bull by the horns and yank. GO COWBOYS!!!
Posted by Buddy @ 12:29 PM Thu, May 10, 2007
Bravo to Jerry for trying to attract the top events to his new stadium.
The City of Dallas has no one to blame but themselves.
Posted by 5xSuper @ 12:32 PM Thu, May 10, 2007
Quite whining. Miller did this to the city of Dallas not Jerry Jones. She had the option of having this "one of a kind venue," in Dallas. She and her cronies turned their backs on Mr. Jones, the Dallas Cowboys, and the community. Jerry is going to take care of himself and the city that took care of the Cowboys. "Business is business." You had your shot and blew it. Now; "NO SOUP FOR YOU!"
Posted by Chad @ 12:47 PM Thu, May 10, 2007
I don't get it. Why is Jerry a weasel when it comes to this game? Miller is the failure here and she should just put together a better package for Tech/OSU, or hire someone who knows something about sports as a business.
It shouldn't be hard to beat out Jerry World if the City pitches to what the game is really all about here and what both teams wanted by moving the game. They both want exposure, and there is more local exposure during the State Fair than in in Arlington.
Alas though, it seems Miller is more concerned with what she sees as shadowy companies trying to sell their product to her clients. What was she before Mayor again?

This is Jerry doing what he does best - the business side. Unless there is a contract or even a verbal agreement to not compete for events, I don't see that Jerry did anything wrong or out of integrity.
A silly question - why is the Cotton Bowl still vertical? Other than stadiums on college campuses which don't need luxury boxes or modern amenties, I can't think of any old stadiums that are still being used.
As a side note, I seem to remember as a kid in the early '70s that there was a stadium or arena around where Reunion Arena was later built. Am I wrong?
Posted by Patrick in Austin @ 1:10 PM Thu, May 10, 2007
Right?!? Looks like I'm not the only one that's asking, "so what's your point?"
Posted by ernest t bass @ 1:11 PM Thu, May 10, 2007
Steve Blow, normally the Casper Milquetoast of banal general news reporting, actually took a page from cheapshot artist Tim MacMahon yesterday and called Jones "Freak Face". Yet, Blow refers to himself as a Journalist during infrequent breaks from smelling himself via print. Shameful.
Posted by ernest t bass @ 1:57 PM Thu, May 10, 2007
Dave, P.C. Cobb Stadium stood near American Airlines Center until about that time. Don't recall any stadium near Reunion Arena.

For some strange reason I don't think the city of Dallas or Laura Miller would take Jerry's feelings into consideration if the shoe were on the other foot...call me skeptical

MY HATS OFF TO THE BLOG POSTERS!
Its damn good to see everyone sees thru all the Dallas Crap. Jerry can not be held responsible for the Pitiful situation in Dallas and the Disfunctional City Council. He is a businessman and he is going to go after the business. The more business he can attract, the less our tickets will cost. Go Get um' Jerry!!
Posted by Dave @ 3:28 PM Thu, May 10, 2007
Thanks earnest t bass. I just remember goin on I-30 and seeing a stadium out the car window around downtown.

I was also quite disappointed in reading Steve Blow's "Freak Face" blurt.
That's WAY too playground!
Posted by Chad @ 3:54 PM Thu, May 10, 2007
Dave, pure curiosity type question here, but what if Tech/OSU had a contract with the Cotton Bowl? What would Jerry had done wrong? You could argue the colleges would be in the wrong if they switched venues, but it still would not be wrong to talk to the Cowboys with regards to the game.
Businesses do this all the time. They try to steal other companies' clients by offering a better package. It's just business as usual, and it seems to me that Miller is concerned that another company has a better package than the City of Dallas can offer, therefore she is lashing out rather than making their offer more competitive.

Here's the e-mail I sent to Steve Blow:
Bidness is bidness - And if Mayor Laura “No” Miller had any leadership skills, the Cowboys new stadium would be in Dallas. Until a contract deal is reached with Tech and State, competition is still part of free enterprise. Mr. Jones has a responsibility to the City of Arlington that stepped up to the blue tees and helped fund the new stadium to ensure enough events are scheduled to provide a return on investment. The City of Dallas has already shown its colors when it started demanding what events it would host during Super Bowl week, if awarded to this area. If you really want to “see a little more Dallas in the Dallas Cowboys”, direct your “weasel” comments to the Mayor and City Council of Dallas.
Posted by Anthony @ 4:26 PM Thu, May 10, 2007
How in the world do you let the building of a new stadium leave Dallas? In this city that should've been legit grounds for impeachment! Laura Miller wanted to play hard ball and lost...Jerry is doing what he should do, and thats crush everyone who opposed him on this because it could've been a win-win for all parties. Laura Miller screwed the city of Dallas for 30 to 40 years. Jerry should be Mayor, simply cause he has good sense, at least about economics that'll help the city.
Posted by Dee @ 5:05 PM Thu, May 10, 2007
Jerry should think about renaming the Dallas Cowboys to the Arlington Cowboys. It doesn't sound as good, but it would be a real slap in the face to Laura Miller and the ignorant Dallas "leaders".
Posted by kgb @ 8:48 PM Thu, May 10, 2007
Aw hell- let's move the State Fair to Arlington and really make them mad!
Posted by larry @ 8:55 PM Thu, May 10, 2007
Nice email Long Ball. Nice email.

Laura Miller should quit whining and recognize that she created a competitor by not helping the Cowboys come to Dallas.
Posted by Dave @ 4:26 PM Fri, May 11, 2007
Chad, sorry I wasn't clear. When I said a handshake agreement to not compete, I meant between Jerry and the Cotton Bowl to pursue certain events.
For example, I worked for an engineering firm doing projects at chemical plants and often there would be an agreement between the engineering firm and the refinery to not hire each others' employees during the project or for a period of time afterwards.

Is the Ron Springs everyone is feeling sorry for
the same Ron Springs who was cut by teams in the
NFL (including the Cowboys) because he was a dopehead. Then he went out on the east coast and
robbed his mother of her life's savings in Florida, returned to N. Texas and was arrested for
having stolen an IBM Selectric typewriter from the
Texas Employment Agency in Richardson, TX. I'm
sorry, guys but feeling sorry for this guy makes as much sense as feeling sorry for O.J.
