New face at nickel LB

9:13 PM Sun, May 13, 2007 |
Tim MacMahon   E-mail   News tips

Let me preface this by saying nothing that happens during minicamp is permanent. This is the time to toy around with things.

And the Cowboys unveiled an interesting experiment during this afternoon's practice. Roy Williams lined up at linebacker in the nickel package.

Patrick Watkins and Ken Hamlin were the safeties, and Kevin Burnett was the linebacker next to Williams. As usual, Terence Newman, Anthony Henry and Aaron Glenn were the corners and nickel back.

Williams isn't big enough to be a full-time linebacker, but putting him there in nickel packages makes a lot of sense. It eliminates his biggest weakness -- covering the deep ball -- while putting him in position to wreak havoc as a blitzer.

See the above YouTube of the play known as The Play in Oklahoma for evidence of Williams' potential as a blitzer.

We'll be sure to ask Wade Phillips, who didn't address the media today, about this possibility during his press conference tomorrow.

Roy william could be a great linebacker in the mold of Brian Ularcher with Chicago. I wish coaches have thought about this earlier last year before we committed big money in free agency and high draft picks in Akin and Bobby Carpenter.

Man, this is exciting stuff. Phillips said he wanted to get the best players in a position to succeed and this sounds great. Also in this 4-2-5 nickle defense there was Ware and Spencer at the ends and Canty and Ratliff at tackle, with Ellis to replace Canty when healthy. This sounds super as in super bowl to me.

I think they call it scheming and not replicating as in trying to replicate the Giants of the 80's, that crazy ole' man.

Posted by Robert @ 10:48 PM Sun, May 13, 2007

LOL. Too funny. Can someone make up their mind on how many guys are blitzing this year. Ware, Spencer, Williams .... anyone gonna cover?

First time I see a guard blow-up Williams on a Third and Ten draw will be the last time we see that formation.

Like building a house around a defective water heater you spent way too much money on.

Posted by DougO @ 10:48 PM Sun, May 13, 2007

Williams is not an every down LB in the NFL, or anywhere else, but this potential move makes too much sense not to give it a try. Too bad nobody thought of it before...at least nobody that really mattered.

Posted by mike stevens @ 11:33 PM Sun, May 13, 2007

First a gaurd has to hit Williams.....they could and probably would miss most of the time because of the ability to slip away beside like a bull fighter

Second, how much lighter is Williams than Dexter Coakley? Seems to me he was in the 230lb range too so what's the difference? I know this much. Jimmy Johnson always had some smaller fast LBs (Darren Smith for example0 that could cover a great range side to side in the middle and that could also tackle well. I see Roy Williams being just as good at tackling and better at hitting. The key for me is them having some penetration by the guys up front to disrupt the design of the play. After that its just a matter of getting through traffic to make the stop before a long gain (idf its a run) because after all if your in a nickle its because its third and long. The goal is to stop the progress before a first down and with the large LBs Parcells liked to use we lost the ability to be fast and cover well at the LB position. Even Roy Williams can cover better than Bradey James.

Dear Mike, Roy Williams (if you forgot to watch) all to frequently gives up his body WITHOUT trying to shed a block when the play is coming at him at the LOS. Guess what happens as a MLB? Roy as a MLB is ridiculous unless it is 3rd and 25.

Dexter was an OLB. Talk to me about Roy as 4-3 WOLB in a Tampa 2 and maybe .....

Posted by Steven @ 11:46 PM Sun, May 13, 2007

Its almost getting repetitive Robert but you really don't know what you are talking about. Thats what is supposed to happen on defense. No one is supposed to know who or how many people are blitzing. Are they rushing 4 or bringing 7? Is one of the LBs coming or maybe a safety? Heaven forbid we bring a corner blitz.

Maybe we should get a board and draw it out for you. You must be a visual learner.

Seriously...why do the editors let Robert keep speaking...We all know you are an Eagle fan Robert...so please chill out with the dumb comments you continue to make...!

Tim (or wannabe T-Mac) you have got to be kidding me that the Sooner Nation call that "The Play". They can not really be that unimaginative or else you're just lazy and didn't do any research into what it's called in Sooner circles. The Play? For a team that has 7 national championships and the most wins in the NCAA history I somehow doubt that they call that "The Play". That would be like a Cowboys fan asking another Cowboys fan "Man, The Play was the greatest in Cowboys history". You wouldn't have a freakin clue which of the hundreds and hundreds of terrific plays that guy was talking about...the 99 yard run, the many hail mary's, sacking Bob Griese for a 30 yard loss or whatever, Emmitt Smith's 1st carry of the season against the Giants going 70some yards, Alvin Harper's slant, Deion Sander's bomb reception in Superbowl XXX that kickstarted the offense, etc etc etc.

Personally, I always thought they called it "The Dive".

Does anyone know if the staff has asked Big Roy to lose about 10 lbs or not? I know he loves to hit, but in my mind, he would be more effective at safety or ILB in the nickel if he was a little quicker and agile in changing direction.

Posted by SweetJimmy @ 4:11 AM Mon, May 14, 2007

I don't think Roy is an everydown LB in the NFL-- but I have been calling for him to play MLB in the nickle FOREVER. If you go back and watch the Sooners 2000 Nat'l Championship-- you will see that he spent as much time at MLB in the nickle- as he did as a safety. I think it is a brilliant move.

Remember how the early 90's Cowboys would use Bill Bates as the MLB in many nickle packages-- well this is similar-- but Roy is a much better athlete than Bates (no offense Bates- you played with a huge heart)

But let Roy blitz from the MLB in the nickle-- or let him roam the shallow middle of the field and take heads off---- as long as Roy is moving towards the line of scrimmage- he is a special player!

Go Cowboys--- and Boomer Sooner!

Posted by Robert @ 7:54 AM Mon, May 14, 2007

Steven, you provided an ad hominem attack and then proceeded to describe a blitz. Not sure what you intent was other than to type.

Maurice, the editors let me post because I write logical arguments. Not, one-sided "just blitz" and we win arguments favored by the "hate Bill Parcells" crowd infesting this fauna.

Posted by Nate @ 9:36 AM Mon, May 14, 2007

Saint Jimmy,

As a lifelong Sooner fan, I must attest that we do call this 'The Play'. If you can't see why, you didn't watch it closely. It is where Roy gets the nickname 'Superman' from. Not only does he literally fly into Chris Simms, he hits the ball hand and forces an interception which allows Teddy Lehman to score a TD. Consequently, this is what sealed the deal in the 2001 Red River Shootout. We ended up losing to two Ag schools (and hence got forced out of Big XII and National title contention), but this play will be remembered forever. There are many great plays in Sooner history, but only one is known as 'The Play'.

Check out this website for more of our unimaginitive 'The' plays:

ROBERT, you are truly a jerk. You think you post "logical arguments". If your arguments are logical and thought out, why are they always negative. Do you see no good ANYWHERE in the cowboys organization or squad. No, I'm sorry my man. You are just a big ball of cowboy hate, you are not a cowboy fan, and you just take up space on the blog. Go to the phili blog and spare us all your crap. It buys you nothing here.

Roy Williams playing LB in the nickel was a move I was screaming for Parcells to do last year because by now everyone knows Bradie James was struggling in coverage, so why wasn't Roy moved to that position? This move further shows me that Bill wasn't on his game last year and I'm glad to see Wade around just like the players. This move should enhance our coverage and speed on third downs; which, was a problem last year.

Posted by Fauna Infestation @ 12:20 PM Mon, May 14, 2007

Maureen...It is SO refreshing and exciting to NOT have the TunaMelt around. Perhaps now our excellent players can excel rather than be put in unfavorable positions. No more getting by on his past or bringing in NY retreads!
It's Texas Time...finally!

Posted by Robert @ 12:34 PM Mon, May 14, 2007

Oh Larry, I love you too. I am just not the type to call an experiment a success just because I ran it. Same holds for these "Roy Rescue Plans" and all this "We need a more exciting D" noise.

Our D's problem was not excitement -- it was bad coverage by Williams and James giving up huge first downs and touchdowns.

Our O's problem was not more deep balls by Romo -- it was players making big mental mistakes to kill drives and give away points.

All this other stuff is just that. Stuff.

Posted by Saint Jimmy @ 12:57 PM Mon, May 14, 2007

Nate, I remember the play all too well. It was the play that was the beginning of the end for me backing Chris Simms. But still blows my mind that it's simply called "The Play". The Dive, UpUpnAway, Hot Potato, or something would have been a better name for it.

Posted by clickclak @ 1:47 PM Mon, May 14, 2007

Dear Robert,

In unigue blitzing schemes (The best ones) you have many threats of blitzing, including ones people don't think would blitz. That way the QB has to respect every player on the field. And yes it was already stated there will be cover pakages,(Including some 2 gapping) by adding roy into the nickel pakages its just another way to confuse Offensives. Watch last years Chargers and patriots games, very good blitzing, even confused the great peyton manning in the Patriots Vs. Colts game.

Posted by Robert @ 2:42 PM Mon, May 14, 2007

Ummm, clikclak may I ask what ha-ha happin to the Chargers at home versus an old Patriots team last year?

Blitzing is vastly over-rated as a form of playing good Defense. Now, whether we could be more creative or less is fine to discuss.....

Still however does not solve our basic problem on D. Roy and Bradie can't cover and give up HUGE plays to secondary receivers.

Posted by David @ 3:05 PM Mon, May 14, 2007

You paint with a broad stroke Robert. D. Roy can't cover. D. Roy will get blown up by the offensive linemen. As far as covering goes we all know Roy has troubles covering deep. He does pretty well covering short routes and he does really well if the WR is in front of him when the ball is thrown. If we can keep him from covering deep we will be fine. I have watched Roy a ton and rarely have I seen him get blown up by an olineman. He usually avoids them or in some cases blows them up or shrugs them off as he makes the tackle.

Posted by Robert @ 3:22 PM Mon, May 14, 2007

So let me see David, a new HC comes in and all of a sudden all of our problems are gone because he will scheme it away with his coordinators.

And I paint with a broad brush?

On Roy getting blown up ... Roy goes not know how to shed blocks it just so happens when it is a 330lbs Guard he gets blown up instead of neutralized.

Roy Williams is the single most over rated players in the NFL barn none. He goes to the Pro-Bowl when he should be on the unemployment line.

Talk about living off your college rep.

They kept oe of the best Quarterbacks contained.

Score:
24 - 21, Brady is fine with blitzing, he usually calms down and throws but the chargers defence was confusing to him, most of the time he looked "uneasy in the pocket". Maybe because it collasped too fast for him to read the defence. But it being called overrated could be true, but both defences have their weaknesses. (Aggressive Vs. Non Aggressive) As for coverage problems, roy has problems, bradie has problems, but patriots surivived with Asante Samuel back there.
