Romo on golf

Sorry for the delay, I know you've been wondering how Tony Romo performed at today's local qualifying at Hackberry Creek Country Club for the U.S. Open in June. Well, he shot a 1-over, 72, missing a possible playoff by four shots.

For a guy who plays once a week (his estimate), Romo had a fantastic round. If he could get the putter going he would have been in contention. By my count he had four birdie putts from 20 feet by inches and two eagle putts by a few inches too. Romo was the low man in his group, which included Sky Creek Ranch pro Troy Lewis.

There are some of you who wonder if Romo's golf game gets in way of his football work. It doesn't. He showed up about 40 minutes before his 12:30 tee time to warm up after his morning workout at Valley Ranch.

It was particularly interesting to hear Romo during the round. He was fired up at one point after making back-to-back birdies brought him close to contention. He said the pressure he works under in tournament conditions helps him on the football field.

“I really feel like part of what allows me to be successful in anything is just my competitive nature,” Romo said. “The feeling I get when I try and strive for something, try and get better, try and win. Some guys go backward when they get toward the lead. Some guys get better. I feel like the more competition you put yourself in the better you could possibly perform under pressure situations.”

ok the name Hack-berry tells me something. Lets stick to football shall we. We only hope we was working out.

Tony's extra curricular activities worry me. I expect THE quarterback of THE Dallas Cowboys to be focused on football. But every time I see him he's doing interviews on T.V. or practicing his golf game. I'm waiting to see how he performs next year before I recognize him as our longterm qb...

I'm glad that we have a QB that can focus. Do you know hard it is to shoot even par? From the tips!? Golf is a mind game and some say that it parallels life.

Also, I don't know how Romo can go from bench presses and squats to chipping and putting with touch. That's impressive.

Come on people he only plays once a week, that's 2 times less than some Doctors I know.

If he plays golf once a week on his day off, what's wrong with that? Doesn't everybody wants to get away for at least a day from their Monday to Friday job, why can that not be the same for the Dallas Cowboys QB or any NFL player.

Yeah, why can't Tony hang out at the White House like a good Cowboy should?

I think it is great that Tony plays golf. I guarantee he spends more time at Valley Ranch than almost everyone on the team, as a starting QB should. What is wrong with playing some golf for a downtime activity? I do it, and I know it give me a relaxing outlet for everything else going on at work and home. Good for him. The only way I would get worried is if he started spending more time on the links than the pro golfers.

Kind of interesting to hear a complaint about a Dallas Cowboy playing golf on his day off when you think about other high paid athletes crashing motorcycles, blowing out a knee playing pickup basketball, donating cash to strip clubs and driving drunk. Give the guy a break.

Romo coming up short on the putting green is a microcosm of his football career. Remember coming up just short of the goaline against Detroit? What about coming up just short of the first down after fumbling the snap in Seattle?

I really think that no matter what Tony does there will be way too many people have something negitave to say about it. Make you wonder if there are that many people so jealious of him and so unhappy with there own life. At least he is not in and out of jail for Drugs and DWI every time he is in the news.

What about coming up short on comments that are bitter and petty?
By the way, how's Tony's engagement to that conniving golddigger?

Time to put the clubs in the garage, and start working on football. Your going to need it T Ro

Hey, if the Cowboys go anything less 8-8 next year, he'll be playing golf way more than once per week, maybe even looking forward to 2008 Q-School. However, I don't think playing golf has hurt his football progression any, he actually played a lot more golf prior to becoming the starter. I think he has high expectations for himself, I mean Carrie Underwood....he's swinging for the bleachers. Why not? He'll be fine. I agree with Gail and Joe

It's the off season, for crying out loud. I guess all these 9 to 5 er's are constantly working on their jobs even on Saturday and Sunday afternoons when they aren't at their jobs. The guy has a hobby, and if this were week 15 and he had a divisional showdown tomorrow, then it would be different. All work and no play makes Tony a dull boy.

Do you think he dropped the ball on the 18th tee after his caddy handed it to him? (Sorry, had to go there...)
