I haven't heard any rumblings around Valley Ranch that the Cowboys have interest in Daunte Culpepper, so file this post under Filling Slow Time With Meaningless Debate. I've got a soft spot in my heart for Culpepper after he led a couple of my fantasy football teams to titles. I also watched backup QB Brad Johnson play soft-toss this spring. So there's a part of me that would like to see the Cowboys make a play for Culpepper once the Dolphins let him loose. However, it's obvious that Culpepper isn't the QB he was before his knee blew up during the 2005 season. In fact, ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports that three NFL decision makers told him they'd call Drew Bledsoe before Culpepper if they needed an emergency starter. You also have to consider the chemistry issue. Culpepper still has a Pro Bowl ego. He wouldn't be satisfied as Tony Romo's backup, and that could cause problems in a locker room that already deals with T.O. on a daily basis. Doubt Jerry will call for my advice on this one. He'll probably just go to Jason Garrett, who worked with Culpepper last season. But, for the sake of meaningless argument, whaddya think? |

no way. Pro Bowl ego is the right word, with questionable skills at this point. I would rather live/die with B. Johnson.
Either way, it would mean Romo got hurt or can't play, which would suck anyway.

I would take Culpepper over B Johnson. He has more of an arm, and has worked with Garrett. Of course I would refer to Jason first. His knees are a concern.

I think it's obvious that without Randy Moss running a 90yd streak pattern at 400mph, Dante Culpepper is nothing.
Posted by Jeffrey @ 2:19 PM Mon, Jun 11, 2007
absolutely not! Even before his knee asploded a couple years ago, he was showing serious signs of questionable ability without Moss. BJ is a better option if only because he seems to have a higher football IQ (if a weaker arm).

Forget Culpepper, Johnson or Romo. The Browns are going 0-16 and we're getting Brian Brohm next year.
Posted by Brian @ 2:23 PM Mon, Jun 11, 2007
And this would give us how many qb's?
Posted by Brian @ 2:29 PM Mon, Jun 11, 2007
Forget Culpepper. I wouldn't pick him up just because of that goofy dance he does after throwing a TD.
Posted by Dave @ 2:45 PM Mon, Jun 11, 2007
It's not just his football decisions that stink. Culpepper is his own agent and has managed this drama in such a way that any team that brings him in will be the target of an NFL tampering investigation.
Posted by Bill In DC @ 2:47 PM Mon, Jun 11, 2007
Culpepper will never come to Dallas, he wants too much money and he wants to start. He will get neither in Dallas so there would be no point in even discussing it.
Posted by 5rings @ 2:49 PM Mon, Jun 11, 2007
Yeah, lets take a veteran playoff team and insert a rookie QB, thank goodness Ray is not running the cowboys!!!!
Posted by ernest t bass @ 3:01 PM Mon, Jun 11, 2007
Jones said he would sign him.
But only if he changed his name to Jale Peno Pepper.
Posted by Philip @ 3:01 PM Mon, Jun 11, 2007
I heard ESPN say Culpepper wants 3 million minimum.
Jerry has already paid T.O. his millions, Leonard Davis has his millions and next year...Romo is going to want more money.
Won't happen.
Posted by dave j @ 3:01 PM Mon, Jun 11, 2007
I don't think Culpepper would be very good here, but I also would trust Jason Garrett's opinion more than anything else and go by what he says.
One thing that does concern me - I have not heard anyone mention how much SMALLER Culpepper's body is than when he played in Minnesota in 2005. I wonder how that afects him physically and mentally. He is so much thinner. I am assuming that is because he couldn't train and bulk up due to the knee injury.
Posted by Bob @ 3:05 PM Mon, Jun 11, 2007
NO way. Why would he want to? Culpepper might make an ok back up, but only that; and we have a good quarterback and from what I understand a good back up also. I don't think we have to worry about Dante at all.
Posted by Larry @ 3:10 PM Mon, Jun 11, 2007
Tim, it is a meaningless debate as far a Culpepper is concerned but I still maintain the cowboys have a big problem with Brad Johnson as Romo's back up. There you have a debate for sure.
From all I have seen and heard, it sounds like Johnson would have a hard time leading the boys to a win over South Garland, much less another NFL team. This could spell disaster for 2007 if the boys dont recognize and correct their error.
What are the odds a freewheeling guy like Romo can play a 16-game season and not go down for a few games.
Never thought I would say this but maybe its time to give a call to Drew Bledsoe. Good Lord, I actually said that.
EDITOR'S NOTE: South Garland certainly looks tough again this season. Those Colonels have a lot of talent.
Posted by Ray @ 3:35 PM Mon, Jun 11, 2007
5rings, I was speaking mostly tongue in cheek, but if Romo experiences a sophomore slump I think Brohm is someone you have to look at.

tainted goods...

Tim...I brought this up just a few days ago when you reported on the 1st OTA. But neither did you or anyone else comment on it. I'm glad that you focused on it since though. If the price was right, I still believe Jerry would do it as better insurance than Johnson...despite the controversy it would start. If he did, I think he knows Romo would stay focused and not feel threatened like QCs and Ellises.

Since South Garland is my alma mater, I feel compelled to respond since my school's name was invoked in a seemingly derisive manner. However, I don’t want to engage in one of those verbal “blogfights” that some of you seem to enjoy. I will only say that I’m proud of my school and its football team (which I played for in the mid ‘80s), and I’ll defend my school’s honor as long as I live. Go Colonels!
(B.T.W. I think I’d even re-sign Vinnie Testaverde before I’d go after Culpepper.)
Posted by Steve @ 5:15 PM Mon, Jun 11, 2007
I would rather have 2 more T.O's.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Posted by Chester @ 6:33 PM Mon, Jun 11, 2007
Absolutely not! The Pepper is washed up. He one of those runner/passer QB's that don't fit anymore, especially as a backup. Johnson is the perfect backup. We're set.
Posted by Eric @ 8:06 PM Mon, Jun 11, 2007
HECK NO! Not even for the vet minimum. I laughed when the Dolphins gave up a second round pick for this guy. Randy Moss should be getting 20% of Culpepper's contract. Culpepper has been nothing without Moss.
Posted by Andrew @ 8:33 PM Mon, Jun 11, 2007
No, Dallas should not be interested in CPepp.
But the "Pro Bowl ego" argument is a weak one -- it's not like Brad Johnson is Mr. Modest. He's already said he still wants to be a starter in the league and that he's not interested in being a "mentor." Great.
So we have a geriatric with a weak arm and a pouty attitude who's hoping for our start QB to go down. Count me worried.

"three NFL decision makers told him they'd call Drew Bledsoe before Culpepper"
Manny, Mo and Jack???
or
Mo, Larry, & Curley???
Posted by Richard @ 9:34 PM Mon, Jun 11, 2007
Not just no, but hell no! Cullpepper has never been good, and will never be good. I wish people would stop giving this guy a platform, and that he would just go away.....for good.
Posted by Calhoun @ 11:58 PM Mon, Jun 11, 2007
Larry, are you kidding? surely you jest. There is nothing wrong with Johnson as a back-up. Quit over-analyzing everything. Wake up ,the pre-season hasn't even started yet, and you're debating the back-up QB!
Posted by john @ 7:07 AM Tue, Jun 12, 2007
you have to look at this from all angles. If the coaches feel Johnsons arm is fine, despite what we are hearing about lack of arm strenth, then we are fine and nothing should be done. If there is some real concern from the coaches on Johnsons arm, then we need to look at options. Then the question becomes how healthy culpper is. That would be a major concern considering Miami is choosing Green to start, and there are still some major concerns on his health and ability to play a full season
Posted by Larry @ 10:31 AM Tue, Jun 12, 2007
Calhoun, I do not jest. To me this is a very real concern and it is shared by many cowboy fans.
Gincy, I meant no disrespect to South Garland. I live in South Garland and support the colonels.
Call it over analyzing or whatever you will Calhoun, but mark my word, if Romo goes down for 3 or 4 games, the season will go right down the tubes with Johnson at the helm. He is a Bledsoe without the strong arm.
Posted by Calhoun @ 11:49 AM Tue, Jun 12, 2007
Mark my words. The 1st snap of PRE-SEASON hasn't even started yet. If I'm not mistaken, Brad Johnson has taken a team to the Superbowl. Bledsoe hasn't. (Tom Brady did, not Bledsoe). What have you seen this pre- pre- season with Johnson that no one else has seen?
Posted by Larry @ 1:04 PM Tue, Jun 12, 2007
Calhoun, we will just have to agree to disagree but this comment from you last post is just wrong:
"What have you seen this pre- pre- season with Johnson that no one else has seen?"
Unless you have been in a cave for a while, you must know there are lots of fans and media members who seriously question this guy's ability as a QB at this point in his career at age 73. Andrew's post above is just an example.
I really hope I am wrong and you are totally right. As you suggest, we will see when preseason games begin.
Posted by Calhoun @ 1:21 PM Tue, Jun 12, 2007
I put more faith in the coaches who thought it was a good signing then the fans and media you mentioned. The fans and media don't coach the team. BTW, I live in a house, so ease up on my dwelling situation!

Culpepper, Jerry LET'S WIN. HE WILL get the ball to T.O.. JERRY, MAKE THE DEAL. (140,000.00)BEFORE JERRY (1,900,000,000.00)AFTER JERRY, TO REACH 3,000,000,000.00, JERRY IS THE MAN.
