Spencer's soft hands

Rookie OLB Anthony Spencer's interception in the Saturday morning session might have been the most impressive play in either minicamp.

Spencer, the Cowboys' first-round pick, displayed phenomenal athleticism for a 6-3, 260-pound dude. He was rushing full speed when Tony Romo, who was rolling right, cocked his arm to throw. Spencer stopped on a dime about a yard or two in front of Romo and skied into the air. It'd have been impressive if Spencer just batted the ball down.

But Spencer snatched the ball out of the air without even bobbling it, showing off amazingly soft hands for a guy who didn't have a pick in his college career.

"I got lucky," said Spencer, who did play some tight end in high school.

Spencer wasn't so modest when I asked whether Romo would have run him down: "Oh, no way. I was gone."

Is Spencer good enough to start over Ellis, even if Ellis is healthy?

EDITOR'S NOTE: Great question. I'll post my thoughts on Spencer's ideal role this season later this afternoon.

Of course this sounds great from Spencer, but what about last year's number one pick Bobby Carpenter?

Count me in as "very worried" about Brad Johnson being the backup quarterback.
Johnson is intelligent and a good teammate, but his arm is gone. It was in Minnesota and is in Dallas.
If he has to play significantly this season, you can scrap 50% of the Garret offense. I'm of the opinion this is the Cowboys biggest hole on the team.
Hindsight is always 20-20, but I wish the Cowboys would have made a greater effort in signing a Patrick Ramsey/Joey Harrington, quarterbacks with stronger arms and still young enough that Jason Garret and Tony Sparano can coach them into becoming solid backups.
This is a long shot, but what about placing a call to guage any interest at all from Drew Bledsoe as the backup.

Timothy,

"guage any interest at all from Drew Bledsoe as the backup."

ROFL. I can tell you the chance that Drew Beldsoe has any 'interest' in being a backup in Dallas. It is roughly the equivalent to the chance that a tornado whirling through a trash dump in Dallas will assemble a fully operational, fully fueled Boeing 747.

LOL..Just to be sure, I'll keep my eyes open in case that phenomenon develops.

Bledsoe coming out of retirement to be a backup to Romo is also as likely as said tornado whirling through a Valley Ranch landfill and assembling a fully operational inside linebacker named Brady James. So okay I should cut this guy some slack and see to what degree Bum Phillips' son can pump this guy up and get him to play to his potential. But you can never have too many solid linebackers particularly with a 3-4.
