Why couldn't Tuna and T.O. build that bridge?

I don't recommend reading this story about the Backyard Drills DVDs which star Bill Parcells, because it's long and boring. However, there is one quote worth sharing.

“When the bridge of respect is established, you can work together and talk through any problem,” Parcells says in one segment.

It sure didn't seem like the Tuna ever put on a construction hat in regards to his relationship with The Player.

oh yeah, the history of T.O. putting any effort into building relationships with anyone in a position of authority is . . . nill! I think the "ignore the problem" approach and treat him like everyone -- maybe with a dash of "I won't make a big deal out of him at all" may well work best.

Can we please stop with the Parcell's bashing/second guessing? Parcells and the rest of the coaches took on (at that time) a radio-active player and tried to navigate the media landmines regarding him. Parcells is as media savvy as any coach in any sport and even he had his problems dealing with the incessant media b.s. regarding the guy. And everyone should know by now that Parcells expects ALL his players to fit into their role and keep the griping/issues in house, but that was practically impossible with TO b/c the MEDIA always wanted more, always tried to create/enhance any story related to TO. Hindsight is 20/20, and it's probably true to say that Bill could have handled the situation better. BUT, I watched every single press conference/interview that Bill did last year, and the media should take some blame here with the strain that they put on this relationship with their constant barrage of meddling questions that were never asked about any other player besides TO. AND NOW the coach is gone...so what does it matter again? Geez, bring back Mosely...

Everytime I see him on that commercial saying "I know how to build a winning attitude in young men", I wanna throw a brick at my TV. A fine job he did here.

Time for some beard-strokin': Owens grows-up not knowing who is father is and wondering why his father has rejected him. Owens discovers, as a teenager, that his father has lived across the street the entire time. Huge psychological conflicts are made worse. Parcells' boot camp, my-way-or-the-highway approach is interpreted by Owens as more rejection. Owens reacts with unpredictable, childish behavior in a feeble attempt to control yet another relationship that he has no ability to control. If Parcells and Owens had been put on a boat together for a couple of days they probably would have ended up respecting each other.

Darius,
Save your TV. Parcells definitely built a winning team. We'll see if the attitude comes with it. He's HOF qualified dude. Don't forget that. Remember what life was like under Campo?

It is because Parcells did not bring T.O. to Dallas and did not sign him. Jerry Jones did.
When the owner signs a player (flying in his private jet to pitch him, no less) and then tells the coach, "Here, use this guy," that makes it a tough bridge to build, because the player was being wooed by the owner, NOT the coach.
Jones needs to count money and quit making football decisions. They've all turned out badly.

Bill Parcells was a great coach. The operative word being "was". Instead of embracing TO, he is the one that acted foolish and childish. Parcells had arguably the best WR in the league at his disposal and instead of embracing him he alienated him because his boss (Jerry Jones - owner of the team by the way) made the decision to bring TO to Dallas. Bill was out of line and uprofessional. Bill hasn't done anything coaching wise in years. It's no coincidence a few other players are happy he's gone also.

I think Parcells did a great job with T.O. and Vice Versa.. I love the cowboys too.. but I am not so enamored that I don't remember how Mariucci and Andy Reid handled the media on the T.O. subject.. and lastly.. PARCELLS CALLS ALOT OF PEOPLE "THE PLAYER" NOT JUST T.O. - people need to stop that craziness.. like he was just doing that to T.O.

Posted by ridgerunner @ 3:47 PM Mon, Jun 25, 2007

are we trying to say parcells did not know how to deal with T.O. after putting up with lawrence taylor all those years, come on its about winning football games you don't have to like a guy to get results. T.O. scored touchdowns left and right if parcells could not see his talent and at least respect that then shame on him.

It appears to me that the NFL has effectively "blackballed" T.O. This started when he defaulted on the trade to Baltimore and ended up in Philly. Everyone knows that T.O. took the Eagles to the Super Bowl. They were a good team, but could not get over the hump. In the big game...McNabb faulted. I do not honestly believe that anyone is so negligent to believe that only T.O is at fault. It appears that he became a scapegoat to disstract McNabb's failure in the big game. Their own lockerroom was divided on the issue.

I do not see the difference between T.O. going to Philly and Eli Manning defaulting on San Diego. Other than the obvious difference, this media attack on T.O. does not line up with logic to me. Donald Driver had more dropped passes...another media scam.

The Tuna is gone. Can we please move on?

Posted by DougO @ 9:21 PM Mon, Jun 25, 2007

The Big Flounder never built bridges...he burned them. That is, unless it was a one-way bridge to the doghouse. Parcells could only coach certain types of players, and that really limited his success later in his career.

Blazr25, you are free to move on at any time. It's always been within you. Go to the light!

But as for me, the Big Tuna Bites Abalone!

I used to stick up for Parcells, but he is just a failure and I can't stick up for him anymore. Why did I change my mind? Well, my domestic partner sat down with me and we made a list. Long story short: Parcells did a few good things, but he was a disrespectful, micro-managing, and tentative leader. He has serious communication problems which is why his teams consistently quit on him. The pressure finally proved too much, and rather than face the music, he ran off like a coward.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Methinks this isn't the infamous Maureen.
