Superstar columnist Tim Cowlishaw reckons it's in the best interests of Tony Romo and the Cowboys to take their time before agreeing to a long-term deal. T-Cow (unapproved nickname) figures it's too tough to determine what's fair at this point. He expects Romo to have a good first full season as a starter, but thinks playing for a big payday would only help. |

The cowboys should extend Romo because he is their last hope. Let me put out these senerios.
If the cowboys extend him and he is good then the team get a high quality player for less money. Also he cant be too unhappy with that contract for at least 3 or 4 years because he asked for it.
If the cowboys extend him and he is middle of the pack then they got what they paid for.
If he is extended and he is bad well who cares about the money, we are gonna have to probably use a high draft pick to get a quarterback or sign a free agent. Either way it probably means there is no chance for the team to be much better in the next two years and we would have to aim for success in the third year. That is enough time to recover from his salary cap hit and also allow for a rookie to get decent (a la philip rivers, matt leinart). The wild card is if we get a really good FA quarterback. But who would that be and signing them to a large contract would be an even bigger risk than extending Romo.
The only way we benefit from not extending Romo is if he is bad. If he is bad and we extend him it will amount to at most 8 or 9 mil wasted. If he is bad and we do not extend him well then we save that money but probably have to burn it (and more) for a FA. This would be a huge risk. The only alternative is to draft someone and I can not see us getting a quality return on a draft pick for at least 2 or 3 years after he is drafted.

THIS IS STUPID! The only thing that really matters here Tony wants to get it done. Thats it as far as I am concerned. Case Closed.
Jerry is also a gambler and here is pretty much a blackjack possibility. He (1) Shows faith in his QB and prevents this from being an "in season" issue and (2) He wraps him up for less than it will cost him after Tony has a good year.
This wait and see thing is so much hogwash. Tony is willing to gamble that the boys will be fair, realizing he could probably get more by waiting.
Jerry has got to realize waiting will probably cost him more at season's end. Jerry has to roll the dice that Tony IS that franchise QB. Tony isn't the kind of player who is going to play harder because he is awaiting a contract at the end of the year, but he just might play with a clearer mind not having to be ask about it 500 times during the season.
Again, this is stupid. DO IT!

Jerry Jones wants to wait and see how well Romo lives-up to their agreement of Romo strolling Traders Village on Fridays and Saturdays and singing Freddie Fenders' greatest hits.

If you are going to commit to Romo, yoiu have to commit for more than one year. After all, this will still be only his 2nd year, and first full year as starter. lets not forget that the "slump" he had last year was not all his fault. Sacks were up, not his fault. Defense stunk, not his fault. This issues put a lot more presure on him to perform. If we draft a player, we are giving up huge money for some one we HOPE will be good in a couple years. Lets give Romo a good contract now, commit to him, and we will be fine.
