Wade Phillips went out of his way to appear on the cover of his hometown Port Arthur News' football preview section. The paper wanted to put Phillips and new North Texas coach Todd Dodge, a fellow Port Arthurian (?), on the cover together. Phillips headed to Denton after being told folks were trying to work out the logistics to make it happen. The cover shot sounds pretty cool. It'll show Dodge, whose spread offenses at Southlake Carroll rewrote the Texas high school record books, matching X's and O's on a chalkboard with defensive whiz Phillips. I'd give Phillips the edge, but only until Dodge's QB son joins him at UNT. I'm sure many of you know that a pretty good ballcoach named Jimmy Johnson also hails from Port Arthur. With a Heineken in one hand and a fishing rod in the other, he proclaimed that he wasn't interested in returning to Valley Ranch after the Tuna's Lincoln Town Car left the parking lot for the last time. (Not that Jerry extended an invitation.) But possibly imaginary sources inform me that Jimmy did show interest in the Mean Green gig. However, the smart folks running UNT followed my advice and hired Dodge. Trust me, Jimmy wouldn't have lasted long at UNT (despite the beautiful football complex built thanks to ex-coach Darrell Dickey's four-year bowl run). If you think Jerry is a know-it-all gloryhog, just ask Dickey about the North Texas AD. |

Dear Tim,
With respect, why would you suggest that the AD here at North Texas is a "glory hog ?" Rick Villerral (sp) has been nothing but good for Denton and the Mean Green, but I don't recall him seeking out publicity for himself in all the time he has been here. Perhaps you know something I don't.

Nice parting shot, very similar to Dickey's classless black uniform stunt at his last home game. I thought you were above this, but then again I've been proven wrong before.

Disappointed in the uncalled for cheap shot at the UNT AD.

Tim? Have some UNT sour grapes for breakfast? Do you have tight loyalty to Dickey from your UNT beat days? DD deserved to be fired.. for his out of conference record alone. Add in his last two SBC seasons and he deserved it even more.

Same old Timmy - always right... and now with a chip on his shoulder.

If you mistake Rick V's enthusiasm and effort to put NORTH TEXAS in the spotlight then you're sorely mistaken. Yes he wants UNT in the spotlight. Any AD of a growing program is going to want that. But I have never seen UNT's AD pump himself up or show a "me" attitude. Darrell Dickey was great for UNT but he had taken the program as far as he could. Rick V's got a bigger picture in store for UNT athletics and this alum's certainly glad we've got him. That was an undeserved, unprofessional cheap shot.

Rick V. is the best thing that’s ever happen to UNT since Hayden Fry. Dickey deserved to be fire for insubordination alone, not to mention his win loss record. Rick is all about results and progress; UNT’s very lucky to have him!

Someone in the media actually has an opinion on UNT athletics? More MacMahon please. In this case, the comments are right on.

SF last words:
The Mean & Green Board is now closed. Thanks for posting on this board but I no longer have the time or desire to devote to UNT sports talk.
Glad to see he came out of retirement. SF: It's all negative, and it's all good.
