I'm on record predicting that Romo will break team records this season, so I certainly think he can make the big step to elite status. Good to see Calvin "Lucky" Watkins agree with me during today's chat. BgDFan5: You say we need Romo to become elite. How do you feel about Romo's chances of reaching that status? Calvin Watkins: Romo works hard in the film room and he has that personal pride that you need to become elite. Romo has always had the confidence that he can become an elite player and that's half the battle. He does have the physical tools – strong arm, smarts, leadership – to become that. |

Tim: What's the perception among scouts around the league as to Romo? I noticed, for instance, in ProFootballWeekly, a reasonably well-respected pub, it was asserted he doesn't have a strong arm (which I know you, and others have disputed). How do scouts see him? What is the perception regarding his so-called "struggles" at the end of the season. For example, we hear repeatedly how guys like Leinart, Young, and Rivers are the next big thing, and yet none of them were as good as Romo last year.

Will Romo become an elite QB? I guess we need to define elite. Elite like Staubach, Elway and Aikmann or elite like McNabb, Brees, and Hassleback. The second group being guys that get a lot of headlines but never really seem to do much in the playoffs. Are there any NFL QB's that arent considered elite by someone in the media? I hope Romo becomes the greatest player to have ever walked the face of the earth. Maybe we can a playoff game if he does. But until then you guys relax and let him play. And do him and us a favor, if he gets off to a good start dont annoint him the second coming until after he wins the ring...

Elite QB? I wish he wouldn't try and emulate his idol Brett Favre and try to force throws into coverage. He doesn't have the arm strength. He does have the confidence though and that can get him in trouble.
But what will ultimately define him in the annals of NFL history is whether he wins or not. He doesn't have the talent or pedigree to be elite, but did Tom Brady coming into the NFL? For him, it was attitude, work ethic, and leadership skils and then decision making when established as a starter. Romo has the first three, but does he have the discipline to play under control (ie, not like Favre?)

I think that if pressed for an honest answer, nearly every Cowboys fan out there would prefer Tony romo being a "Super Bowl Winning QB" rather than an "elite" QB! Look at McNabb; tons of Pro Bowls, 35 appearances in the conf championships...and now a 31 yr old soon to be has been gimpy QB with no ring. I don't know who the starting AFC QB for the 2000 Pro Bowl but I bet that whoever it was wishes he could have traded places with Trent Dilfer that February. Right now it's all guesswork really. All I know is that he is the first guy we've had here in a while that REALLY excited me and made me think that we might have found the guy...and don't tell me it is the same with Hutch or Henson - if you honestly believed that nonsense you're a fool.

Romo is more Danny White/Don Meredith than Aikman/Staubach. He will put up big numbers but has to be able to play within himself. The Cowboys have surrounded him with good coaches and talent and he has a real chance for succes. In todays watered down NFL Romo has a very good chance to win a Super Bowl.
