Cowboys secondary stars in NFL rules video

OK, I'm exaggerating with "stars," but I figured I'd get a few more eyeballs on this post by going with a sensationalizing headline.

At any rate, Terence Newman and Roy Williams made appearances during the point-of-emphasis part of the video. Newman was shown grabbing a fistful of Redskins WR Santana Moss' jersey as an example of defensive holding. Roy Williams provided an example of a fineable case of using the crown of his helmet on a defenseless receiver (some Texans scrub).

On the bright side, Roy was also used as an example for a legal play. He drilled sliding ex-Texans QB David Carr last season, but it was OK because Carr started his slide too late.

Follow the jump if you want to read about new rules and points of emphasis.

New rules:

*Spiking the ball in the field of play is now delay of game. You're still allowed to spike the ball in the end zone or out of bounds or spin the ball on the ground in the field of play.

*It's no longer illegal touching if a pass accidentally hits an offensive lineman.

*Hitting an eligible receiver below the waist while the QB is in the pocket is a personal foul and subject to league discipline.

*An airborne runner has to get a part of the ball over the pylon to score a touchdown. The runner used to be credited with a TD if any part of his body went over the pylon.

Points of emphasis:

*Illegal contact on eligible receivers and defensive holding. (This has been a point of emphasis for several years, since offense sells tickets and TV packages.)

*Roughing the passer (see above parentheses), including late hits, helmet-to-helmet hits and driving the QB into the ground after the pass is thrown.

*Taunting, especially the in-your-face yapping you see after almost every play.

You know the NFL is nearly as retarded as the US Government. They've put in all of these rules in the past 10 years to protect the QB. He gets to slide to avoid contact, you can't hit him in the lower legs, you can't hit him in the helmet, you can't jump into him, etc. But it's the NFL's own fault for having to protect their QB's. Prior to the hard salary cap teams were able to carry a Joe Montana/Steve Young or a Troy Aikman/Steve Beurline/Jason Garrett. So losing your QB for a month wouldn't be a death knell for a team's playoff dreams.

St. Jimmy,

You've got a big heart. Do you have any concern for the QBs health? I can't imagine what a 'roided up Shawne Merriman would do to those poor guys.

Saint jimmy, are you really gonna hate on both the NFL and the U.S. government in one post? I think it's time for someone to move to Canada....

Was there any video of Roy demonstrating a proper horse-collar tackle?

st jimmy is right this game is a violent game all these rules make it boring and pathetic. I watch for defense as well as offense. These new rules and point of emphasis things will make the game boring. I have an idea why not give the offense 12 players that way there can be 6 blockers for the QB oh hell why not give then 10 more players that way there can be 15 offensive lineman.

We don't want him. Maybe Mexico will take him?

Gary, why should I have love for the QB's? With all of these special rules they're 100 million dollar babies. And the NFL only has themselves to blame for that. Do you realize that the saying "The QB must go down and he must go down HAWD" is extinct now? You've got to know that Tom Landry, Vince Lombardi, George Halas and others are rolling over in their grave at the coddling the NFL is doing to one position.

Big Mike, I think it's time for someone to open their eyes and realize "moving to Canada" is no longer an insult. They have better beer, their women are notoriously better looking, they've got health care, the world doesn't hate them, and you can even smoke the whacky tabacky without getting treated worse than a rapists or murderer. If I didn't love my Cowboys as much as I do I would be in Canada in a heartbeat.

Let's end the charade with QB's. The rules for how you are permitted to touch a QB have gotten absurd. Put a flag on both sides of their hips and make them "flag down" players.

Saint Jimmy -

Let's see - Direct TV and internet catalog buying - there nothing holding you back. See YA!
This country needs Americans who love America.

saint jimmy - I take that back. You are obviously very enlightened. You are more than welcome in Canada. I'll even buy you your first Moosehead beer (brewed 60 miles from where this post originated from)

Too bad they can't star when it really counts.

Saint Jimmy, the suggestion to move to Canada was not meant as an insult. Canada was just the first country I thought of. After reading more of your whining about America and your self-professed enjoyment of illegal narcotics, I again suggest your leaving America. This time to the country of your choice...
