My buddy Craig e-mailed an interesting question: Could the Alamodome turf be partially to blame for all these injuries? My answer: Nope. The Alamodome turf is the good, grass-like stuff, not the knee-tearing Astroturf of the old days. Of all the injuries that have occurred in camp, only Aaron and Terry Glenn's knees could have anything to do with turf. And I happened to be watching when Terry Glenn was hurt -- he did it when he stepped on Terence Newman's foot while running a route, so the turf gets off on that one, too. |

Correction, Alamodome turf is not the really good stuff. Hemphaline 7800 is considered the smoothest of the synthetic, turf grade artificial surfaces. The Alamodome utilizes Science Grass, a product most popular about 4 years ago as a reasonable replacement for the harsh, rubberized surfaces of old. Hemphaline 7800 is not only realistic in look and feel (it's laid over a 2 inch soil surface), but also has biological characteristics akin to real sod, for example, Hemphaline actually synthetically photosynthesizes. Fascinating stuff.

Tim...please go interview someone. A player, a coach, a fan...a groundskeeper, a felon, an infant. Give us something.

Just got the new NFL 08 for Xbox Wii. It rocks. Have TO going deep in the backfield of the opposing side. I'm working the paddle hard. Great graphics. Sweet.

The other day I heard Nate Newton talking in a break (he thought the mike was off) on Talking Cowboys and he conveyed the strong concern by veteran Cowboys about the condition and/or type of field utilized at the Alamodome. He has made similar reference on air but not as strongly. So what is the concern by veterans if the turf is all so good?

Why on Earth are we supposed to listen to the ramblings of an uneducated reporter about the quality of the field? Nate Newton, who would qualify as a turf expert, has said that the field isn't that great and says that it shifts/slides under the player's feet. And he's not the only one who has said that. Other players, more turf experts, have complained that the turf is very poor.
Just because the Alamodome turf looks like the nice synthetic grass that is popular doesn't mean it's good. It could be laid down improperly, it could be wearing thin, it could be missing one of it's several layers it needs, it could be low on it's "sod" (ground up tires), etc.
