Ellis won't need much work to get ready

ERICH SCHLEGEL / DMN

Legendary play-by-play man Brad Sham asked Wade Phillips how many practices Greg Ellis needs to be ready for the regular season.

"Uh, let's see, a walkthrough on Saturday and I think he'll be ready," Phillips deadpanned. "He knows what to do."

Phillips mentioned that Bills DE Bruce Smith missed all of the 1996 preseason because of an injury. Smith played 86 snaps in the opener, getting a sack on the last one to set up the winning field goal in an overtime victory.

The opponent that game: the New York Giants, who happen to be first on the Cowboys' schedule this season. Phillips made sure to mention that.

Smith ended up being the NFL Defensive of the Year that season, but Phillips stopped short of predicting that Ellis would win the honor this year.

The Cowboys are also working on contingency plans in case Ellis can't go to start the regular season. Bobby Carpenter worked some at OLB during today's practice and will get playing time there against the Texans.

I can see Ellis going on the PUP list to start the season.

he cant go on PUP, if you practice at all during training camp (which he did for like 10 minutes) your not eligable for the PUP list

Derrick he can't. He practiced the first day of camp, thus making him ineligible.

Well I think Ellis will make it on field for the 1st season game. I'm not sure how much playing time he will get during the year because there are a couple of guys hot on his heels, and with them getting more playing time, his job could be in jeopardy. With that I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he is not the starter by the end of the season or at least the beginning of next season.

I like Greg Ellis, and I love the cowboys, but comparing him to Bruce Smith in any way, is completely rediculous. Smith is one of the greatest to play his position. Ellis is a border-line bust, considering he was supposed to be a first round talent.

Comparing Greg Ellis to Bruce Smith is like comparing a Ferrari to a Model T.
He might be the nicest Model T there is - but, he's still a 6-banger.

The best news I have heard this week is that they are finally moving Bobby Carpenter outside to work with Spencer. Should have done that weeks ago.

Even if Ellis comes back at this point no one knows how effective he will be. Knowing the plays and playing hard is one thing. Being effective after nearly a year of absense for an ageing player is something else entirely.

You people are so literal it makes me sick!
