Guys who helped their cause

AP

A look at some fringe players whose performances tonight might put them on the 53-man roster:

WR Miles Austin: His two best plays -- catch-and-runs of 31 and 30 yards -- were called back. But Austin, a speedy, 6-3, 216-pound second-year guy, flashed enough potential to make it real tough to cut him.

DL Stephen Bowen: Took advantage of a starting assignment by getting a sack and three tackles. Consistently had good penetration.

NT Remi Ayodele (right): His final impression was nailing a RB five yards behind the line of scrimmage. Made a team-high five tackles, which is a ton for a nose tackle who didn't play the whole game. Did he convince the Cowboys to keep seven D-linemen?

LB John Saldi: Don't think he'd have a shot if Kevin Burnett and Greg Ellis weren't hurt, but they are. Saldi, who can play inside or outside, was very active in the fourth quarter.

FS Courtney Brown: Flashed great athleticism on his leaping interception, but I doubt he'll make it over Abram Elam, one of the Cowboys' top kick coverage guys.

And the guy who returned the first punt of the night 95 yards for a touchdown, breaking tackles and outrunning everyone? Hello?

Posted by Frank @ 10:23 PM Thu, Aug 30, 2007

Austin has a little something to him. He was terrific last year returning kicks when Thompson went down. He seems to have an explosivness to him that I really like. Give me him over Urban who has fielded two punts inside the 5 in two games.

Austin did impress me. He looked more natural catching the ball with his hands and showed an ability to catch and turn upfield. I would have cut him yesterday, but after today I'm keeping him. Urban looked impressive, minus the fumble, and it may be hard to get him to the practice squad.

Thank gawd the preseason is over

Miles is the fastest player on the Cowboys after TNew.

This kid is TO's replacement if he can progress.

Woe is our CB situation, especially since it is apparent that Newman's heel will dog him throughout the season. Forget Everson Walls. Can somebody please check to see if Kareem Larrimore is available, and if Dwayne Goodrich is out of jail?? Or maybe Phillipi Sparks, inspired by his daughter's win on American Idol, will come back for us.

Mr.T-Mac:
Nice job of reporting The Truth on #55 who once again when on the field he makes plays as he did at TT.He has shown that he can play all LB positions and plays special teams like a LB not a DE.He was all Big 12 all 4 years while at TT and has Earned a spot on this roster working for over a Year here and in NFLE for last nights opportunity...No opinons just The Truth,go look at the Tape.Remember he's built Texas Tough.Say good-bye to DE's #53 and 52 and Hello OLB #55 fromer Red Raider and Southlake Dragon..

No so crazy Ray, Dwayne Goodrich sucked anyway. Regardless of whether he went to jail or not. I think that the Cowboys were helped out with him inspite of themselves during the Campo era.

I'm with you Pokes. Let the games begin!

Do any of you other people also worry that TNEW will be another Kevin Smith (after his bad injury in '95) from this point on??

Posted by Tanner @ 9:45 AM Fri, Aug 31, 2007

I agree on our CB situation. The Texans showed the league how to beat our blitz. Go 3 or 4 wide and only use 3-5 step drops. Hopefully we are all overreacting about the TNew injury. Hopefully Wade keeps Roy out of 1-on-1 coverage on WRs. And Hopefully DWare is such a beast he can sack a QB in under 3 seconds.

Is it just me, or did this DB situation seem like it came out of nowhere? Why did we give Henry that much money? Come-on, he blows!

Posted by Anthony @ 3:14 PM Fri, Aug 31, 2007

Tim I think Saldi would be a nice addition to the team also after last night. I'm kinda frowned up about cutting Austin or Urban because we need both of 'em. Conspiracy theory: Is Marcus Spears on tha trading block, so we can keep Bowen and Remi on the DL?

Here's the real question. Our first team was embarrassesd by Houston, our subs were embarrassed by Minnesota. So are we really thinking we will even be in the playoffs? Don't count on it! I'm thinking 7 or 8 wins!

Miles Austin is an example of pure talent. This kid just started playing as a senior in high school. Stepped into Monmouth U (where i went to school) and set records. And believe me we weren't a great team and i can bet the coaches weren't the best for a young WR.

Now in his second year behind some really good coaches i think this natural talent is becoming a refined skill. He is going to be sick.
