Live from the Alamodome XIX

Tim MacMahon   E-mail   News tips

Uh-oh. There's some whining in the Alamodome press box that the Cowboys aren't in full pads for this afternoon's practice. Just helmets and shoulder pads.

I won't let that minor detail put a damper on my enthusiasm during this rapid-fire, live-blogging session. My fingers will hit the keyboard as hard as ever.

From the Department of Self-Promotions: I'll be on ESPN Radio in Austin for about 10 minutes at 3:40 (listen here). The Cowboys should be stretching then, so I won't miss anything important.

Follow the jump and all that good stuff.

3:04 -- Legendary LB Lee Roy Jordan, one of Wade Phillips' heroes when he was in high school, is in the house. He talked to the team after this morning's practice. Phillips was thrilled that Jordan kept referring to the Cowboys as "we."

3:11 -- Cowboys do get a handful of days off before the season opener. I'll post the practice schedule later.

3:12 -- Andre Gurode and Terence Newman are dressed out, but they probably won't do much. Wade Phillips said they have the flu.

3:19 -- Jason Hatcher won't practice this afternoon and maybe not until the Cowboys get back to Valley Ranch. ... Only cheerleaders around these parts are Rowdy and certain scribes on the team payroll, so Carrie and Jessica have no reason for concern. ... Wade Phillips has raved about Cowboys' conditioning, but it is 70 degrees in here. It'll be interesting to see how they hold up in the heat. ... Let me get at least six quarters of preseason football under my belt before I start predicting scores of regular-season games.

3:22 -- Tony Romo, Andre Gurode, Julius Jones, Jason Witten and Tyson Thompson are circled up and playing hacky-sack with a football. Romo is a big-time ballhog.

3:27 -- For a "cancer", Greg Ellis sure spends a lot of time teaching young bucks like DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer. ... Will try to take a look at position battles later, but not in the cummulative mood right now. ... Believe it was a Do Not Enter sign, but not 100 percent sure. ... This is definitely a traditional man-blocking line. Cowboys are counting on Bigg Davis and Andre Gurode, in particular, to overpower dudes. Having said that, I'm sure they have several plays that use zone-blocking principles.

3:33 -- I'd just be guessing on Greg Ellis' full-pads return. All I know is they expect him to be ready to go against the Giants. ... Whether T.O. plays in the first preseason game depends on how his back feels. They'd like him to get a couple series with Romo. ... I think Jackie Battle will be a practice squad guy if he sticks with Dallas. Jerry has raved about Tyson Thompson, and they won't keep four tailbacks.

3:37 -- Ex-Vikings owner Red McCombs, who sold a bunch of cars in San Antonio, is walking around the field chatting with folks. He just shared a warm embrace with ex-Minnesota QB Brad Johnson.

3:58 -- Back from my radio bit. ... Time to answer some questions. ... The players are bonding quite well over hot wings at Hooter's and the hazing of rookies. Everybody is getting along just swell, and I'm sure that will continue as long as Wade Phillips is undefeated with the Cowboys. ... Bill, Wade said he got the tape and the index cards. He mentioned that your entire defensive scheme fit on the front of one card. ... I think Patrick Crayton's role will remain the same as long as the starting WRs stay healthy. My guess is he'll probably have to start at least a few games, though. ... No college CB is considered a top-five pick in next year's draft at this point. ... Phillips isn't trying to hide Bobby Carpenter. He's trying to play to his strengths, which is why Carpenter will be a major player in passing situations. ... Gotta tell me what the odds are of the Cowboys making the Super Bowl, so I can't say whether that'd be a wise bet. ... I'd be a bit nervous about Tony Romo playing a full quarter if they have two backup tackles out there. Jerry said as much today, too.

4:06 -- Inside run and WR-DB 1-on-1s have started. ... Jerard Rabb beat Anthony Henry on a deep ball right off the bat. Brad Johnson put the ball on the money 40 yards downfield.

4:08 -- Richard Bartel is really struggling. Jerheme Urban beat Alan Ball bad on a flag route, but Bartel held on to the ball for way too long and then underthrew it bad enough to let Ball break it up. ... Andre Gurode and Terence Newman are both participating, so maybe the training staff found a miracle cure for the flu. Or perhaps Dr. Phillips' diagnosis was wrong.

4:10 -- Anthony Henry update: Great coverage and PBU on a deep ball to Jamel Richardson, gave up a completion on a skinny post to Richardson. ... Really nice catch by Sam Hurd on a 20-yard fade route. He made a good adjustment on a ball thrown behind him (intentionally, because Newman had good coverage), went up high to catch the ball and came down with both feet barely inbounds.

4:14 -- Damarius Bilbo actually looks pretty good at receiver. He's 6-2, 218, looks quick out of his cuts and has good hands. Cowboys might want to stash him on the practice squad another year and see how he develops once they settle on a position. ... Deon "Cricket" Anderson is barking with Bradie James. Didn't see what started it.

4:18 -- Kicking comp now. ... Martin Gramatica went 5-for-5 (28, two in the 30s, 43 and 50). He boomed the 50-yarder, knocking it all the way back into the screen.

4:20 -- Nick Folk matched Gramatica, hitting the screen on the 50-yarder and all. ... Kickoff stuff now, so I'm about to answer some questions.

4:21 -- It's socially acceptable to blog naked if the privacy of your own home, but not in the Alamodome press box. ... DT Glenn Dorsey could definitely be an option with the Browns' pick, but it's my belief that LSU players are cursed as Cowboys. ... Wouldn't hold my breath on Asante Samuel getting traded to the Cowboys or anybody else. ... 20-1? Sure, I'll throw down a C-note if it's somebody else's cash. ... No. 1 key for the Cowboys: Keep Jerry out of the coaches' meetings. ... 7-on-7 and pass-rush drills now. ... Will answer more questions later.

4:27 -- Khari Long just left Pat McQuistan flat-footed. Long might have jumped, but he sure looked quick off the ball. ... More good battles between Bigg Davis and Jay Ratliff. Davis didn't have great position, but don't think Ratliff would have gotten a sack on the two snaps. Davis is strong enough to push Ratliff out of the way if he can just get one hand under his pads.

4:30 -- Marcus Spears got by Joe Berger pretty easily with a spin move. ... Khari Long is giving James Marten a tough time, using his hands to get off the block. ... Cory Procter put Montavious Stanley on the turf but got bull-rushed back into the QB by Ola Dagunduro.

4:33 -- Tony Sparano gave Doug Free some love after he stood up Chris Canty on a stunt. ... Khari Long got inside Pat McQuistan but came up limping. He walked it off.

4:36 -- Mat McBriar had two nice end-over-end punts from the plus-46. First one went out of bounds at the 2, and the second was downed at the 1. ... About to answer more questions.

4:37 -- I think it's bad to have a slow CB, no matter how fast the guy on the other side is. ... Can't say I'm said camp will end soon. Looking forward to getting home with the fam. Take your hot girlfriend to Boudro's and get the guacamole. ... Good to see from great former Denton High coach Gary Fischer, who was kind enough to repeatedly give me do-overs on radio interviews when I forgot to hit record as a college student. ... My impression of Khari Long is that he is bigger and a better pass-rusher than Alex Obomese, but don't think that'll be enough to beat out Junior Glymph for that last LB spot. ... Valley Ranch practices won't be open to the public. ... Boxer briefs, thanks for asking. ... Asante Samuel is plenty interesting already, but I just don't think the Patriots will trade him. ... Courtney Brown might be practice squad fodder. I'm not sure Abram Elam makes the team, and he's ahead of Brown in the safety pecking order. ... Wouldn't get my hopes up for any of the undrafted rookie receivers.

4:45 -- They're going 11-on-11 now. Sam "Training Camp Star" Hurd just dropped a short pass that hit him between the 1 and 7.

4:46 -- Pretty sure Kevin Burnett is fully recovered from his concussion. He put Julius Jones flat on his back when Jones tried to pick up Burnett on a blitz.

4:48 -- Tony Curtis was 10 yards downfield before he realized the ball hadn't been snapped yet. ... Doug Free never got a paw on a speed-rushing DeMarcus Ware.

4:51 -- Matt Moore hadn't finished his drop by the time Bobby Carpenter got in his face after blitzing up the middle.

4:52 -- Best fight of training camp!!! Pat Watkins punched Julius Jones in the facemask, and Deon "Cricket" Anderson got Jones' back by slamming Watkins to the ground. Couldn't really tell what happened after that other than a bunch of helmets moving around.

4:53 -- In less exciting news, Tony Romo hit Miles Austin on a deep sideline route and Anthony Fasano on a seam route. Nice diving catch by Fasano, who didn't have a good morning practice.

4:55 -- Am I the only one who questions the strategy of punching someone in the facemask?

4:57 -- Team drills end with Richard Bartel and Damarius Bilbo hooking up for a deep ball. Looked like the Cowboys borrowed G.A. Moore's 10-1 defense on the play, leaving Anthony Henry in man coverage.

5:00 -- Oops. Still doing team drills. Tony Romo hit Jason Witten on a 10-yard out and Miles Austin on a deep crossing route against the starting D.

5:05 -- Not sure what got into Pat Watkins, but he sure is feeling feisty. He laid out Sam Hurd after Hurd caught a short pass. Hurd just got up and patted Watkins on the butt.

5:07 -- Perhaps I shouldn't jump to conclusions with Watkins. He might have hit Julius Jones with an open hand, not a fist. Either way, I don't get hitting a guy in the facemask. Always go with the gut shot in a football fight. Much more likely to hurt the guy and less likely for the refs to see.

5:10 -- Marcus Spears is whuppin' up on the backup O-line. He got pressure on Brad Johnson on one play, then met Jackie Battle just after he got the handoff the next.

5:12 -- Ken Hamlin tried to bring the hammer on Jackie Battle at the goal-line, but Battle put Hamlin on his butt. It would have been pretty cool if Battle would have spiked the ball and done some barking, but I reckon that wouldn't be a wise move for an undrafted rookie. ... Practice over. Much, much more later.

6:17 -- Late update: Scribes with a much closer view than me say that Julius Jones actually body-slammed Pat Watkins. Deon "Cricket" Anderson hopped in the action right after that.

Tim...how close do the cheerleaders get to Romo during practice?...we were just wondering that's all...has he taken any pictures with them at mid-field during practice?...

Suspiciously Yours,

Hey Tim,

How do the 'Boys look conditioning wise? Are they in "4th quarter" shape, or are they sucking wind, or somewhere in between?

Posted by L. Lohan and P. Hilton @ 3:16 PM Mon, Aug 06, 2007

Tim...from looks Ellis and Spencer appear to have the same body type while Ware's is alot more sleaker...is that what it looks like to you?...also...do you like Green M&Ms?...

Tim, What team do u think we will have the biggest victory over this season. what is your guestimated score?!?

Posted by Justin - AKA Hater of Greg @ 3:20 PM Mon, Aug 06, 2007

Tim,

Why do i hate on Greg Ellis? I know, cuz he's a cancer.

What a loser.

Anyway, how about a cumulative update on position battles/ folks trying to make the team.

Posted by Quincy C. @ 3:23 PM Mon, Aug 06, 2007

Tim...what kind of traffic sign was used on Hammerhead's noggin?...maybe Jerrah should think about signing a guy that can take down a starting defensive NFL player...

Posted by Pippin @ 3:24 PM Mon, Aug 06, 2007

Was reading an interesting article about zone blocking this morning (via Football Outsiders, link in my name). Can you tell us what kind of schemes the Cowboys seem to be using from where you're sitting? With a line our size, I'm guessing they're mostly going with man blocking?

Posted by Hot Rod @ 3:28 PM Mon, Aug 06, 2007

When do we expect to see Greg Ellis back in full gear? Do you think T.O. plays for a drive with the 1st team on Thursday?

Posted by L. Lohan and P. Hilton @ 3:30 PM Mon, Aug 06, 2007

Tim...was that a UCLA Bruin shirt you were wearing during last nite's camp report or were you just happy to see Matt Moore?...also...do you know of a good facial moisturizer?...

Posted by Nic @ 3:32 PM Mon, Aug 06, 2007

How is Jackie Battle doing? Is he a practice squad guy or does he have a legimate shot at the final roster? The guy's combination of size and speed is certainly intriguing. I know he was one of the most sought after UFA's this year.

Posted by drhorton @ 3:34 PM Mon, Aug 06, 2007

When did hacky sack become a cure for the flu (see Gurode, Andre)?
I need to go back to school for more training. I seem to have missed that chapter.

Posted by Justin - The Anti Cancer @ 3:35 PM Mon, Aug 06, 2007

Tim,

Greg's training camp is eerily similar to a #81 w/ the eagles.

When does he spend time with new guys? When he has the rubberband tied to his butt on the sideline?

Cancer. Melanoma. Tumor.

Posted by Quincy C. @ 3:36 PM Mon, Aug 06, 2007

my thinking is that if it was a "Stop" sign then Hammer should play Strong Safety and if it was a "Yield" sign then he should play Free Safety...

Posted by Ai Samurai @ 3:42 PM Mon, Aug 06, 2007

I asked this before, but now that camp in San Antonio is coming to a conclusion...

How does team chemistry look from your standpoint? How do players get along? What do players do to bond or learn more about each other (assuming they have the time outside of film and playbook study)? Besides team meetings, how does rookie treatment look? What players actively and willingly converse with T.O. regularly? With whom does he hang out, and where do they go off the field? Which players seem to slack off outside of practice? Which players appear to develop a special bond, much like Bledsoe and Glenn (or Romo and Witten)? How does the defense look as a unit? Do they play together (as in New England or Baltimore), or are they a bunch of talented freelancers (as in Washington)? What is their mood when talking or meeting together? Do they joke and laugh, or are they serious and professional? Do players seem to buy Wade Phillips' family atmosphere, or do some skeptical players roll their eyes?

Thanks for the information. Please give us the pulse of team chemistry, because that's what will keep the team together through a long and arduous 17-week season.

Posted by B. Parcells @ 3:43 PM Mon, Aug 06, 2007

Tim...is it true what I'm hearing about this pansy a** training camp under Wade and this new "philosophy"?...is he using my Betamax copy of "Backyard Drills" that I left him?...what about my 3x5 cards I left him with all the plays?...the ones I filed in the little plastic red box...I created those 3x5 cards using my type-writer...in fact is he even using my type-writer I left him with the new ribbons?...how about my slide-rule?...what about my cheerleader horn?...is he using that?...its white with the big blue star on it that I earned after coaching the team after that first season...my gosh is the stenographer still employed?...has Jerry re-assigned her?...she was the one that created the syllabus for training camp using the mimeograph machine...finally is the telegraph from my office still up and running?...this is making me ill...

Cantankerous Always,

Posted by Chris Richey @ 3:43 PM Mon, Aug 06, 2007

Hey Tim, thanks for everything. Keep up the great work! Do you think Crayton is going to see more reps this year, even if Glenn stays healthy? Also, do you see any promising CBs in the college ranks that the Cowboys could get with the Browns' pick next year?

Posted by Quincy C. @ 3:52 PM Mon, Aug 06, 2007

Hey Tim, Bodog has the Cowboys at 20-1 to win the Super Bowl. Seems a bit high to me!

Posted by CASEY @ 4:11 PM Mon, Aug 06, 2007

Hey Anthony Henry is my guy, but come on, did it ever ponder on you that, we have a BAD combination of starting corners, i understand that you want a physical guy who might give up a few things in the speed department, but i think its bad that we have one FAST corner and then one SLOW one, i mean i see why henry gets thrown at, i wish thier were more corners like 6th round pick Courtney Brown that have the SIZE AND SPEED, how do you feel?

Re: Facemask punching.

I think I'd go with more of an open-handed smack on the side of the helmet, maybe make their ears ring. Smaller chance of actually breaking your hand, which seems like a better option for, you know, professional athletes. Either than of a fask-mask shove, not punch.

Posted by Lawrence Baptista @ 5:08 PM Mon, Aug 06, 2007

Seems to me that Julius has been the center of all the camp fights so far. Maybe he didn't get to bond enough with his teammates since he trained in AZ in the off-season??

WOW!!! I haven't heard, "Tackled in the backfield for a loss." since Dave Campo was coach. Perhaps allowing your D-lineman to penetrate in the backfield will result in plays like this.

By the way, am I the only one who thinks Dave Campo looks like the techy dude in the movie Tango and Cash???

Posted by Bernardo @ 10:49 PM Mon, Aug 06, 2007

Not enough talk about the Marion Barber Julius Jones
showdown in the backfield. It seems everyone (specially Spangola) is walking on egg shells when it comes to accepting that the better running back
is still up in the air. Yes there will be a showdown
in the pre season and the better running back will be named the starter. It is not an automatic choice.
One will beat out the other.

I would love to hear more about this unsettled position. No one should be worrying about how either running back takes the final verdict.
We want whats best for the team

Posted by Richard Lauer @ 9:32 AM Tue, Aug 07, 2007

Here's hoping the opponents take the Cowboys to Hooters, it seems they would rather be there than working. As a viewer of Coach Landry's camps at Cal Lutheran, and seeing Septien ogleing the 12 year old cheerleaders at their camp, I think this camp has nothing to do with football and a lot to do with public relations,
