Bill Parcells sat down with the Albany Times Union's Bill Ettkin in Saratoga Springs and sounded like a guy who is happy (as he gets) to be permanently retired from coaching. The Tuna also shot down the theory that T.O. ran him out of town. "Not really," he said. "It's hard to explain. He's really not a bad kid. But you know some people just have to have certain things. I think he's one of those; he has to have certain things." (Read: attention. Ettkin's comment, not mine.) "He's a pleasant enough kid," Parcells said. "He's not mean-spirited; he's not vulgar. He's really OK in that respect. ... He didn't have anything to do with me (retiring) at the end of the day." This contradicts what Parcells pal Bob Knight said the day after the Tuna walked out the door. Knight blamed two evil forces for wearing Parcells' [beep] out: T.O. and the media. I reckon that means the media gets all the blame/credit. |

Well, the media sure didn't wear Parcells out during press conferences. They were all scared, except Mosley, to ask questions of any kind. He must feel that they got even with post-press conference speculation.

I'd venture it was T.O.s blame, but not his fault. Dallas is one of the highest-profile franchises in the NFL ... add on the extra media attention of having a player like T.O., and I could imagine it gets unbearable.
It's no wonder why Tuna referred to him as "the player" and was very tongue-in-cheek about Owens. He just didn't want to open another window for the media to barge through. Can't blame the guy ... it was probably a long season.

As far as Knight's concerned, anyway. I always got the impression that Parcells liked playing you guys the way he did.

Tim,
I would like to think the media did run parcells out of town but the truth is, the Dallas Media was too soft on parcells during his entire stay in Dallas.
I would listen to news conferences and think, "why in the hell don't they hit him on this" but then seldom did.
Considering his lack of success, Parcells got an easy ride in Dallas with the media.
The truth will never come out of Parcells mouth but this once great coach left because even he recognized that today's NFL game had passed him by. It aint any more complicated than that.

Wow Tim, right on time with breaking news again. One week late as usual.

Or the 3rd option being that Bob Knight doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.

Now...now...Timbo. Why in the world would you want to consider it being "credit" for having run a future Hall-Of-Fame coach out of town? Dude, that's strictly "blame" and nothing less.
There's no such thing as a badge of honor for a stunt like that.

Either that or maybe Bill finally realized he couldn't win without Bill B. running his defense.

D'Man -- Tim was referring to Traditional Media where the big boys play.
Not to Consumer-Generated Media like this blog.

.... and Belichick can not win without Crennel and Weiss.
(** have to say what stupidity this Belichicl argument, it comes from folks who have never been THE MAN so they don't know what it takes to build a winning team **)

"This contradicts what Parcells pal Bob Knight said the day after the Tuna walked out the door."
Since when is Bob Knight Bill Parcells' official spokesman?
Oh, that's right, he's not. But then again, why pass up an opportunity to create controversy where there is none? That would break one of the cardinal rules of media...along with not letting the facts get in the way of a story.
And enough with the constant oh-I-guess-everybody's-gonna-blame-the-media diatribe. The media are what they are and they do what they do. So please, if you're not going to change, spare us plebeians your pity.

The Cowboys sucked when he came here, they're pretty good when he left. They were looking quite good until Greg Ellis was injured. Parcell's record speaks for itself, two Superbowls, each team to playoffs, most were poor when he started. Why DMN keeps insulting him in their 'special' way is beyond me.

ernest t bass,
Re-read what Tim wrote and my response to it. The point is very clear here. He specifically points to the "media" and that is exactly what I was addressing when I wrote my reply.
I never said that the blame lies specifically with "Consumer-Generated Media like this blog", only media in general - which Tim referred to.
