Unofficial but guaranteed 53-man roster

5:59 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007 |
Tim MacMahon   E-mail   News tips

Todd Archer wrote about the decisions the Cowboys will have to make to cut the roster down to 53 players, but he stopped short of making predictions on which guys would stay and go.

I'll be the brave one and name names. And I'll even guarantee the predictions. If at least 35 of these guys aren't on the team Sept. 9, I'll wear a Cowboys cheerleaders uniform in the Texas Stadium press box for the season opener.

QB (2) – Tony Romo, Brad Johnson

RB (3) -- Marion Barber, Julius Jones, Tyson Thompson

FB (2) -- Oliver Hoyte, Deon "Cricket" Anderson

WR (6) -- Terrell Owens, Terry Glenn, Patrick Crayton, Sam Hurd, Miles Austin, Isaiah Stanback

TE (3) -- Jason Witten, Anthony Fasano, Tony Curtis

OL (10) -- Flozell Adams, Kyle Kosier, Andre Gurode, Leonard Davis, Marc Colombo, Pat McQuistan, Cory Procter, James Marten, Doug Free, Joe Berger

DL (6) -- Marcus Spears, Jason Ferguson, Chris Canty, Jay Ratliff, Jason Hatcher, Remi Ayodele

LB (8) -- Greg Ellis, Bradie James, Akin Ayodele, DeMarcus Ware, Bobby Carpenter, Kevin Burnett, Anthony Spencer, Junior Glymph

CB (5) -- Terence Newman, Anthony Henry, Aaron Glenn, Jacques Reeves, Joey Thomas

S (5) -- Roy Williams, Ken Hamlin, Keith Davis, Patrick Watkins, Abram Elam

ST (3) – Mat McBriar, Nick Folk, L.P. Ladouceur

In a playoff year, why would you go with a rookie kicker?

Posted by Dustin @ 6:17 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

Folk over Grammatica, eh? RISKY!

Come on, Timmy, pick the 3rd QB.

Posted by Don @ 6:23 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

I think it would be best for the team to not carry a 5th safety and keep Gramatica or Moore.

Posted by Rizory @ 6:26 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

Guaranteeing a 66% success rate on your prediction? That's real bold Timmy. Way to go out on limb. Even T-Cow could do that.

Posted by Damon @ 6:27 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

Only guaranteeing 35 out of 53? Way to go out on a limb... lol

Posted by Jim de Guad. @ 6:32 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

I made my picks yesterday and with one exception we are exsactly the same. I kept 3 QBs and cut James Marten.

A very accurate list.

Care to venture further on who will make the magic 45 on the game day roster?

And while we are on that subject...shouldn't the NFL do away with having only 45 suit up for a game? Why can't all 53 be active?

Posted by Merton @ 6:32 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

Keep another big tight end: either Miles or Austin needs to go.

Posted by Saint Jimmy @ 6:33 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

Ooooh, what a way to piggy back on Todd Archer and go out on a limb there Tim. Could have at least one upped him and tried to predict the practice squad.

Posted by Al @ 6:34 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

Only 35 out of 53, wow a real risk taker, eh? Not sure about Folk over "automatica" Grammatica...

Posted by Stan @ 6:35 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

Keeping 3 kickers, and one of them isn't Grammatica?
Weird, dude.
Cutting Polite, huh? You may be onto something there.
With those exceptions, it looks like your method is: Has anyone ever heard of this person before...I'll take him.

Posted by phil @ 6:39 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

Cricket! That's not very Polite

Posted by phil @ 6:41 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

Also I would keep Nate Jones over Joey Thomas, or better yet maybe keep Reeves, Jones, and Thomas and lose Abram Elam

Posted by carlos @ 7:09 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

I think Folk will beat out Gramatica. I've been reading that Folk is making everything in camp this year. I also saw how he hit that 52 yarder against Denver with ease.

Posted by Dan @ 7:13 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

So your saying the last half of this past draft was a waste? No way were going with a rookie kicker, been there done that. What has Gramatica done to lose his job?

Posted by James McCurry @ 7:16 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

I would replace Joe Berger with Courtney Brown.

Posted by L.J. @ 7:19 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

Good stuff Tim. Now, how about the practice squad?

Posted by Larry @ 7:28 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

I think there are several chances you might miss some of these Tim, but I gotta hand it to you.

If I HAD to pick 53 at this point, the only change I would make is Courtney Brown at safety instead of Abram Elam.

But, I dont keep a 10th lineman(Berger) at the expense of Matt Moore, and Matt will never make it to the practice squad.

Posted by Tom H @ 7:32 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

Looks like 48 or so "no brainers", Tim...
...leaves only 3-4-5 decisions to make.

Posted by wausroamer @ 7:33 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

Come on Tim,

35 out of 53 and you wear a cheerleader uniform.

I hate to think how many of your readers do that on a regular basis without even making the bet.

At least include some Tammy Faye makeup with that low number.

Posted by Gary @ 7:54 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

Why bet what you've already been doing for years?

Posted by mcindallas @ 7:57 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

hey Dustin, don't be too worried if they go with a rookie. hopefully the offense will score enough points or at least put him close enough that most his attempts are 'easy'. as long as he doesn't screw up extra points and anything less than 45yds he should be fine. he did make his first attempt last week, 52yds is no cakewalk. not bad for a rookie. yeah, i know it's only preseason but he's still kicking for a job.

*note: there were only 6 games total in the 92,93 and 95 seasons that were decided by a field goal or less. Cowboys were 3-3. NONE of those were in the playoffs.

Posted by Gary @ 8:01 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

ucd, the Patriots (a popular Superbowl pick every year) went with a rookie kicker last year over our very own Martin Grammatica. It happens. You just keep the best player.

Posted by Muy Chile @ 8:09 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

That's some educated guessing, you've got the "half a dirty dozen" rookie draft picks making the team. No rookie DB picks making the team? I agree with you now on Folk, but no telling what the next 2 weeks will bring on FGs. And I'm down with Cricket, he'll make the team, he blocked pretty well last week. The biggest question I have is with Ellis, I didn't think he would be ready for the opener, and out for the year is not too far fetched. And don't worry, you'll be wearing your apparel of choice on opening day.

Posted by Chad O'Connor @ 8:17 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

How bout listing the cuts then

Posted by collin mc. @ 8:39 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

what do you have happening with Moore?

Posted by cisco @ 8:43 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

Wow that's scary. At the beginning of training camp befgore the first practice I did the 53 man roster. You have Ayodele, I have Stanley. You have Thomas, I have Ball. Those are the only two differences.

Posted by Michael (Plano) @ 8:51 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

I don't know...looks pretty good..but you might want to get fitted, so you don't end up hanging out....Also who makes the practice squad?

Posted by Burt-D @ 10:44 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

Tim, looks about right. Except I see two possible upsets. One being Courtney Brown over Elam as Roy williams will be the SS here for years to come, and Hamlin is in a one year contract and Jerry might rather promote one of the young free safeties if they prove capable instead of dishing out big money next year to Hamlin.

The other upset would be Lou Polite over Hoyte. Hoyte's a good blocker and special team player but is not much of a receiving threat, and Garrett would probably much rather have someone like Lou. Also Lou had a strong outing last saturday. He is making a case.

Posted by Richard @ 11:15 PM Tue, Aug 21, 2007

only 6 DL and 8 LB's seem too little for the season. If Courtney Brown shows something as a STer, it would be a cheaper choice over Elam

Posted by James Joyner @ 7:19 AM Wed, Aug 22, 2007

Why not just cut all the fullbacks and go with a two tight end set instead? It's not like we've got the second coming of Moose Johnson on this roster.

Posted by gary m @ 9:26 AM Wed, Aug 22, 2007

what's the intrigue with oliver hoyte? does anyone remember the philly and saints game at home last season? he missed some key blocks that i recall. is it because hoyte can if need be play linebacker? why not polite and anderson?

Posted by Anthony @ 12:38 PM Wed, Aug 22, 2007

IMO cut Joe Berger add Matt Moore.
Trade Hoyte out with Polite.
Lets go with Stephen Bowen instead of Ab Elam.
I agree with Nick Folk because Wade was crunk when the rook made that 52-yarder.
Finally my surprise cut: Miles Austin for J. Urban.

Posted by L.J., Fla. @ 1:42 PM Wed, Aug 22, 2007

I really believe that Urban is a keeper.

Posted by duffy @ 5:25 PM Wed, Aug 22, 2007

OL: Trey Darilek over Berger.....Marten has been weak all camp and gets pushed around in games.
