Cowboys considering taking Tank

10:15 PM Tue, Sep 11, 2007 |
Tim MacMahon   E-mail   News tips

AP

The Cowboys brass apparently didn't read Todd Archer's chat yesterday. Todd and Calvin "Lucky" Watkins report that Tank Johnson's name has come up as the Cowboys discuss nose tackle options now that Jason Ferguson is gone for the season.

I've thought long and hard about this, and I'm all for Tank coming to town. That's primarily because it would provides tons of fodder that could be easily sensationalized for this here blog.

Can Tank help the Cowboys? Well, his agent says Tank's "determined to be in the best shape of his life." Did you expect the agent to say his client is washing down honeybuns with booze until the wee hours of the morning?

Best-case scenario is that Tank works his way into shape while serving his suspension after signing. He might give the Cowboys a fresh, active, big body who could play any position on the D-line in the last month of the regular season and the playoffs. Reckon I can see how Jerry would think that's worth the risk, as long as Tank doesn't move into his neighborhood.

Eeeeeeekkkk! At least its not Quincy...

Posted by bambam @ 10:51 PM Tue, Sep 11, 2007

Is Tank allowed to practice with the team while under suspension?

Posted by mcindallas @ 10:56 PM Tue, Sep 11, 2007

how effective can he be at nt? has he played it before?

Posted by J20oates @ 10:56 PM Tue, Sep 11, 2007

i think tank would be a great addition to the team. defense does win championships and he will provide a much needed anchor in the middle of the line. Something tells me that Jay Ratliff just can't play like he did Sunday for 15 more games.

Posted by Tank @ 11:00 PM Tue, Sep 11, 2007

PLEASE SIGN ME!!!!!!!!!!

I will help you win and will be fresh for the stretch run of the season.

I am not a bad guy, just an idiot.

In all seriousness, this is what championship teams like the Patriots and Colts do that push them over the top.

This is what the Cowboys used to do in the Jimmy J days

And this is what losers like the Eagles don't do that always leaves them short of a championship.

Hell, if the guy messes up or does not work out then cut him. I'm sure he is not going to cost much, maybe give him a 2-year deal with a $1 million signing bonus and all the rest of the $$ in incentives linked to staying out of trouble, winning and playing well

Posted by jrs2300 @ 11:06 PM Tue, Sep 11, 2007

if it's for the complete league minimum.. then Fine.. let him serve his time and he's ready for the playoffs and next season. Fine.

As for Rodney in Nashville. You don't stand pat you advance your talent. Tory James isn't 5'9" and he can play Man to Man. but New England wanted to go young and Cheap since paying so much to Samuel. and Rodney Sammy Davis played more time in this system than any current cowboy so check your knowledge. Turns out he was just on Tampa's roster already and was RE-signed not Signed.

Posted by Richard @ 11:14 PM Tue, Sep 11, 2007

He has too much off the field baggage to deal with and besides that he was not that great of a player to begin with. Not to mention he has never been a nose guard. Bad Idea all the way around.

Posted by Kingcapper @ 11:21 PM Tue, Sep 11, 2007

I don't think there is much interest in my picks in this blog, even though I've nailed 4 out of 5, and 3 in a row, so I am retiring from giving picks. It's all good though. I enjoy reading the rants in here just the same.
I will leave you with this 5 star college pick to remember me with.

TCU/Air Force over 41.5. Get a 2nd morgage on your house, and bet the whole load on this. It will absolutely go over. (I think it will go over 55) GO COWBOYS!

Posted by Dave in Dubai @ 11:38 PM Tue, Sep 11, 2007

We've gotta sign Tank in order to at least spell Jay during those last eight weeks of the season. By that time Jay will be worn and will need all the help he can get from Tank.

We can afford to have Tank sit for 8 weeks. We have to afford that. No choice.

Sign the man.

Posted by Mike @ 11:41 PM Tue, Sep 11, 2007

jrs3000 Tory James is 34! THIRTY-FOUR!

Posted by Tank Johnson @ 11:41 PM Tue, Sep 11, 2007

Hell yes I will show up in the best shape of my life!!!...just to let you Cowboys fans know I've eating my obligatory 9 candy bars per day...been huffing any stray spray paint cans I've been able to find on the side of the road!!!...and love those new xtra cheese specials from Arby's...sign me up boys...where is the White House again?...

Posted by Degenerate @ 12:10 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

Kingcapper! No! Don't leave us!

Posted by dave j @ 12:23 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

At least look at him and see what kind of shape he is in. The man is like 25 years old, has lost his contract, and needs football a lot more than football needs him. If he's in good shape, sign him to a contract that protects you if he screws up.

Posted by Pokes @ 12:27 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

Dear Cowboy Brass,

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sincerely

Real Cowboy Fans

Posted by DougO @ 1:08 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

Why not? The upside is huge. I don't know if Tank can keep his act straight or not, but I do know he can play some tackle football, and the Cowboys can get him at a discount price, and ditch him if he doesn't cut it.

Posted by BigTexKahuna @ 1:26 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

Hey... no problemo! Sign the guy. What the hell? Had he been a Cowboy when The Man found all 'dem guns, he would've been complimented on such a fine arsenal. Tank just got 'harassed' in the wrong state... that's all. Texans would've/will demand that Tank get on the cover of both SI and Guns & Ammo...

Posted by Tom H @ 3:59 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

You guys forget K Davis is carrying around a
bullet from a night-club shoot-out ? Canty nearly
lost an eye in a barroom fight ? Sheesh, give me
the bad guy WITH the guns, the butt-kicker !
Some of you guys act like Cowboys are recruiting
for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, hahaha.
Deperate times now, desperate times ahead, Cowboys
need the biggest, baddest dudes out there, waive
the charcter issues, please.
JJ has a history of sorts reclaiming bad guys...
...not all that difficult to imagine Tank working
off those 600 Twinkies & coming back ferocious,
motivated, inspired to tear Grossboy's head off
in the playoffs.
Sign him,

Posted by Saint Jimmy @ 5:23 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

I was dead-set against the possibility of bringing in Tank Johnson. But 2 items came to my attention that I didn't consider before. 1) Jason Ferguson would be finished for the season 2) If Tank plays nice Goodell would commute his suspension to 6 weeks. That means he could be available to play by week 8. That gives him half the season to get into football shape, learn the system, and be ready to be the player he can be for the playoffs.

Posted by Bill in DC @ 7:13 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

mcindallas,

No. He can have no contact with the team. He cannot use the facilities, he cannot talk to anyone from Dallas on the phone.

Posted by ernest t bass @ 7:28 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

Does Kingcrapper pay the DMN, or MacMahon directly, for advertising on this blog?

Posted by Rodney in Nashville @ 7:35 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

jrs2300, you can attack me all day long, but it still doesn't mean that you're right. Just like Mike said, Tory James is 34. Why don't we just bring Aaron Glenn back in here. Of course you were probably one of the fans who thought he should of stayed despite him looking like he was running around in concrete shoes. Every team is susceptible to the same circumstances that have befallen on the Cowboys. Picking up some other teams retreads is not any better than filling the spot with one of your own backups. Tampa's defense is not any better then the Cowboys, especially if they lose a couple of cogs like the Cowboys have.

Mike had also explained earlier that we could not play alot of man schemes because we didn't have Newman to be able to man up on the other team's receivers. Would any of the guys that you suggested be able to man up? I don't think so, so we're right back where we started from before we picked up one of these retreads.

In response to saying earlier that the Cowboys need to take a draft approach to free agency... See, there's this thing called a salary cap. If the Cowboys do what you want them to do, they would have no money left when someone decent did come along.

Kingcapper, who cares? Are you looking for some kind of self-esteem boost? You are not the only one here who knows how to pick games, and I doubt you do as well as you say that you do. Good gamblers don't behave like you do.

Posted by Vox Veritas @ 8:31 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

Won't happen. Tank Johnson's NFL career is over.

Posted by Chris/Denton @ 8:32 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

Sometimes a change of scenery can be just what the Doctor ordered. Get Tank away from some of those friends of his that are bad influences, a stern "talking to" by Jerry and Stephen and a contract filled with clauses about off the field incidents and he might be okay. Wade's 3-4 doesn't call for a traditional NT per say since he stunts that position a lot so if Tank came in and worked out hard to get back in shape while serving his suspension he might just come in handy the 2nd half of the season. Try a one year deal and see how things go.

Posted by Andy @ 8:54 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

DON'T SIGN HIM! By the time he's able to play, the cowboys will already have learned to deal with the NT we have. Plus this guy has never played NT.

Posted by Elliott @ 9:30 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

nooooooooooooo. we don't need that kind of poison.

Posted by Eric B. @ 9:49 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

Everyone keeps saying it is a mandatory 8 game suspension. It mayonly be 6 based on good behavior. I say sign him.

Posted by Robert @ 10:16 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

Another Jerrah Jones PR Signing. Square peg in a round hole. Not a NT. Never played 3-4.

But it is a Jerrah Jones flashy name. This will rank up there with Galloway trade, Roy Williams/Bradie James resigning, drafting OLBs in a row, etc.........

Posted by Scott in NM @ 10:23 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

Exactly dave j. Give him a 1 year minimum with a stipulation that if he is even ticketed for jay-walking, then he has to pay back any money received.

Posted by Rob @ 10:23 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

He's worth a look. Remember, the Boys have Calvin Hill on staff to keep knuckleheads like Tank Johnson in line. Tank can't command anything at this point and will basically have to accept what offer (if any) is given to him. Who knows, he can be "one and done" or turn out to be of help to the boys down the stretch. Bottom line is that it doesn't hurt to look!

Posted by Bill in DC @ 10:26 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

Turns out that the suspension is counted for each NFL game played regardless if he is on a team or not, so he would be available to play after week 8 regardless of when Dallas signs him.

Also, that means that Antonio Bryant is available to join a team after Sunday's game.:) We'd just have to search him for sweatshits before every practice.

Posted by 5xSuper @ 10:46 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

Sign Him. At a price that doesn't effect salary cap and make line items in his contract for conduct. If he doesn't abide by those rules cut him. He's young, big, and may have learned a lesson from all of this.
I'm curious to know... will he be able to practice or work out while on suspension? If he can, we will need help at week 10, because other injuries will come up; and another body added to the rotation will help tremendously.

Posted by jrs2300 @ 10:59 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

Mike.. We are talking about someone to fill in until Newman comes back.. Not The next coming.. Check his stats.. his last 4 years has been better than Newman and Henry.. he gets Int's and he can play man to man against Bigger WR's.. he has experience and can teach these young CB a thing or two.. especially Courtney Brown and Ball who are 6'1" with speed. with A.Glenn he would've gotten MOSSED all sunday night

Posted by Larry @ 11:00 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

COWBOY FANS. ARE WE SUDDENLY THIS DESPERATE?

I'M SORRY, WE LUCKED OUT WITH T.O. NOT BEING A MAJOR DISTRACTION AND NOW IT LOOKS LIKE HE IS SETTLING IN NICELY, BUT:

TANK IS A DIFFERENT STORY. A PERPETUAL LAWBRAKER IN THE MOLD OF THAT LITTLE DB FROM TENNESSEE(CANT THINK OF HIS NAME) WHO WILL JUST GET IN TROUBLE AGAIN.

EXERCISE A LITTLE RESTRAINT. WITH REMI SIGNED, GOOD LORD GUYS, WE ARE NOT THAT DESPERATE.

Posted by Ray @ 11:02 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

Yeah, let's definitely sign Tank "Alonzo Spellman" Johnson. Just make sure he takes his librium with those Twinkies.

Posted by Dirk @ 11:09 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

I agree with degenerate. I'm riding you to the bank Kingcapper. At least give us your big game of the week!

I also agree about signing Tank. Dont give him alot of gauenteed money, and we have nothing to lose, and everything to gain.

Posted by Brandon @ 11:18 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

What does Dallas have to lose? If Tank screws up while in Dallas, no one expects anything else. If he doesn't screw up in Dallas, the Cowboys get a very good player for nothing.

Everyone expected T.O. to destroy the Cowboys, but all he has done is play well...

Kingcapper, haven't seen you in Yahoo fantasy baseball lately. Did McDonald's block your access to Yahoo?

Posted by Bill in Dc @ 11:24 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

I have the perfect solution.

We can sign Tank, Antonio Bryant and David Boston and have an all-criminal team.

Posted by Casey @ 11:32 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

I read where Tank spent $700 on junk food at the comissary when he was locked up. Best shape my ...

Posted by shahab @ 11:55 AM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

sign him up. like Tom H said, now's not the time to be worrying about character issues. we need guys who can play on the defensive line and you can never have enough good D-linemen. games are won and lost at the line of scrimmage. you warn him upfront, he will not get any second chances to screw up here. first sign of trouble and you cut the mo'fo'.

Posted by Donovan @ 12:22 PM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

If you aren't too keen on the idea of signing Tank, think about it this way:

1. What if Jay Ratliff gets hurt? We have one backup still for this position, and he was someone pegged for the practice squad this year.

2. Who else is available to sign that would be a better option?

It's risky, but the Cowboys absolutely have to shore up this spot. This was a big red flag position, depth wise, during the offseason, and the worst case scenario happened in week 1. It's time to take risks. Best case scenario is that Ratliff and Adoyele play well and stay healthy all year and Tank is never activated. But best case scenarios usually only happen for one team a year, haha.

Rodneyin Nashville, when you're old enough to legally gamble, I'll explain it to you. Your jealously is flattering however. As a gambler, I am giving even odds that you're an idiot. Any takers?

Posted by Darrin in OK city @ 1:12 PM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

Rodney in Nashville and Ernest t bass. Maybe you boys don't bet like the other 90 percent in here do, so SHUT-DA- HECK up. I for one have profited from Kingcappers harmless posts. (I figure Tim has too, or he wouldn't post them) Feel free to bypass his posts if you choose, but I would like to see him posting.

Posted by Brandon @ 1:35 PM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

Kingcrapper, I noticed you have stopped bragging about your record on here. Of course you weren't bragging to begin with, but instead you were just keeping track. Did you lose track? How about that over 43 on the Rams/Panthers game? How did that work out for you?

Posted by Kingcapper @ 1:55 PM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

Brandon, who is Mcdonald?, and which Yahoo league are you speaking of? At this phase of fantasy baseball, I only concentrate on my money leagues. The free league's are merely practice for the big payola, so yes, I have become a lame duck owner in those leagues. Besides, I can over-ride anything Yahoo throws at me.

Posted by Hanker @ 2:00 PM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

YES sign Tank. I don't know how contracts and such work, but sign him with an incentive ladden contract and the NFL minimum. Who care's what happened to yeasterday. The Cowboy's have got to look out for tomorrow.
ernest and Rodney in nashville obviously don't share the same hobby as most of us in here. Screw the non-gamers Kingcapper. Let us have it.

All have some opinion on gambling (half of the bets are losers) but many use as a form or entertainment or employment. If Kingcapper is affiliated with the Kingcapper betting site then I would like to post ticklers (subtle or not) on this here blog as well that direct web traffic to my internet venture. Moderator, I believe that we were asked not to use this blog for such personal gain. Has your policy changed? If Kingcapper is not affiliated with the betting site, then by all means continue the adolescent name calling. This is one form of my entertainment.

Posted by Charles in Charge @ 3:02 PM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

Wait, isn't ernest t bass the one who at one time was worried that someone else was stealing his identity? uh,,isn't that a little bit ridiculous in the cyber world, where no one really see's anyone else? Man, that's a whole lotta ego!

Posted by Kingcapper @ 3:11 PM Wed, Sep 12, 2007

Good Lord, what have I created and become? I have no web-site. This is just a name I call myself in my fantasy leagues. I am one of the best "guess-ers" in picking games. Its all a crap shoot. I just crapshoot better than most. If you don't like it, THEN DON'T READ IT! I ask for nothing, and I am entitled to my posts, and you are entitled to ignor them. ( you are making me bigger than I care to be) Chill out fella's, and get over me!

Kingcrapper, your definition of what constitutes advertising is ignorant.

I'll be more specific ... you're dishing spam.

Kingcapper, I'm an adult at 42. What's your excuse? And get over yourself...

When you choose a moniker that easily represents a commercial entity prevalent across the internet and then purport a "product" consistent with said comercial activity, don't get upset when someone calls you on it even if by mistake. Try a little humility instead of telling us to look the other way. I am "entitled to my posts" as well. If you post it be prepared to defend it or at least discuss it without resorting to name calling. Maybe YOU need to grow up as you so eloquently instructed others.

Ok ernest, I am spamming. So, what are you going to do about it? Meet me after school? Ernest, aren't more worried about imposters in the cyber world that are pretending to be you? That was a great post Charles. Only Ernest would worry about others, pretending to be him, in a world where no one EVER see's anyone else anyway,,,lmao. What's wrong Ernest. Am I stealing some of your limelight? Not getting enough attention?
Rodney,,you are 42 years old. ok. Why are you telling me this. I couldn't care less if I tried really, really hard.

There are a lot better means to invigorate a healthy discussion than to use an old cliche. Give us you real opinion on the topic. Stop hiding. I am not going to hurt you.

p.s. maybe you are so used to taking all those "blue" pills yourself that you think others will benefit as well - none needed here; you just better not get them mixed up

No Tank Johnson, this here blog is about me, me, me, me... Sorry, I thought I was T.O. for a moment.

Hanker which "big" words offended you the most? I made 4 posts (prior to this one) and using the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level Scale (ask Tim about this - its way over your head) found my posts respectively to be of 9th, 11th, 7th and 5th grade level. So are you implying that you have difficulty with an average 9th grade reading level? If so, there are a number of adult level English language courses available in your community. Looking at the 2nd post (11th grade level) the 2 largest words are prevalent and eloquent. I think you can handle these, can't you? You make snide remarks about my shortcomings that you have no evidence of except my words yet you provide ample evidence of your shortcomings. We all have shortcomings but let's get back to the topic at hand and cease (that means end) these personal attacks. Thanks.

p.s.
prevalent - frequent or common
eloquent - expressing yourself clearly,
effectively
snide - expressive of contempt

Jim, my wife started reading Leo Tolstoy's "War and Peace" at the same time I started reading your post. She finished first. I've seen more "blah" "blah" "blah" in my life. You try to hard Jimbo!

If you can pass a high school equivalency test then you should have no problems understanding. If you have to ask then maybe you did not pass.

p.s. My condolences (Yanker that means an expression of sympathy or is that too big a word also) for your reading disability. (You guys make this tooooo easy - thanks for the entertainment)

I am breaking up my posts for you Yanker - don't want to make them too long for you. First you call out my shortcomings or inadequacies and then you say that I am trying to hard or too adequate for you to handle - make up you mind.

Re: Who cares?

Yanker I believe that it is you who cares. Why else would you be so enamored with my posts. If you are so irritated by them, then you can stop responding to them. There, is that simple enough? Even you can comprehend (oops) figure it out.
